Flew with both my kids when they were 3.5 months old (one of those was a 9 hour flight with a 2 hour layover!), and to me... it's such an ideal age to travel with. I say do it, esp when you'll have family around who can help with the baby so you can get a night out!

Do it! We traveled at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 15 months. The first two were the easiest and best because he wasn't mobile and took awesomely long naps anywhere. Just be sure to offer bottle/boob more often being at the beach (dehydration) and have fun

We took out 1 month old to the coast for 4 nights, it was not a trip where we hung out on the beach besides a few walks. As long as it is a house with a kitchen (a washer and dryer would be a plus) I think you should do it.

I you do decide to go make sure you look into any ordinances the city you will be in may have against beach tents or other sun shelters. I haven't been to the Outer Banks in a while, but when I went to Myrtle Beach last summer they only allowed regular beach umbrellas under a certain diameter.

We just took our four month old to the beach and she adored it. The SPF rash guard worked wonders! I say go for it. Can't wait for more beach trips.

Absolutely! Babies are so much easier to travel with at that age than they will be at any time in the next three years! :-) And for what you have planned, a nice low key beach vacation, you will totally be fine.

You can use a long sleeve rash guard with your baby, as well as a hat, and take your LO to the beach for sure - maybe avoid heat of the day hours if the sun is super strong, but I think it will be a great holiday!

Oh, and I second the PPs who said fly. Most definitely! A two hour flight (or less) vs a 10(?) hr road trip will be a thousand times easier!

I think it's a great idea! In your situation, I would definitely fly.

The main thing when traveling with babies is that you really have to lower your expectations. We've traveled quite a lot with out LOs, especially when my older LO was under 1. We plan maybe one activity per day (a museum, a market, visiting a tourist site, etc.) and the rest is low key, relaxing and following the baby's needs/schedule.

That sounds good especially with all your family there to help hold the baby. We flew to Bali when LO was 3.5mth and the conditions there were more difficult than somewhere near NY! And we had a great time, baby slept more than anyone on the plane!

I would do it, though I haven't had my baby yet. We're planning on going on a family trip (to Vegas, which I'm not thrilled about, but FIL is paying so he got to pick the location!) when she's 3 months or so. I'm glad so many people are saying you should go for it, since I'm a bit nervous! Not as relaxing as the beach, but honestly, I like just hanging out at the hotel and reading, so hopefully it'll still be nice.

I would definitely do it and fly there. We took my LO on vacation at 4.5 months and it was so much easier than the same trip we just did with her at 16 months. It wasn't beach, but we went to the river or a pool to swim almost everyday. We did a rash guard and hat and it was enough protection for the time we were out in the sun.

We got a PeaPod to use for naps/shade when we went to the river to swim. We bought ours used through our local parents group, but here is a link to it on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/KidCo-P3010-Peapod-Cranberry/dp/B00CCKC108/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430015512&sr=8-1&keywords=peapod

@catomd00: Awesome! I love the beach, so I'm thrilled that it's not off limits.

@mamimami: Haha, yes, there will probably be fewer frozen cocktails than our usual vacations! (Though maybe Grandma will be willing to watch the baby on margarita night? Lol.)

@jhd: @Anagram: Yay, I'm glad to hear you guys say go for it! My parents will be happy to watch their little grand baby so DH and I can get a date night in there... And even if we wind up being a little sleep deprived, at least we are sleep deprived on the beach, right? :)

@KatieBklyn: you can totally do it! Especially if your parents are going to be there and can help/give breaks. I first flew--solo--with my LO when she was 3 months. We flew Newark-ATL for two weeks to see my family.

It was a bit if a vacation for me, as I had my mom and two sisters and 8th grade niece super eager to do baby stuff, so I got to take lots of naps and relax at my moms pool.

You can buy a baby pop up beach tent on amazon and keep the baby shaded all day, and also use a rash guard and shorts and you will be all set. I think the Ocean will be too cold but a heated pool would be fine for a short dip.

Do it! We took our LO at five months on a family trip to the beach. We drove around seven or eight hours. It was a nice break from home and my parents watched LO so DH and I could walk on the beach etc. We went in Oct so I don't have advice on keeping cool etc but we found some cute sun hats and glasses for when we took him out.

Stop thinking of it as a "vacation" and you'll probably be fine! We took my son to the beach at that age and it was fine. Not really relaxing or anything, but fine. And for whatever it's worth, we did put sunscreen on him. Better that than risk a burn, in my book!

We went to the beach for a week with our 5 month old and it was fun! We just kept her in the shade. We brought a big blanket and toys down to the beach and she had a blast just playing. We brought the bassinet portion of our stroller down and ahe would take amazing 2 hour naps on the beach every day! I think this summer will be harder haha. Badger balm makes a baby safe sun screen. We used a little here and there but she was fine with an spf rash guard and being under an umbrella (with uv protection!)

Travel w an infant is soooo much easier than traveling w a toddler. a bottle or nursing at take off and landing is a life saver!

I will say that at four months we did run into a few days of sleep regression w Ds who was a really good sleeper early on.

I'm a first time mom trying to decide whether we should join in on an extended family vacation later this summer. My parents are planning on renting a big house in the Outer Banks for a week this July, along with my brother, SIL and their two kids - who will be three and one by then. My son will be almost four months old in July. I'd love to go, but my husband and I aren't sure if travel with such a young baby is a good idea or not. We live in NYC so we could either rent a car and drive down or fly. And we think the actual vacation part would be pretty low key - hanging out at the house, having cookouts, maybe some beach time.

So, folks who have travelled with young babies before - do you think this is a good idea or are we crazy for thinking it will be more fun than stress? Any good tips or advice for vacations with an almost-four-month-old? (And is it even okay to take a baby to the beach? I know you can't put sunscreen on them for the first six months, but is a sun hat and a beach umbrella enough protection or will we need to stay indoors? Man, I wish babies had an instruction manual.)

ETA: the houses they are looking at all come with pack and plays, so we wouldn't need to worry about hauling one down there!
