@Mrs. Jacks: I sooo badly wanted to message you and have you chime in on this annoying Facebook debate I was roped into the other day! There was a woman asking about vaccines on a crunchy but mixed page and people were going insane talking about how they cause autism and kill babies! Then an anti vaccine pediatrician came on and talked about how vaccines gave problems to her children and seemed to validate everyone's insanity soley because she was a ped or claimed to be.

I was scared before because i wasnt educated and there is a lot of conflicting information out there. its hard to trust our government on anything when in the past they have steered us wrong (such as BPA and endocrine dsirupters in plastics). Anyone who does their research like i did will see that the study linking vaccines to autism was hugely discredited! My take is this: there are risks with everything! I hate some of the nasty ingredients in vaccines and I do sometimes wonder about them, particularly if they are newer and less of their effect is known. If you look at the statistics though the pros of vaccinating seem to far outweigh the cons. Some babies do have bad reactions but that can be true of almost any medicine and even certain foods. Diseases like measles and whopping cough are returning and mutauting all because Jenny McCarthy had to have something to blame her sons condition on. Most autism seems to be genetic and some increase in chances linked to things like induced labors, older moms, male children or having pregnancies closer than 18 months apart. The jury is still out on all of this stuff though and no one for certain knows the cause.i know a woman who never vaccinated or circumsized and who breasted and did everything in that natural way and her son is on the spectrum. I totally feel scared all the time abou everything I do and how it affects my child but in the end I think you just have to do your research, weigh the pros and cons and then follow your instincts.

It does bother me that unvaccinated children can affect my child and my world but I also don't feel like its something we should require at this point.

We pick and choose which vaccines to give (no hep B since she's not sexually active or sharing needles, no flu, no chicken pox, etc), and delay some (no MMR until right before school). There are other, proven things to worry about from vaccines besides autism. Just google "vaccine injury" and you'll see stories of the millions in damages paid to parents of permanently hurt children.

We never thought twice about giving our LO vaccines. I'm normally not a person who likes to put iffy stuff into my body but when it comes to serious illnesses which these vaccines prevent, I believe there is no messing around. I haven't ready any studies, papers, whatever on the topic so I don't know enough about either side of the argument.

And truth be told, I'm not even certain on the vaccines with which I will take issue in the future. Fortunately or not, I've got some time to figure it out.

@Vegmama: Those live virus vaccines really pack a punch. They're the only ones my daughter has had an adverse reaction to -- fever for a couple of days.

We follow the recommended vaccine schedule though. It's supported by research, so I'm comfortable with it.

pro vaccines 100000% but I always get nervous after P gets his shots but no way in hell am I going to let unwarranted advice and fear affect my child's health. honestly, I don't even feel comfortable with my child around other children who are not vaccinated before he is old enough to have all his shots (logically I know its impossible to protect him from this) but it really bothers me when other people's decisions have the potential to affect my child's life negatively.

@LizSmith: Polio was eradicated in all but 4 countries ... Until the leader of one of the countries claimed we were putting HIV in the vaccines. They quit vaccinating for polio, and it spread to 21 countries. Now, that they've started vaccinating again, it's back down to the smaller number. We just learned about that last night, so I feel like Polio is a good example of when vaccines work.

I did extensive research for paper on the vaccine-autism link when I was in my speech path grad program. I must echo what Mrs. Jacks mentioned about correlation not implying causation and that often times the signs of autism and PDD were already there but parents may not have seen them until the age of the MMR vaccine. This is the main reason I have such a huge problem with Jenny McCarthy joining the View-the evidence just isn't there.

I will be vaccinating my future children without question. My husband and my family don't have a history of adverse reactions to vaccines. The diseases that have vaccines available are scary and not ones I want to tangle with.

I haven't done any research, and I don't have a LO yet, but I am totally leery of vaccines. I don't need any concrete link between any risks for me to avoid them. There is no concrete links between power lines and cancer, but I've seen enough cancer to know that i will never live under them.

