It depends on the situation. But I'm done traveling with my Dad ever, the extra cost is worth reducing stress.

We are doing two weeks in the UK with my parents, aunt and uncle, and sister and her roommate. We will be splitting the cost of the flat that we are renting in London and the cost of the rental cars in Ireland equally. That's pretty standard for us.

We travel with my family frequently. We usually pay for housing and car rental (hubby has a lot of hotel points and we always stay somewhere nice and for free) and my parents always pays for meals and activities that we do.

My younger bro never paid for anything and we kind of let him off the hook bc he was single. He got married last year so I'm not sure what we're going to do this year.

We go on vacation with my family a LOT, and my parents always pay for everything. It gets pretty awkward actually, because we will try to pay for a meal or at least split and my dad is always like "NOOOOOOOOOO!". That being said, we are usually down to go wherever it is that my family wants to go- we are going to a big waterpark resort thing this year and Disney next year. My parents usually pick a couple of locations and I research hotels to find something fun for everyone in our family (an older couple, my husband and me with a toddler, and my two siblings in college plus one SO for my sister). We all like doing the same types of things and are very close, so we don't typically argue about rooms and stuff. I'm happy to sleep on an air mattress in the living room if I get to go somewhere fun!

We have never been on vacation with my ILs really- they don't tend to travel except to visit my hub's grandmother.

My parents own a place I the outer banks, so we go several times a year. It's essentially a free place to stay, so we buy as much of the food as we possibly can & as many of the meals out as we can. Everyone pitches in, including my siblings. We all take turns cooking, too.

My mom and I are polar opposites & it's harder for us to vacation together now that A) our extended family is a total of 10 people in one house and B) we have different parenting styles.
If we are going for a week, DH, the kids & I rent our own place next door. That way we have a place of our own but mom & dads house is "home base". The 10 of us are still together all day long, so it's the perfect compromise.

For a long weekend, we stay together :)

If this is at all possible, can I suggest a cruise? Easiest possible way to get everybody what they want. You can spend time together or separately, SIL gets her privacy/romance, BIL gets to walk to the bars, done.

We have done a lot of traveling with our parents, and just for the perspective, the situation you are describing sounds beyond absurd. We have never had any kind of argument or even discussion about a shared trip. The couple who is organizing the trip gets to organize the trip, period, and everybody else can either come along or say "no thank you." That still holds true if there are shared costs involved. It would make way more sense if your parents just picked a house and said here's how much this will cost everybody, take it or leave it. If BIL or SIL can't handle it, they could get a separate place nearby, or just sit this one out. Easy.

Yeah it sounds like one person has to be in charge because there are too many conflicting opinions. Usually it's the oldest person attending. We used to go to the outer banks as an extended family but I pulled the plug when I found out I wasn't going to "graduate" from the bunk room shared with my cousins even if I was married. I wasn't paying for the trip but I was more than willing to contribute especially if it meant getting my own room. Otherwise we only visit family at their owned vacation homes now, at my parents shore house we have a designated bedroom and at dh's family home we just get whatever is available.

@catomd00: Oh I want to get my own place, especially after SIL's behavior, but I know a family vacation where we all stay in the same house is important to my in-laws. I figured if it is awful, we can say we gave it a try, and then never do another family vacation again

@catomd00: @Mrs.KMM: @JoyfulKiwi: @JoyfulKiwi: She thinks because she got married in September that every vacation should be romantic. She insisted on the queen and has no problem with in-laws sleeping on the twins. She thinks that's my fault, because we vetoed the expensive house, even though in-laws didn't want to pay that much more either. She also said she had to have a private bathroom, so the other BIL will either have to share with his parents or with us. It doesn't make sense for him to share with us, because our bathroom is on a different floor than his room, and he would have to go through our bedroom (where the kids could be sleeping) to get to it.

