When we went for our first appointment with our OB, we were shocked to find out we were having twins. However, the OB was concerned because one sac was about a third the size of the other.. the babies were pretty similar in length though. We were torn how to feel about this because of the idea that one of the twins could vanish and should that happen we wanted to be okay with having one baby as well. The following week their sacs were the exact same size and the OB said they'd be fine moving forward. We're half-way through our pregnancy now and thankfully our twins are both thriving. I hope your sister receives some good news when she returns to her OB... The waiting period is difficult! Best wishes!

@banana: yeah, usually it happens before we even know there are twins. well, i can tell you when i had my first u/s at around 6 weeks? they weren't sure whether i had twins. they said it COULD be twins. they weren't able to tell more clearly until the 7th week u/s. even then, one twin was "smaller" than the other and they said there was a chance it might "vanish".... but luckily, now, they're both the same weight - so i wish the very best for your sis. 5.5 weeks is still really early!!!

@mamamoose: Oh wow. So similar to my sis. She's really not feeling well at all right now. With her first, she had very minor symptoms but with this pregnancy, she feels way more sick. I'm happy for your husband's cousin that they were able to deliver a healthy baby boy!

@pastaandpotato: Interesting...Apparently it happens more than we think. Something like 30% of all multi-fetus pregnancies end up with a vanishing twin (before the 12 week mark).

@chopsuey119: Vanishing baby? Never heard of that either. That must've been so hard for her. :(

I've never heard about vanishing twin, but my friend had a vanishing baby. She got a positive pregnancy test, they saw the sac but no heartbeat ever. Her belly continued to grow, but there was no baby. Weirdest thing.

My husbands cousin had this happen. It was difficult for her knowing that it happened but honestly it was very clear something was wrong. She was very very sick at the beginning of the pregnancy and never felt right. But as soon as one of the twins vanished her pregnancy was 100% smooth sailing. She was very sad to lose one of the babies but she also knew that losing one of the babies probably allowed her to bring a perfectly healthy baby boy into the world.

@tequiro21: Yes, they saw 2 sacs. One had a definite yolk in it, the other they said they weren't quite sure. She asked the nurse why she was only seeing one yolk and they told her that it may be that one didn't "stick" so it might be a case of vanishing twin syndrome. I had never heard of this before and was quite shocked. that it even existed. She had the ultrasound at 5 1/2 weeks (very early due to previous miscarriages) and that's what they found. She finds out next week whether both stuck or not.

So happy for you that one didn't vanish!!! I hope that same for my sis.

Has anyone experienced the vanishing twin syndrome?

My sister found out she was pregnant 2 weeks ago (we're both pregnant at the same time...so excited!) and during her ultrasound she was told that they might be having twins! But she was warned about vanishing twins syndrome so was curious to see if anyone else had experienced this.

Apparently it's when a woman is originally carrying twins and one of them doesn't stick and gets reabsorbed back into the body. After doing some research online, it looks like it can be fairly common and usually happens before the 1st ultrasound (at around 8-10 weeks). So it could happen without knowing it, unless you get an early ultrasound.

I'm so scared for my sister (she wants twins so badly) so wanted to reach out to the Hellobee community for advice/information.
