Wow this is interesting. I always wondered why breech seems to automatically equal a Csection.

Woo! My hospital (Oregon Health Sciences University) delivers breechs vaginally, and it's awesome. I'm so happy to know I have that choice should I ever need it.

@hergreenapples: Very true! I think the most hope comes from the new obgyns that will be trained in this in school so the knowledge should become more widespread here in the coming years! Woot Woot!

For me, it would definitely give me hope in seeking out a provider with this training and ability though. Kind of like with vbac, I know that they are out there I just have to find them! =)

@prettylizy: I have a friend that is a VERY natural minded momma that was forced into a cesarean. She had a planned one so that the hospital could get a team together willing to follow her "natural cesarean" birthplan (which did go very well), but she's still suffered from PTSD from it. Almost decided to not have anymore children... thankfully she's moving and has decided that hbac is the way she'll go in her future pregnancies!

@Mrsbells: I think it's crazy that people will sue for things that go wrong in vaginal births but rarely do for things that go wrong in cesareans, especially considering morbidity rates AND mortality rates are higher.

@katiew92081: That's great! I'd take an episiotomy over a cesarean anyday!

This is awesome news.....I hope it actually happens in Canada (it's certainly not widespread to date, at least not in the experiences of women I know). It will be dependent on our OBs to adopt it in practice, not just on paper.

@LivsMama: I agree it would likely be a long time coming before it's common practice & am so thankful my CPM is highly experienced in breech birth so I won't ever have to worry about being pressured into another unnecessary cesarean. It's much different for a provider to choose not to practice it, like with vbac, than to not be trained in it though (like our obgyns here).

I'm just glad Canada is bring back training their professionals in this area.

My sil delivered her daughter frank breech. It wasn't realized until she was actually in laborious. She was lucky to be delivering at a hospital where there was one Ob on staff that was experienced in delivering babies like this. She had to have an episiotomy but still better then a cs!

@LivsMama: yes peopleh ere are so interested in suing and thats why doctors would rather cover their butts and do the c-section because things are less likely to go wrong.

I dont think youll see an increase in allowing this here any time soon. Perhaps for home births, but not in hospital settings. Im in NYC, and I dont think any doctors Ive seen or my friends have seen would even attempt it whether its recommended or not. The US has WAY too much liability and lawsuits. They wont take the risk of complications. Thats my opinion anyhow (I have a friend who is an OB and she said "not a chance...")

I was just talking with a mama last week who was forced into a section because there is not one Dr in our area that will delivery a breech baby. I hope that more information comes out re: vaginal breech deliveries.

This is absolutely fantastic news (old news from 09 but definitely new to me) and I am so happy for the Canadian moms that have recently come into having more evidence based choices for their births! I hope that this perspective and training moves down our way SOON!