My mom came for part of our vacay last year and she paid for two nights of hotel and invited us to stay with. We covered her meals one day.. This year we are covering 5 nights of hotel and invited her. She is covering all her meals but not up front. I will give her the total at the end or she will pay for a couple of all of our meals at the end of the trip so it evens out. I wouldn't normally worry about meals but since it is Disney it is super pricy and not in our budget to cover her. We talked about it way ahead of time. By the way I found an awesome app today called Travelfy. It tracks costs, itineraries and ideas. Love it!!

We've done it several ways. Depending on where we are going, sometimes we will book the accommodation in advance and just cover the whole cost. Other times we have met up with family members who have covered the cost (but then we cover a nice meal or an activity). I don't think there is one magic formula, but I would expect everyone to make an effort to be on the same page.

Most of our vacations with family entail is staying at the home of someone in our family. We are going to a wedding this summer with my side of the family (my parents, my aunt/uncle, & my cousin and sister). I booked the house and it took forever to find a place with enough queen beds. We're splitting the cost evenly-ish (we're paying more because we"ll stay an extra night and will pay the whole pet deposit because it's our dog).
I don't think it's fair for the in-laws to be in the twins. It does seem fair for you to get the master because your family has more bodies to accommodate. SIL needs to deal with the twin beds. Tell her to bring her own king sheets and push the beds together!

@catomd00: Agreed! While it's nice if you can find something with all Kings and Queens, that isn't always an option. The parents should definitely get a larger bed and SIL can sleep on the Twins. DH and I have done that so many times!

With my family, we typically split everything but everyone tends to be in agreement regarding what we're looking for so no issues there.

With my in-laws, they usually pay for the rental house and we provide meals/entertainment. Since they're paying for the house, they pick it. Occasionally they've narrowed it to 2 and put it to a majority vote.

We also have girls weekends with me, MIL, SIL, DH's aunt and a family friend. For those we split everything evenly but MIL picks the house because she's the biggest type-A planner in the group.

We vacation with my parents and brother and SIL. My parents pay for the house and we pay for groceries and some meals out. The house we've rented most often has rooms with a king (parents take that), queen bed (let bro and SIL have that), two fulls (we take this, more comfortable to sleep apart since we're used to king) and twin bunks (DS sleeps there.). Parents get their own bathroom and the rest of us share. Usually works out fine.

@catomd00: No, this will be our first vacation together, so I'm a little worried haha

@Mrs. Lion: We have offered to pay more for a larger room, since we need space for our two kids. But it's still tough, because the other rooms left are one with a queen bed, one with bunkbeds, and one with two twins. Single BIL said he'll sleep on the bunkbeds, but SIL is married, so she wants her and BIL to have the queen. So is it fair to have the in-laws sleep on the twins? I don't know. This is the best house we've found so far, and I feel like we've been debating houses for weeks.

My side of the family are big planners so when we go with my parents, my dad does most of the planning and they pay for mostly everything, we try to take them out for a nice meal and pay for our entertainment. My dad is great at researching and taking the needs of our family into account and we trust his to plan something great.

DH's family doesn't travel and doesn't plan. The youngest BIL is graduating from university this spring and we couldn't find a hotel to be able to stay over, they were all booked, so I researched a big vacation house and pitched the idea for the whole family (mil and FIL and 6 siblings with spouses and kids - including us). It took a lot of pestering but people are finally sending us money to split the costs evenly. It has queen beds and a master....I'm really hoping we get he master as we planned it and it has a king, and we are the only ones who's co sleep. DH is also the oldest sibling and we will likely be the first to arrive at the rental house, and probably stay the most nights. It hasn't been diacussed yet tho. I'm currently trying to organize a meal sign up so that each couple signs up to bring and make the food for each meal while we are there.

We have only vacationed with the ILs once. Hey don't travel often so relied on me to plan it all (which I enjoy) and we split the costs evenly. They might have more opinions on things if we decide to do it again, but they would likely trust us to ultimately book something that would work best for everyone.

When we travel with my parents they book a rental and pay for most everything. We buy some groceries and dinners out.
