Definitely Hawaii! Travel would be easiest and tons to do for the whole family. Jet-lag won't be an issue and you don't have to worry about safety and language barriers. Australia sounds amazing, but with family living there, it'll be really tough to get out of all the potential family get-togethers.

We went to Sri Lanka last year when the kids were 4 and 7, we only had one week but it was an amazing trip. We hired a local driver for the week and went on an elephant safari, rode the train, went to the beach, went on an unsuccessful whale watching trip, glamped, and checked out a number of cities and villages along the way. We only did a small loop, but there is so much more to see. I would definitely go back! I know there are safety concerns...but you could say that about just about anywhere, you just never know.

We were in Switzerland this summer. It was glorious, but (I’m sure everyone knows this), very, very expensive. For half of the trip it was just DH and I. I would cringe at prices to accommodate/feed the extended family. But there is so much to see and do and being in the mountains was just sublime.

I’m a travel with kids wimp, but going all the way to Australia with kids for only two weeks doesn’t seem worth it. I’d rather save that trip for when they are bigger and can adjust more easily, unless there was a real reason to do it sooner.

I would do Hawaii, but I admit I’ve never been there or lost of the other places on your list. 😊

I’d vote Hawaii too. We are definitely more “city” people (love old European cities, New York, etc) but we were blown away by Maui. You snorkel right from the beach and see a turtle the size of yourself literally 3 feet away  We were in love. That would be my ideal for a multi-generational trip because some can be super adventurous and hike, snorkel, etc or just sit at the beach. I’d do 2 islands if I were going for 2 weeks. We were on Maui for a week and were able to see most of it.

The only con I had? The driving. Like I said, we’re city people and love to be able to walk from restaurant to restaurant, hop on public transportation to see a different neighborhood, etc. On Maui (and at least what I’ve researched about Kauai and the Big Island), there isn’t really that option. We had to drive to get to restaurants, different beaches, etc. You’ll need a car to explore each island (which you’ll want to do anyways!). We can’t sit at a resort all day and go to the same restaurants which seems to be what many on Maui did. But with little kids and grandparents, having a gorgeous resort with a car to go explore if you want sounds like an ideal vacation to me!

From reading what you said, I vote Hawaii. I feel like it’ll give you the relaxing family time you’re looking for, and there are always options for more active day trips for those that are interested as well. Plus two weeks sounds like a perfect amount of time there.

@Bluebonnet: New Zealand sounds fun. I think if we went to Australia, DH would want to go to both sydney (he has some fam there and that’s where our close friends are moving) and Melbourne (where he lived for a year and the rest of his family lives), so if we go to both of those cities and do whatever touristy things there are, it seems like that might take up al 2 weeks?

It’s also winter there when we’d go, not sure hoe that affects which sites we might see—we’d probably skip any beachy activities. Maybe even 3 days in NZ could be added—that would be amazing.

@charm55: haha!! My husband had that exact same fear!!! He’s never been on a cruise before so last summer we were going to be in Florida anyway, so I convinced him to take a short cruise from Orlando as a travel run. It was just 4 nights and he was totally convinced he’d be seasick or the kids would be. Everyone was fine.

A cruise is something we might all get on board with. I guess I’d just have to find the right destination.

Hawaii sounds best out of the choices listed above.

Have you considered New Zealand? It has the wow factor and if you could easily combine a week in NZ with a week in Australia. If your ILs wanted to visit family in AUS, they could go a week early or stay a week later so that wouldn’t end up being the focus of your time with them.

@Anagram: fair points. We’ve looked into doing a Disney cruise through the Norwegian fjords with my in laws. It looks amazing and cruising is really convenient for people with different activity/mobility levels and interests. I bet an Alaskan Cruise would be similarly awesome. The only thing holding us back is my DH is convinced he will get violently sea sick (he’s never cruised before). Oh, and the crazy high price tag haha.

@charm55: I love Costa Rica, but I think of it as an active place—and my in-laws aren’t very active. I spent about 3 weeks in CR before I got married, and would love to take the kids there— the zip lining and volcano hiking and hot springs I enjoyed there all seem like things the in-laws wouldn’t enjoy.

And Iceland sounds interesting, but the in-laws just went there last year in a big group tour trip with their Seniors group.

I’ve been to Switzerland too, but it was years and years ago and I didn’t spend much time. So I’d definitely love to go back there and see the countryside/alps more.

On that list, I have been to Switzerland and it is absolutely stunning. We did a lot of hiking and the scenery was breathtaking.

Costa Rica and Iceland are two recent places I’ve been that I have loved loved loved. It was just my DH and myself on those trips ...but both are places I could see bringing kids (especially Costa Rica!). They were incredible destinations and I’m itching to go back one day.

I realize that we just got back from a vacay, but I’m already looking ahead to 2020.

Here’s our situation: DH and I are both turning 40 in 2020. On top of that, his mother is turning 70 and my mother is turning 75, so we’re all having milestones birthdays. I’m thinking of inviting the grandparents to come with us on a big trip in celebration of all those things.

So, I need ideas for a special, multigenerational-friendly trip, where we’ll have a kid as young as 4 and a grandparent as old as 75.

Here are places I’m thinking:
Hawaii—-
Pros:DH and I have never been and there seems to be a ton to do/see. Seems friendly for all ages.
Cons: it’s still in the US which feels a bit less special, and my mother has been, although it’s been 15 years.

Australia:
Pros: I haven’t been, so after I cross that off my list my last continent is Antarctica. More pros are some close friends are moving there soon, so we could see them. My mother had never been. Obviously there is a lot to do there. DH lived there for 1 year and would like to revisit his old stomping grounds.

Cons: MILs whole extended family live there. So in-laws have been, but not recently. I’m worried extended family will take up a lot of our time and I really want to do touristy stuff as well, not just meet extended family we’ve never met before.

Sri Lanka:: I would LOVE to go and am pulling hard. I think my mother would love to go and the kids would love to go as well. In-laws haven’t been in a while. It would be a very nostalgic trip for DH and in-laws.
Cons: DH is paranoid and worries it’s not safe. Even though he has lots of friends who live there currently.

Wildcard: somewhere in Europe. Maybe Switzerland or Greece? DHs best friend growing up lives in Zurich now and obviously Switzerland is beautiful in summer. Greece is super different but has the islands and historical sites. Haven’t really thought through the euro destinations much.

Any other suggestions?
Oh and ETA: this is not a long trip—just maybe 2 weeks total. So we can’t have a super ambitious itinerary.
