@pachamama: Awesome, thanks! I’ll check out Mountain Warehouse. Luckily, it’s never cold here so lightweight is perfect for us. I think we’ll get the Oaki rain boots, too.

@JJ2626: There were very few days that my son didn´t wear his boots, so I guess they were good to run and play in! I sent him in sneakers a few day, hot days and he was the only one. Same with rain pants- every single day pretty much he wears them. Most kids have Pyret, I got some lightweight ones from Mountain Warehouse. Have you seen MountainWarehouse? https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/us/ ? I just got a winter haul from there.

LLBean, Carters (100% cotton stuff) and Gap has been holding up well for him otherwise.

@pachamama: Went back to find this thread since we are now shopping for preschool. Thanks for all your suggestions! For the Oaki boots-can he run and play easily in them? They want her to wear rain boots every day even when it’s sunny and they seem so heavy!

@pachamama: Also, I have plain waffle shirts from Old Navy circa 2003 that have held up through 8 boys. No idea if the current ones are made the same, but our hand me downs are going strong and my nephews play hard.

@JJ2626: everyone at our preschool also wears rain pants every day too... They usually prefer the Pyret bibbed ones because you can layer (short sleeve to heave winter coat).
@SteelerGirl: yeah I need to hit up our consignment shop!
@wrkbrk: will do, we love llbean. We have an outlet too but I would think that's all the low end stuff (like our Gap outlet next to it is all garbage)
@Silva: great suggestions. I put some wool stuff on his Christmas list

We liked Mini Boden for pants and Crewcuts or Ralph Lauren sweatshirts and long sleeves (even the outlet ones) for our oldest. They’ve held up very well and now his little brother is wearing them 4 years later. Other good investment was this North Face snow jacket with a fleece inside that zips off. He’s worn them together as one piece for snow days and the jacket or fleece separately on other occasions. They look almost new even after tons of use. A little pricey up front but literally years of usage between the two boys.

We like to check out our local used kids clothing store regularly for Hanna Andersson stuff. You can get good deals that way, and they really hold up.

I've also found that Tucker & Tate (at Nordstrom) is great quality.

This is a little different, but when my son was in an outdoor preschool I dressed him in mountain warehouse hiking pants (you can buy them on Amazon). They last really well. If it was cold, he wore wool long underwear underneath. If it was really wet he wore rain pants on top.

@pachamama: Just have to say this is the approach we have taken. Buy cheaper stuff with the expectation that it will only last one season. I was buying higher price things and my daughter was still destroying them - either wearing out the knees or eventually stains that just wouldn't come out. We have never been positive if we would have a second but even if we do there is no guarantee the clothes will fit at the right time. Also my daughter became so opinionated about her clothes around three, I assume if we have a second they might not like the same clothes.

We spend more on outerwear and socks (coats, rain pants, snow pants, wool socks, boots) - typically bogs and LL Bean. But play clothes, in our house, are meant to be destroyed by the end of the season. I wait for good sales and buy it all as cheap as possible.

Also, cat and jack has a one year guarantee if you keep your receipts.

Hanna Andersson for basics, but I have also been happy with the leggings I've gotten my daughter from Primary (but she isn't particularly hard on clothing. They are nice and thick and remind me of Boden's leggings)
When we are going to be out for a long time, we do wool and then if it's very cold a fleece layer over that. I am basically always looking for wool baselayers because they are expensive if not on sale or used. Nui Organics and Polarn both have great end of season sales and I often stock up then. I can sometimes find good used options on Kidizen. People also really like Patagonia's base layers, and they are lifetime guaranteed- I've sent in one coat that they mailed me store credit in return for, and another that they repaired the zipper on and sent back to me. Was very happy both times (I wasn't expecting the store credit- the coat was like 3 years old, I was just hoping they'd replace the zipper!).
So for example- very cold day, out for several hours: wool pants and wool top (polarn, nui, maybe some of the european brands like Engel), then poly fleece sweatpants and a fleece shirt. I do have a pair of thick wool pants that I love from Disana for my son, they are thick and warm enough to be base and secondary layer all in one.
We get DarnTough wool socks once they have big enough feet, before that I do smart wool or polarn wool socks.
Sounds like you have outerwear covered!
I've found wool to be surprisingly resilient to kid play, some of the things are starting to get holes now but they are on their third kid.

Signed,
A mom with misplaced anxiety about her children being cold when they are away from her.

@JJ2626: Im sure they'll give you good suggestions but here's my unsolicited outdoor gear suggestions: We've had good luck with the Oaki Muddy Buddy (better than the Tuffo option), Oaki and Tundra boots (Bogs are great too), and Pyret rain gloves with fabric gloves underneath. Llbean/Thinsulate mittens with thin fabric gloves underneath for winter. LLBean 3-in-1 coat and Columbia puffer jacket (for dry days).

Kids OAKI One-Piece Trail Rain Suit https://g.co/kgs/H5jTQR

@pachamama: I’m not sure of really any brands that would hold up to the abuse of outdoor preschool and get handed down. I had a hard time finding clothes that would hold up to indoor preschool! Maybe something like carhart? Do you have a Farm & Fleet or a Fleet Farm near you? I’d check out to see what the farm/ranch kids are wearing.

I wonder if you could get a few basics from LL Bean or Lands End (we love their outerwear). On the much less expensive side of the spectrum, so far this school year we have had decent luck with Children's Place (they do have annoying graphics but some decent basic solids as well). But honestly, even if they are fairly durable, they always get some random stain at school from food or crafts that is no match for a Tide Pen... so far LO2 has like zero shot at getting any good hand-me-downs!
