My focus on reducing what I bring on vacation is to make sure I don't have to bring a ton of different shoes/accessories because I feel they take up a ton of space. Dresses/tops are lightweight so I always make sure to have enough for the trip plus one extra. Also, I tend to wear the same outfit for both days of travels, since it has time to air out. I tend to use a different accessory - wrap/hat etc or maybe a different top to keep it from being too identical. My go-to plane outfit is a pair of white jeans, a loose comfortable top, and slip on shoes that are walkable for a long distance. I usually bring a wrap or cardigan. I have a pretty printed one for summer I love. Minimal jewelry and always pack it in my carry on then just put it on when I get on the plane.

Also, if I'm going anywhere sunny I bring almost no makeup. Never end up needing it and it takes up needed space.

@PawPrints: the rompers are from Saks off 5th (they were less than $20) and the ones I love were from Gap Outlet, I'm wearing them today, ha!

The pants look like linen- wide leg and lightweight. But they are cotton. I got them from BR in chambray, black and white.

Or, the linen pants?

@lamariniere: I have to go home and look at the prints and see if there is a common color that could work. I feel like white is the obvious choice, but I am not actually sure the skirt has white in the print, lol.

@T.H.O.U.: you know what it is, I am trying to avoid two things...one is that I throw a bunch of stuff into my suitcase at the last minute and two is that I arrive at my destination with a suitcase full of stuff and nothing to wear!

@looch: I mean 5 days isn't a ton to just pack 5 outfits and swim suits with covers. But if you are trying to stream line and give yourself options, then its best to do multiple piece outfits (aka not all dresses) and have the ability to mix and match.

Do you have another top that would work with both the pants and skirt? I don't mind rewearing bottoms, but I won't rewear tops until they have been washed. I think if you can find one more top and one more day dress, you should be set!

@T.H.O.U.: I think you're right, it's too many prints without a common color in them at all. Let's call white my nuetral for now, I also have some navy, so maybe this weekend I need to pull some stuff out and do a few combinations of things. We'll be at the pool or beach most days, and then out to the restaurants at the resort for dinner. And I might hit the gym once or twice, so I need space for some workout clothes too.

I would love to have a palette that is based on navy, white, orange and turquoise, but I never seem to buy clothes in those colors.

Oh, and one more thing, no, I wouldn't wear the white shirt over the dress, that's why those alternate ways of wearing things doesn't stretch my wardrobe. I am also not a fan of say, slipdresses over turtlenecks, at least not on me.

@looch: Yea that is the problem with prints on a capsule wardrobe. They recommend you start with a neutral color but maybe your neutral sounds like it might be white.

It sounds like most of your days will be pool days plus nights out?

The color block dress, could you wear it once alone and once with the white linen button down over it (maybe tied in the front or something).

The next step after picking your neutral is to also pick a color palate. It sounds like you may be trying to mix too many colors. Maybe pick like pink and purple and then mix a few solids to mix with your prints in those colors?

Honestly I wear mostly one pieces- I have several maxi dresses, rompers, and pool cover ups. I snag 1-2 new items a year then rotate out the old items or the ones I like the least. I do have casual pants- think linen and will bring a couple sleeveless tops and a chambray shirt for evenings. And a fedora.

ETA this is also my summer wardrobe for weekends.

@looch: This is how I only have to bring one shirt per day :) I like colorful but platternless tops and colorful bottoms. That way mixes is usually easier.

@Pumuckl: oh that's a good idea, to use it at night first, and then the following day, I hadn't thought about that!

@lamariniere: I prefer dresses as well, this way, it's one piece as opposed to two, but I only have one that would be a contender to bring on this trip and I am trying not to buy anything new and use what I have.

So far, I have a couple of ideas, I think I am bringing:

3 bathing suits
3 cover ups for throwing over my suit ( i was hoping to use one as a dress, but it's too short for going to dinner, but fine for the pool)
1 pair patio pants in a crazy purple print worn with
1 white linen button down over a white tank
1 printed circle skirt (postacard print from Boden) worn with 1 pink washed oxford shirt
1 dress, colorblocked purple, teal and orange

See my problem? Nothing can mix and match.

@looch: I did, but I also personally prefer dresses. We were also mainly at the beach or pool, so no trekking and doing sweat-inducing activities :silly: . If I knew we were doing something more adventurous in the heat, I probably would have gone for 2 extra top/bottom combos.

@looch: Could you use something that works days and nights as a top, so something like a polo shirt and use the fresh shirt in the evening with a skirt and then the same shirt the coming day?

@T.H.O.U.: 5 days, and the only restrictions I have on color are no black, no beige! I like color and prints the best on vacation, call me Mrs. Roper!

@lamariniere: did you feel you had enough tops? That's where I usually fall short, because i tend to perspire and want a fresh top (normally I would do a load of laundry but we're not staying in a condo and i haven't researched if there is a do your own option).

Last fall we went from 40° weather to 90° weather for one week and this is what I did.

I wore leggings with a short sleeve tee and a cardigan on the plane and had a skirt and sandals ready for when we got off (we had to take a taxi for 45 min to our hotel). I don't usually wear or pack jeans/pants if I know we are going somewhere warm because I hate wearing pants when it's hot.

I brought 4 casual dresses, 2 skirts, 1 pair of shorts and 3 tank tops, 2 pairs of Saltwater sandals and a pair of flip flops. I also had one beach cover up dress. The resort we were staying at had a "smart casual" dinner dress code (which I mostly took to mean no swimsuits/sports shorts at dinner).

How many days?

First I would pick a color palate. What is your neutral. For me, bottoms are the hardest, so I will pick for example either black shorts or khaki shorts (black or brown base). I always try to travel with a pair of jeans.

For the plane my go to outfit is leggings with a longer/cooler top and a long cardigan. My leggings are black so usually black is my neutral color for traveling.

So my bottoms would be:

Black Leggings
Black Shorts
Jeans
Black/White pattern skirt
Black or colored dress that goes with black shoes

From there I add tops! I assume I can wear most bottoms 2 days (not necessarily back to back but twice before they are really dirty). So those bottoms would cover me for about 8 days. Plus 8 shirts and 1-2 light cardigans to mix with.

I need some help putting together a vacation capsule wardrobe for warm locations. I have a ton of clothes, but I don't ever use any of it, because I tend to wear outfit formulas and I am not creative enough to deviate once I know it works. I have also realized that I use more clothes when we travel, because I tend to change during the day depending on activity. At home I wear mostly athleisure stuff on the weekends, but on vacation, that doesn't seem to work when we want to go out to a somewhat nicer dinner, for example.

I need some ideas for plane travel outfits for when you're going from cold to warm, out to dinner outfits when you need something a step up from athleisure but not fancy.

I am hopeless, I know! HAAAALP!
