@Iced Tea: @sapphire: I was pretty much passing out between pushes. I'm not exaggerating. Also, at my 38, 39, and 40 week appts, we had discussed interventions and I told my OB to do what he needed except for an episiotomy. I'm surprised they didn't ask, but I think they did what they felt they needed to do and I would have said heck yes if asked.

Luckily I only had a 2nd degree tear and healing was fine. The only alternative to the vacuum at that point was continuing to push (which was getting more and more ineffective) OR an emergency C-section under general anesthesia with risk for serious hemorrhaging because my platelets were at 50K, the bare minimum needed for surgery.

They are required to get informed consent for any procedures. Doing it without asking is wrong.

Like @sapphire said, I'm surprised they didn't consult you! I feel like that's something they should have to do, unless it's a life and death situation.

DD was a vacuum assist delivery. She was sunny side up which made it really hard to push her out. Her heart rate was dropping so they pushed the vacuum. To this day I think they were overreacting (there were other things that happened with this team that make me believe that). I tore more than I would have otherwise, and had a long recovery.

Wow, not asking is really unethical. You should have been counseled about potential risks.

I had a vacuum delivery after pushing for 4.5 hours. It was successful and I'm thankful because I was so exhausted at that point after 24 hours of labor, no sleep, little food, and that much pushing.

DD was vacuum assisted. She was sunny side up and got stuck on my hip. I couldn't push hard enough after being in active labor for 27 hours and pushing for two to get her unstuck.

My first was vacuumed out! I had a really long induction and pushed for almost 2 hrs.. I had no energy! So they sucked her out and I found out later as well and I was ok with it since I wanted her out too!

LO1 was ventouse delivery - I was pushing for an hour, she was going into distress, had an episiotomy and vacuum delivery. She had quite an egg head for a few days.

LO2 was posterior and OB used kiwi cup to assist in turning her as I pushed. No episiotomy, no tearing, managed to get her out fairly quickly once she turned the right way around. No egg head either, but she did have the red mark under her hair from the suction cup.

I went into labor with DS and pushed for well over an hour. It was a very short labor and delivery (less than 3 hours), but my doctor was concerned I wasn't making any progress and the nurses kept telling me to stop pushing because I would rupture my cervix. They had to get him out though because the cord was wrapped around his neck, so my doc made the decision to give me an episiotomy and use a vacuum to get him out over an emergency c.

I had a forceps delivery. The OB said she could try the vacuum first but the policy of the hospital was if it popped off twice, we had to do a c section (and she didn't think the vacuum would work). She felt confident she could get him out with the forceps (and she did). His head was huge and stuck. The nurses said I was lucky because most OB's don't do forceps any more and had anyone else been on call, I probably would've gotten a c section after pushing for 1.5 hours!

My first baby was born via ventouse and lost a ring of skin off her head when the cup came off. Poor wee girl was very angry for her first few days earthside! I knew they were using the cup because my midwife called the on call OB and they gave me an episiotomy to help baby out.

I had a vacuum assist with my first. Her heart rate wasn't responding well to contractions and they just really wanted her out so the OB suggested it and let me decide, which I was fine with as I also wanted it over with! I had been in labor or pushing for a terribly long time but I was ready. She had a big bump on her head for a couple weeks and was a little jaundiced, which they said is common with the vacuum bump she had. And I had some tearing but I think I would have anyway. I had no drugs and the vacuum definitely hurt though- but what didn't at that point?

My daughter was a vacuum assisted delivery. I was induced, but didn't progress much all day so it was taking a long time (ended up taking 28 hrs total). I had been pushing for 4.5 hrs, but DD was just not ideally positioned (I have twins and my son was transverse across the top of my uterus, so my daughter was "head down" but had to be positioned sort of sideways because there just wasn't room for her to stretch out). Anyway, I was actually begging for a c section at that point because my epidural wasn't working and I was over it. But my OB was really trying to help me have a vaginal birth for both babies because she knew that was my goal. She said as a last ditch effort we could do the vacuum and if it popped off twice she would do a c section. I was super relieved because I just wanted it over! I finally managed to push her out on the second time with the vacuum. All that and my son ended up being an emergency c section after all. But I am very glad I was able to experience a vaginal birth since I'm not having any more kids! My daughter did have weird marks on her head afterward from the vacuum, but otherwise no issues. I was lucky to avoid an episiotomy and tearing, which I hear can be common with the vacuum.

I was in labor for 24 hours and pushed for 1 hour. Due to some bleeding complications, they really wanted to avoid a C-section, but they wanted him out since my water had been broken for that entire 25 hours (yay inductions.... not).

So, they used the vacuum twice to get LO out. Funnily enough... neither DH or I realized it! And they didn't ask. We didn't find out until later on in our hospital stay. It doesn't bother me at all, but I do find it a bit odd that I didn't even know.

What about you? Did your OB ask? Did you know?
