We loooove Charleston!! We've actually been visiting for years: We used to live in NC and my inlaws are in SC. I actually got engaged down there and married on Folly Beach.

I'm so excited b/c we're headed down the first half of Thanksgiving week for a little family vacation before heading to my inlaws upstate for Thanksgiving---so we are so so excited to take our son down to our favorite place ever! (he'll be 15 months old at the time)

You will want a car--while you can walk around the downtown area fine--you'll want it to go out to the beaches or any of the plantations or the outlet mall. Also, the rental for a few days is probably not too much more than the taxi cab ride to and from the airport.

We don't normally stay downtown--we have been really spoiled and stayed most of our visits with friends in Mt Pleasant or at one of the beaches. This time we are renting a little apartment from vrbo--we're still deciding if we'd rather do Mt Pleasant (close to the playground near the base of the bridge) or out at Folly or Sullivan's. But your considerations might be different, we've been so many times that we opt to skip staying downtown but it is so historic and beautiful that I could see wanting to stay there for a first trip.

I have obviously never been there with a child, but we are really looking forward to playing on the beach (and we're going in November--it's going to be even better in May!) and we're looking forward to checking out the aquarium and the lowcountry children's museum.

I have loads of restaurant recommendations if you want those too--just let me know!

I love Charleston!!! DH and I got married there and it's definitely one of our favorite places to visit.

You can walk around a lot of the historic downtown area, but I strongly recommend getting a car. A lot of the fun activities aren't right in the downtown area so being mobile is essential. We love Folly Beach- make sure you go to Taco Boy for lunch when you are there. Also love- canoeing along the river, baseball games, historic walking tours of the Battery and Park Ranger tours of Fort Sumter, sandwiches from the Butcher and Bee, and grown up dinner at Husk. There are a ton of options for golf and spa stuff but we aren't so into that so I have no recommendations.

I highly recommend splurging on a historic bed and breakfast if you can swing it- the little touches they do in most of the places are so cute and make your vacation just over the top- sherry or wine receptions in the afternoon, breakfast delivered to your room on a tray, handmade lace curtains, etc. Last time we stayed in the Old Village Post House Inn in Mount Pleasant, which is just over the river (and a bit less expensive).

Does anyone have recommendations for a family-friendly trip to Charleston, SC? My dad and stepmom are leaving on a cruise from there in May, so we thought we'd all fly down early to spend some time exploring (especially since I'll still be on maternity leave.) We'll have an almost 2-year-old and a 2.5 month old.

So - any recommendations on where to stay, what to do, what to avoid? If we stay downtown, will we need a rental car, or is it a walkable city? Am I crazy for trying to squeeze in a family vacation before I go back to work? :silly:
