@MamaG: I know I'm way late in getting back to you, but that's exactly it. Because his new plan is effective the day of the birth. I see people make this mistake all the time and it's heartbreaking after 30 days since that's the time frame under ERISA plans that you have to make changes. I feel like birth of a child should be longer since the first 30 days after having a baby, you're not exactly sleeping well.

@lilyofthewest: Ouch. Not much to do to fix it at this point. But I'd probably not allow DH to make any financial (including insurance) decisions for a long time without getting me involved.

Thankfully, DH typically defers to me on most all things medical insurance.

@MamaG: Yup. And this plan has zero coverage for out of hospital birth.

@2PeasinaPod: I think you have a benefits background. Is this all not covered because of the birth and all related aspects now falling to the new plan as it's effective at the point of birth which is when pre-natal care is typically billed?

I'm sorry - sounds SO frustrating! But since it hasn't been THAT long, I think you husband should appeal to his boss/HR department to see if they can reopen the window for you to switch back. One of my husband's coworkers had a baby, and in her new mom haze she missed her enrollment window entirely and never added her daughter as a dependent. Their boss was able to pull some strings with HR and get her enrollment window reopened almost three months after the baby was born.

I just want to say I'm sorry. =( I've made some pretty big financial screwups in my life and they are so, SO hard to deal with. My husband is typically very gracious about these things but it HURTS physically to make a mistake like this.

Eek...as soon as I saw you say that he used the baby's birth to switch back, I knew where the rest of your post was going. I'm so sorry! I know that you know this now, but life events are always effective the day the event happens. So, the day of your marriage, the day of the birth.

Is your LO less than 30 days old? If so, he still has time to switch back. I'm assuming that LO is older than that, but it's worth a shot to ask.

I'm really sorry :bummed:

I am so mad at my partner right now. So mad.

We got legally married while I was pregnant so we could use the life event to switch to an insurance plan that covered midwifery care and home birth.

When the baby was a couple of weeks old, Sweetie decided to use the birth as a life event to switch back to the old insurance which has much better coverage for his GP.

I was not really sleeping at all then due to baby with as yet undiagnosed health problems who cried all the time and wouldn't sleep. Even so, I told Sweetie to check with the benefits department about what the effective date would be and how that might affect coverage for bulk-billed prenatal care and the birth.

Sweetie forgot to check. Consequence, my prenatal care and birth are not covered.

We got married when we did for no reason. We spent several months paying more for a different insurance plan for no reason. We paid OOP for two of Sweetie's GP visits for no reason. And we spent thousands of dollars on my prenatal care and birth for no reason.

And the baby won't f-ing sleep today.