I'm not really worried about autism (though with regards to the discredited study, if you read the other side of the story, there were some pretty interesting rebuttals to most of the claims made to discredit it), but other adverse reactions. I honestly can't say how I feel. People always talk about autism but ignore the other horrible side effects that even doctors admit can happen. It's overwhelming. I will 100% do a modified schedule, and skip some that there's no risk of them coming into contact with. But then how do you weigh the risk of a disease versus the risk of a bad side effect. The end result can be equally bad with either, even up to death. Vaccines DO kill people.

Also, I've heard (from less reliable sources) that there's some reason to believe that vaccines aren't actually responsible for the dying out of certain diseases. Other major diseases have died out on their own without any treatment, and they say polio and some others were already declining drastically *before* the vaccines were introduced.

I just wish I knew where to get credible information that I trust. Not from the drug companies. Not really from doctors, given how many give out bad information on a regular basis. Oy.

My only concern about vaccines is allergic reactions, and then mainly because I have a history of them. I personally would be more comfortable spreading vaccines out a bit, just long enough that it's easier to identify the cause of the reaction if one occurs. But we'll be discussing it with the pediatrician we choose and will make our decision after that.

Oh and my husband who is an environmental scientist told me that the amount of toxins in vaccines is no more than you find in most of the products we use on a daily basis and the benefits definitely outweigh the risks when you look at the numbers of diseases that were gone and now all of the sudden have returned with a vengeance since so many people stopped vaccination. Make the decision that is right for you but try to be informed. There are risks with any and every medical procedure.

Bumping this thread! We went to an AMAZING vaccine workshop last night (presented by a doctor, at our midwife's office).

It was so informative. He said, again, that there is absolutely NO link (as far as science is concerned) to autism with mmr. He's more concerned with parents & doctors who decide to give their kids several vaccines at once (especially ones that are live-virus). He encourages NOT delaying the schedule a lot, but does endorse separating vaccines if you're worried about reactions, etc.

It was really amazing, and calmed a lot of my fears!

He gave us a link to some really awesome vaccine and toxin information.

@banana: it's still a fairly new study being done, but it started when this doctor noticed a huge increase in his patient's children being diagnosed with Autism. Turns out he was a big fan of dripping the pitocin during labor and all of a sudden he went from having 10% of moms having Autistic children to almost 60%. Now more formal studies are being done. Because ASD tends to be a behavior and developmental disorder, some doctors definitely believe that the baby getting mild oxygen deprivation over and over again throughout labor is not enough for anything wrong to show up right away but to actually show up later as the baby develops, which could explain why you typically don't see symptoms until the child is around 18 months.

@MamaMoose is correct, the study was actually a fraud and there is no correlation between vaccines and Autism. I work with Autistic kids for a living and I can tell you there was actually a bunch of them that were not vaccinated and still developed Autism.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and it shows up differently in a lot of children. What looks like Autism in one child looks like something else completely in another. ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is more of an umbrella in which a large group of symptoms and behaviors are put under so that they are explainable and have a name. It would make sense that because it is so different in many children that there is no one thing that causes Autism. Vaccination is one of those things that for the most part is no longer considered a contributing factor because the study that supported it the most was faked and not true.

There have actually been studies done that suggest that there is bigger link between the use of pitocin and children with Autism. They believe that it's because the average contraction on pitocin is longer and harder than a standard contraction and may be causing some subtle changes in the baby's brain due to mild oxygen deprivation. I think that people are just desperate to find a single cause so that they can cure their child or so they can try to prevent it from happening, but I don't think we will ever get one single reason for it.

I was always super pro-vaccines until all this Autism talk started. -.- Had a moment of hesitation, but decided to do what was best for our LO. DH and I were vaccinated and we're fine, plus I have friends who work at the CDC who helped make me feel a lot better about vaccinating our LO.

I did talk to my pediatrician about possibly modifying the schedule, but didn't want to subject my LO to multiple visits and more pain.

I WOULD strongly encourage a modified schedule. I don't think one single vaccine is likely to cause autism, but giving three or more at a time is a higher risk.
