@mamimami: I'm sure it will help! My son refused to even attempt to hold a crayon before OT. He would tell me he couldn't do it and would ask me to draw/write for him. He's no Picasso (yet :silly: ) but he will at least try most of the time. And all the sudden, he's trying to write letters.

@ValentineMommy: Yeah I know you are right! I really hope it helps his fine motor skills because he definitely notices his art and writing as not "as good" as his peers'.

@Mrs. Lion: He doesn't. He likes trampolines. Go figure. He is kind of a klutz though.

We just "graduated" out of OT for similar things. My son is 3.5.

He was slightly behind with fine motor and has sensory issues. He LOVED OT....like really loved it. Heavy play is something they stressed as really important for him. Before we started, he was terrified of swings (and now has no problem with them). His fine motor has greatly improved too.

He didn't really have an official diagnosis, but I will say, I think OT is great...for anyone really. It can't hurt!

@mamimami: Yeah, proprioception isn't really something most people know about. Everybody knows about the other senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, sound) but proprioception isn't really taught in school. I would definitely say the dance can't hurt and might help. It's not therapy, but does many of the same things. Dance is all about learning how to control and move and be aware of your body. I was in dance classes from the age of 5 through grad school and think it has been immensely helpful for me. Plus it's a great builder for any sort of physical activity or sport.

@mamimami: does he avoid specific activities where he might feel out of control? Like jumping on a trampoline or swinging? My son is incredibly physical and active, but she said that he might have something going on because he avoids things like that.

Hopefully they can give you more information!

@JenGirl: oh that is really interesting! I have him in jazz now so I guess I was inadvertently doing something right, although maybe ballet would be better for control and whatnot. I had beer even heard of propioception before yesterday!

Not with my kid, but I've got a common genetic condition that makes me prone to poor proprioception. It's why I'm flexible and so clumsy. So if this had been around when I was younger, I would have probably qualified. As it was, my pediatrician told my mom to start me in dance classes, which she did, and which actually teaches many of the same skills.

@Mrs. Lion: thanks for answering! I did find some "heavy work" info online. I am still really confused about the diagnosis because it doesn't seem to fit too well with what I have read. Like, he doesn't seem to either avoid movement or be obsessed with movement. But I'm trying to give it a chance! Can't hurt I suppose. Probably I am also reluctant to admit something is "wrong" with my kid!

We are doing this now with my 3 year old. His issue is actually sensory modulation, which basically is regulating between super active and out of control and then super focused. There is also some proprioceptive/vestibular stuff going on.

We are going to an OT with a sensory gym and it is really fun! Huge pillows everywhere, an indoor swing and slide. Scooters, trampolines. He really loves going!

Heavy work is something they have recommended for at home. I actually wrote a post about heavy work last year, and a quick google search might find some more activities that your little guy might enjoy! The heavy work makes a huge difference for my lo.

Hi all! I haven't posted in awhile but I was wondering if anyone's has been recommended for occupational (?) therapy for vestibular and/or proprioceptive issues.

My son's teacher recommended he be tested and although no disability was diagnosed, they recommended he have a course of therapy for these two areas of weakness.

He is 5 and as far as I can tell totally awesome and "normal" -- the only things I have noticed he's not that good at (compared to his classmates) are fine motor things like drawing and writing letters.
