@looch: A mosquito net is a great idea! I'll definitely be trying to find some natural/mineral sunscreen too :)

@sloaneandpuffy: You are so right! I'm blessed to have a wonderful baby but it still won't be as relaxing as before. I know he won't remember it but I'm excited that this will be his first family trip too.

This is more of a mental thing for me. Nearly every time I've taken a vacation with my babe, I've concluded that there is no such thing as a vacation with a baby. I know that is going to sound really downer-ish but for me it helps to recalibrate my expectations. For me, vacations used to be about reading books, catching up on sleep and relaxing. No more!! :(

Having said that, it's still nice to get a change of scenery, even if it's just the same sleepless nights in another location!! Hope you have a nice time and your baby adjusts well to the different surroundings.

We're probably going to take our LO to the beach this summer too, my parents own a house about 2.5 hours drive from us and my mom spends a lot of her summer there. I haven't even thought about what to bring yet though, I'll be watching this thread!

Mosquito net, to drape over the pack and play or stroller. Chemical bug sprays aren't recommended for babies and the natural ones don't usually work, IMO. Also, for the sunscreen, look for a mineral one, not chemical. They're super hard to rub in, but they're much better than the standard sunscreens.

I go on a beach trip every summer, last year LO was 8 months old, and he loved the ocean. We're going again in 4 weeks.

We just returned from a short vacay with the baby. She was 8 months old at the time. What I was glad that I did was pack a lot of toys- old and new. And I truly brought everything that she is used to having for her nighttime routine: sound machine, blanket, sheets, toy. As long as you guys try to adhere to his normal schedule you should be a-ok :)

Yay for vacation! When we go on vacation I overpack and don't use so much of the stuff, but I'm still glad I have it just in case. I would just think about your daily routine and maybe write things down throughout the day that you use so you don't forget little things like the bottle brush and dishwasher soap if your LO is bottle fed.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: Yikes! That's a long ways to travel! We go to the beach in shifts too and I probably won't stay more than an hour or two anyway because of my fair skin hahaha ;)

@obxwife: Thankfully the grandparents will be there, and we usually just go to the beach (in shifts this year) and out to dinner. So nothing too whacky, although I will eliminate eating out if that gets too wild! Really hoping for good weather. The last few years have been blah. And last year it took two a two hour ferry ride, and an extra 3 hour drive south.

Aw, I used to go to Emerald Isle for a week every summer growing up! Haven't been in about 10+ years now, though :( So jealous of you gals!

No tips from me... we're planning on taking our 8-week old (will be about 8 weeks) car camping if all goes well in September. LOL.

Us too! Our LO's are the same age, we're going on a family vaca with my family at the end of June, right when he turns 4 months and then a vaca to visit DH's family in July. A little nervous, but excited.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: You'll have a little one on vacation! Wow! We'll be back in the OBX in October too. Love it there. I'm excited to take him on his first trip even though he won't really remember/know what's going on. LOL

@LivsMama: Good idea to order and have it shipped there! He sleeps in his Arms Reach Co Sleeper and we'll probably just take that, it folds up like a pack and play :)

I definitely need to remember some swim diapers!

Funny, we are bringing Liv to OBX in July! That will be her first "real" vacation. I can tell you that we have flown with her and stayed away for 4 days. In addition to what you listed, try to bring as much familiar stuff from home as you can. Loveys, sound machine, blankey, etc. Have him start sleeping in his pack n play (if thats what he will be sleeping in on the trip) so its not a total shock when he gets there. At 4 months, Liv did great on our trip. She adjusted well, but we kept it as normal as we could. Also, dont forget swim diapers!

Oh also, we ordered a bunch of stuff from diapers.com (her diapers, etc) to be delivered when we got there, so we didnt have to travel with that stuff.

We will be vacationing with our LO for the first time this summer! He'll be almost 4 months old when we hit the Outer Banks for our annual family vacation. :)

Other than his usual daily essentials, I plan to bring a big floppy hat for him, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray and plan to get one of those baby tents so he'll be out of the sun when we're on the beach. Won't be taking him in the water so young, maybe a splash in the pool but no ocean water.

Any tips for traveling with my LO for the first time?! :)
