@Kemma: that will be my plan of attack for next time. I loved fruits while pregnant though. I'll try to steer towards veggies in salads instead.

@ShootingStar: I was just grabbing onto anything she said to give me the potential, but it sounds like it won't make that much of a difference and I may just make big babies.

I definitely will watch my carb intake I think because I gained a significant amount of weight.

@Cherrybee: no I didn't have it and don't expect to, but it was mentioned as something I could try to keep the size of my baby a bit lower for a potential vbac. Although, the midwife said it might not have any impact.

If you don't have GD, then eating the GD diet isn't going to make the baby smaller. For me, I stuck to about 15 carbs at breakfast and lunch, and 30-45 for dinner. All meals had to have protein. So I could eat rice, potatoes, etc. But only a small amount. I think your biggest challenge is finding appropriate protein sources.

I could eat oats in the morning, 2-3 slices of whole grain bread for lunch and small portions of rice / potatoes / rice for dinner and still have ok numbers so for most GD ladies it's about trial and error as to what spikes their sugars.

If you don't gave GD then eating a low-gi, low sugar diet with complex carbs and extra protein (cheese, Greek yoghurt, protein powders) might be the way to go.

I had GD with both pregnancies, but I didn't have a vegetarian diet. Quinoa is high in carbs and not very GD friendly. Brown rice is better than white rice, but I found that rice in general brought my numbers too high. I had luck with a small bowl of oatmeal in the morning, but I had to limit other carbs at breakfast to make it work.

Tofu was always a safe bet for me, and it can be cooked in so many ways. Cheese was also satisfying and easy to eat. Nuts make a great snack as well.

I learned that the key to keeping my numbers low was to keep my metabolism high throughout the day by eating every 2-3 hours. I would eat low carb meals, and eat carbs between meals like fruit or a glass of milk. It made having GD much more manageable in my second pregnancy. My baby was also on the smaller side at 6lb born at 39w 1d.

@Mrs. Goose: So you didnt have GD last time? Are you expecting to have it next time?

With GD, it depends on what treatment you are on. If you're on insulin, you can have those things as long as your portion sizes and insulin doses are correct to give you stable blood sugar.

I'm controlling mine through diet, so I have to be very strict and all three of the foods you mentioned are off limits for me. I personally couldn't do it without meat but I'm sure its possible (but very limited).

If, however, you don't actually have GD and just want to eat healthily, I wouldn't worry about what is GD friendly - just switch to wholegrains and enjoy a range of multi coloured veggies. The thing is, in a healthy pregnancy, baby will take what he/she needs, regardless of what you eat. With GD, your body is forcing extra sugar onto the baby but, without GD, your body sees to it that they get just what they need.

Tofu?

I had GD and I found that I was able to have small amounts of certain carbs, but it does help when I can offset it with protein also. From what I gather from different people, it seems like each person can handle different amounts and kinds of carb without raising their # so I def had to do trial and error.

Has anyone done a vegetarian GD diet? What did it look like?

Also, can you have things like oats, quinoa, and brown rice?

I am not currently pregnant, but just thinking about trying a modified diet next time to potentially help reduce baby size even though I didn't have GD. I am a vegetarian and can't eat beans so it limits my protein options a bit.
