Fetal cell lines used in medicine don't bother me in the least. 1 cell can give rise to millions or billions which can make research, stem cell therapy, and vaccines possible. It upsets me far more that so many electively aborted foetuses are disposed and not used for research purposes. Who knows where stem cell research and vaccines would be if the laws had been different since the technology has been available!

I'll still use/believe in the vaccines. I don't like that fetal cell lines are used but I guess you could say that a good thing (vaccines) came out of it. I think MrsSCB put it nicely.

I have heard this and it doesn't change my opinion. Also, I kind of feel like even if you were pro-life, I don't really see why it should turn you against vaccines or anything. Here's my reasoning -- the fetuses from which they took the cells would have been aborted regardless. The abortions didn't happen in order to make vaccines. If these fetuses were going to be aborted no matter what, isn't it better that something good came of it, something that saves millions of lives?

Yes, I've heard this before. It does not change my stance on vaccines.

I was aware of it, and it does not affect my use of the vaccines. I think it's just a couple of vaccines, and there aren't currently alternatives thst were not cultured that way for those few vaccines. If there were, I would use the alternative (assuming comparable safety and effectiveness, etc). I do wish there were alternatives with less questionable origins, and hope there will be some available someday.

My cousin told me "vaccines are made from aborted babies" once and I didn't believe her. It guess she's right. It doesn't change my plan to vaccinate my future LOs.

I had no idea this was a real thing! I was looking on some crunchy food blog about something related to babies, and someone in a comment mentioned that "vaccines are made from babies." It sounded outrageous to me, so I googled it and ended up in a rabbit hole, turns out what the commenter said ("vaccines are from fetuses") is totally untrue, but the first vaccines were cultured on the cells from fetuses that were aborted electively. Of course now they just keep culturing the cells from the old ones.

Here's a source: http://www.chop.edu/service/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-safety/vaccine-ingredients/fetal-tissues.html

Here's the official statement from the Vatican: http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=6942

...basically they said to use alternatives when available.

Were you aware of this? If you are pro-life, does it affect your stance on vaccines?

FWIW, it doesn't affect my pro-vax perspective, although I do think it is interesting how often we take medicine for granted without realizing the complex history behind it!
