We took our 4 month old across the country to California for a week. It all went fine. Of the six hour flight each way she probably cried 20 mins. The longest 20 mins of our life, though!

I took my son to the Mediterranean at 8 months of age, traveling alone. What helped on that trip was the fact that my aunt organized a stroller, pack and play and car seat so all I was responsible for was the suitcase. She did a little research and ore shopping so we had the essentials when we arrived. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It went well and we did the same trip last summer but for longer!

We did and it was relatively easy. We didn't have any family or help we're we were living so it didn't make much of a difference. In my son's first year we were living in NYC and he went to Martha's Vineyard, France (to visit DH's family, so technically we had help), England, Denmark, Toronto, Washington DC and Hawaii.

I think a lot of it comes down to preparation and expectations. Be prepared for anything as far as packing and organization. Then don't have too many expectations. We knew we would be doing less than half of what we would be doing normally because of nap schedules and feeding, etc. (DS was EBF). We would plan on just one or two activities/sites per day and just go with the flow for the rest.

One of the ways we we made up for it was by staying in nicer places than we would have if we were just traveling by ourselves. Most of DS's first year he wouldn't sleep in the stroller so we were often stuck in the hotel room for 2 naps per day. Also, staying in known family friendly places definitely helps. Trip Advisor is really great for researching family friendly hotels and activities. Depending on where you go, Air BnB or VRBO are also great resources for non hotel stays and getting 2+ bedroom apartments so that you can put the kids in a separate room.

You can do it! We did more weekend trips that worked well. We also flew across country around the year mark, but that was more difficult as he was getting more mobile. Truly, the younger the easier!

We did a trip at 4 months (to visit family) and at 7 months (no family).

Both trips were pretty easy, though I have to say, the trip at 4 months was easier because my LO would sleep anywhere and everywhere! Although even at 7 months, she was still able to sleep in the stroller when we walked around. Also at 4 months, my LO was EBF so I didn't need to worry about food. At 7 months, we had to bring along her food and feeding equipment. Also, there weren't high chairs at many places so we had to hold her and feed her which made it difficult for us to eat.

At 9.5 months, she's much more accustomed to napping in the crib and its gotten more difficult to get out.

We went to the Florida Keys with our 11 month old. It went great, although it was certainly pretty different from our pre-baby vacations. We decided to rent a house, so that DD could have her own room. (Hotel rooms shared with babies who go to bed at 7:30 PM are no fun.) We also basically just planned to take it easy. We spent days lounging around our rental house and sitting on the beach. DD *loved* the beach... although she definitely didn't let us just lounge in the sand like we're used to. One useful tip for a beach vacation is to bring lots of blankets to spread out on the sand, and get some kind of beach tent or umbrella for shade.

@MediaNaranja: not always every year. Some of my husbands family live in salt lake and Roy. His parents have a condo In Park city so we would stay there and go visit family. We went last Memorial Day and we will probably go sometime this winter so that will be like a year and a half.

We have traveled quite a bit but it usually involves visiting family although we do the traveling part alone. We flew with James when he was 3 months to park city Utah. The drove to New Mexico when he was 4 months. Then I also had travel restrictions. We took small weekend trips like to San Diego and Northern California. Wen the twins were 5 months old we flew to park city. Then we just did weekend trips again. When the twins were a year and James was 21 months we did a road trip and went to several national parks on our way out to Utah. As they have gotten older we have done that same drive again plus flown to new york, and colorado. None of them have been relaxing vacations but I love making memories with my kids. It's a ton of work and i am tired at the end of it but its still fun. It's just different than what a vacation used to be before kids.

We went to DC when LO was 6 months and Chicago when she was 7 months. At 11 months, we have a big trip abroad. When we went to DC, she slept the entire time in her stroller and got to see a lot of the sights.

I took my son on vacation when he was 2 months old and then just recently after his first birthday. Both were beach vacations and spending time on the beach really did not work out the first time. It was hot, he was sweating, he was upset, I had to hold him, then needed to cover him since you can't put sunscreen on them until 6 months, and so got a very strange tan line from having us covered. It was awful.

This last time was much better, but he had a hard time. I think because of the change in environment and scheduling. Kids thrive on structure, and vacation put a big strain on him.

We went on a few weekend trips and then a spent a week in San Francisco when DD was 9 months. It was fun! She slept in the carrier, so one of us would wear her and one of us would carry all our stuff, and we still got to do almost everything on our list. The only disappointment was going back to hotel right before the Chinese New Year parade started because DD was tired and cranky and cold. We were able to watch the parade from the hotel room window, but we would,ve liked to be down in the action!

We're scheduled to travel to Toronto and Montreal later this summer, so I'll let you know. I am a little nervous, but I figure it's either this, or we won't go anywhere ever again (we live near no family and they would probably not want to travel with us anyway). :)

LO can be a little bit hard to handle, but I think the key will be to pace ourselves and not try to do too much each day. Also we are renting apartments through Air BnB instead of a hotel room so that we can spread out and have more of the comforts of home. Hopefully we are not too crazy for doing this. :)

i did! DH and I took our 5 month old to Cuba for an all inclusive vacation for a week. We decided it was a good time to go because it was free for the baby to travel, he was still only eating breastmilk so no need to worry about packing food/feeding him solids, he could not crawl/walk yet so no need to worry about running after him. Those were all the positives that made it easy. However, it was definitely not a carefree vacation like we were used to before a baby. Just like back home, everything we did had to revolve around his naps and feeding him. We also had to worry about taking him out in the sun, I basically spent the least time on the beach that i ever did on a beach vacation. But it was okay. We had fun and it was a learning experience. Definitely would have been better if we had some help, even if to just have one night "off" to ourselves. Though we were able to have alone time after baby went to sleep each night and we brought drinks back to our room.

eta: i think the part we planned the worst was dinner time. We made dinner reservations each night for 6pm thinking it would be good for the baby to go early. well, that meant leaving the beach well before 5pm so i could shower, get ready and feed baby. We ended up rushing, baby never ate drank enough before dinner and so we ended up rushing during our dinner so we could feed him again. Definitely in hindsight it would have been better to make our dinners much later so i could stay on beach until 6pm and have time to feed baby and get ready.

Anyone take a vacation with their LO(s) when they were under a year somewhere other than where you had family to help? We are jonesing to travel because my OB cut me off of travel pretty early in my pregnancy, so we're getting a little cabin fever. We've taken them on trips to see family, but mo vacations just for fun. One of our friends just took their 4 month old on vacation to NOLA. That made me start wandering if maybe it's more possible than I thought to go on a vacation when the boys are still babies.

If you went on a vacation with an infant or two, where did you go? Did it feel like a vacation at all? Any tips for how to make it more fun?
