@MamaJ: depends on the airline and probably the mood if the agent you are dealing with. We travel frequently but usually don't take our Bjorn crib unless we know there is not going to something for DS to sleep in. This spring we were flying back from Asia and they wanted to charge us $150 to check the Bjorn crib, even though we were allowed to check it for free on the way there. The agent would not budge and finally let us carry it on (it fit in the overhead). I would have been pretty upset to have to pay so much to check it.

@Foodnerd81: check with the rental company before lugging your PNP. Many of them are used to having small children stay and can provide one for you. I usually bring at least a sleep sack and DS's blankie. I have never had a problem with sheet cleanliness.

I would use a local rental company. You can get a full size portable crib and bring your own sheets. It will be more comfortable and similar to home, which will hopefully give you better sleep. We did that at a vacation rental and LO slept so much better than in a pack and play or baby bjorn travel crib. Worth every penny.

We did this, and we knew in advance that the rental house did not have a PNP. If you fly Southwest, you can check your PNP as a second bag for free. Otherwise, you can do what we did, which was to purchase a new PNP for about $50 at Target. We ended up using that and leaving it in the rental house when we flew home. It was cheaper than checking one or using one of those baby rental companies to rent one. In some other parts of the country maybe the baby rental companies are cheaper, so you could go that route as well!

@Foodnerd81: hmm yeah I was just looking on the airlines website and saw nothing about play yards. In the past we just put DS in our bed but I was thinking of doing the p&p route for our trip next month since his crawls now... Dang! I don't want to pay to check it either!

@Foodnerd81: can you call the rental management company and ask? Would she sleep in a RnP? Might be easier to travel with or buy and mail home when you get there.

@shopaholic: the thing I'm worried about is that well be staying in a vacation rental house so I think they won't have as much as a hotel would. If its through a big property management company we probably have a better chance. But yeah, I assume there will be a Walmart or target where I can get one for only slightly more than checking it would cost.

We took our Baby Bjorn to Europe and on a cruise. Didn't end up using it either time. The hotel had a nice, new PNP, that the baby never wanted to sleep in. On the cruise we just stuck with co-sleeping. Just went on another trip and didn't bring it. Hotel had a crib. Though I thought it was a little scary looking (metal bars), I brought our own sheets and she slept in there fine. If it were really awful, I would have just gone to the local Walmart and bought a cheap one to use and toss.

This is a ways out, but we will be traveling by plane for Christmas and staying in a vacation rental with my inlaws. Has anyone had experience with that and know if they are ever able to provide a crib or pack and play? We have a pnp that we have never used, but checking it on the plane will cost as much as a new one I think.

I'm sure this isn't a unique problem- what did you do?
