@mrswin: I think this is a situation where the "right" answer is very child dependent. I think it's something we would have to work up to, simply because of my son's personality and the experiences we have had thus far.

@looch: I think it is important for them to get the full sum of money to learn the consequences of spending it all at once. My sister was the youngest and alway liked to spend money, my parents never treated her any different. They would let her make her own choice and use the opportunity as a learning experience. She eventually figured out that she wasn't going to get extra so she became more thoughtful with her choices. She was about 4 or 5 the first time we went and my parents did this.

@Mamaof2: Yeah I think that would be fine. What kind of stuff do they usually want to buy? Are you going somewhere where $50 is going to be enough to get something? I might consider giving more if we were going somewhere really touristy where prices are inflated

I remember getting $100 each when we went to Disney. My siblings spent it the first couple days and I waited untill the end. It was used for souvenirs or if we bought little gifts for our friends. Activities were paid for by our parents.

@Mamaof2: it depends on whether or not we were going to be back in the location where it could be purchased on the third day. If we weren't, I would buy it, then he would have to give me $5 a day until he "bought" it from me.

My son doesn't really delay gratification, so we're working on it.

@looch: what if he wanted something that was $12 - you would say no or tell him to save up 3 days worth of money and buy it on the third day?

I think $50 would be awesome for a weeklong trip if you are paying for activities. Since your kids are younger I would assume they aren't old enough to do stuff alone. I gave my almost 3 year old five dollars in singles on our last vacation to use for treats and it worked out pretty well. She can count to five on her fingers so I would explain that she had five dollars and she would need to give two away if she wanted her treat and have just three left. She would decide if she wanted to give her dollars away (and a couple times she said "no thank you mommy I will keep my money's"!!!). I don't think she got it completely but it was a good start to understanding that money isn't infinite.

I wouldn't be able to give my son an amount for the week, he would want to spend it all on the first day, so for the very first time, I would institute an amount per day just to see how he copes with the decision making process. I would allow him to save his money on a daily basis and then buy something big at the end.

I would begin with $5 per day.

@Mamaof2: My parents did this for us growing up. We used to get $100 to spend during our 2 week vacation to Florida. We were not required to pay for our own activities if it was something we were doing as a group (i.e. Mini putt with the family) but if we wanted to do something on our own we had to pay for it. I think one year I wanted to go to a fair with a family friend and so my parent made me pay for the admission ($5).

I think the $5 year old might surprise you with the level of understanding, at least of the abstract concept of a budget

Every year on vacation the kids want to buy more and more stuff so I thought I would implement an amount that they get to use as they please and when its gone its gone.

Kids are 5 and soon to be 8.

I don't think the 5 yr old will understand - its more for the 8yr old but I want to do the same for both.

Whats a good amount of money you would give them for souvenirs for 1 week.

If you want to expand on that would you include activities too and give more money - for instance they have rock mining that the kids did last year it was $12.50 per kid -
