ours is 2 floors, 1600 sq feet. i can't hear olive unless she's crying really loud, so a monitor is necessary.

it's not about hearing them so much as seeing what they're doing that's important to me. for instance twice last week olive wasn't falling asleep for her nap -- it was because she pooped! but i wouldn't have known that if i wasn't watching her on the video monitor.

How is it anyone's business as to what monitor you want and why?! If they don't want to get it off the registry: they don't have to:))))
Our house is pretty large but I'm getting on only because I don't have anywhere to put it where it'll see the baby. If we did have a space to put the camera I def would!

Our place is small, but two floors (2 bedrooms). I couldn't live without our video monitor... partially b/c I'm a huge worrier. I love that I can always see baby, even when she's asleep upstairs, and I'm downstairs cooking. I am so neurotic in fact, that the first few weeks of DD's life I slept with the video monitor in bed with me... even though DD was in her pack n play just inches from my head. I could look at the video monitor and see that she was still breathing, without having to sit up or turn a light on. So yes, a video monitor is a necessity for me!!

I don't think home size matters when deciding on buying a video monitor. Even if my home was 700 sq ft I'd STILL buy one! It's one of those things that you dont' realize you need until you actually have one. It's probably on my list of top 3 things I NEED for baby and toddler!

I think you should get one no matter what just to save yourself from going into the nursery unnecessarily and then waking the baby up/wasting your time.

I think a video monitor is totally worth it, regardless of how big/small your house is.

It's great to be able to see what she is up to when we are watching tv, or making/having dinner. It's also nice to be able to see what the noise she is making really is - LO laughs A LOT in her sleep and is constantly making noise. She also cries in her sleep, so it's so nice to be able to see if she is actually awake and in need of something, or just dreaming and making lots of noise. :)

Eh, if you need that peace of mind don't worry what people will say - it's about you and your baby, not other people's opinions.

We weren't going to get one originally, but within the first month I was running into his room every ten minutes just to check on him. So we sprung for one and I'm so happy we did. I love being able to see him sleeping at any moment.

Our house is 1500 sq ft, it's a two-level town house. His bedroom is right next to ours, but from downstairs in the kitchen/LR I can't hear him if he cries. And many times he doesn't even wake up crying, he waits in his bed quietly. So if I wasn't able to see him awake, he would then start crying from being left alone too long- I like to avoid that!

My mom would tell you a video monitor is the best invention EVER and she totally wishes they were around when I was a baby. I was pretty happy and would go into my crib easily and quitely. But if she went in to check on me and I happen to still be awake she had to dive on the floor and hide because if I saw her I would want to get out and play. She would have LOVED to be able to see me without me seeing her. Having a super small house wouldn't solve that issue : )

Our house is about 2,000 sq feet, and LO sleeps upstairs so we needed a monitor. Even if I had a smaller place, though, I think I'd like to have a video monitor... it's nice to be able to check to make sure the baby is OK without going into the room and risking waking them up. LO just started rolling over and I'm always worried that she'll get have her face flat in the mattress or something.

I figured that I wouldn't need a monitor since my house isn't too big, and my LO's room is across from ours. While I was right about not needing an audio monitor, I regret not purchasing a video monitor. Unless you can see through walls, nothing can replace the value of seeing your LO on a monitor screen to check up on him/her.

also, when they're older you can see if they're climbing out of their crib ;)
DS is 7 months old and I can see him wake up, sit up and play with his toys, it's pretty cute

Ours is 1200 sq ft, but having the monitor allows us to watch tv at a normal volume or do dishes without straining to hear her.

I can't wait to see what people say. I don't know if I can justify buying one either, our home is 1200 sq feet, and LO's room is right across the hall from ours. A friend did say to me it was a great investment, because even though their home is small, if they were outside in the yard, kitchen, where ever, it was peace of mind for her instead of running in the house every 5 minutes.

we live in a one bedroom apartment and LO's crib is in our room. I wasnt going to buy a video monitor but we received it as a gift and I use it so much I dont know how I would have survived without it. Regardless of how big/small your home is a video monitor makes it easy for you to be in a different room from your LO and still check on them on the screen and talk to them using the mic

our place is tiny - maybe 700-800 sf? It's a townhouse though, so we have a video monitor so I can go downstairs and make dinner/watch tv and watch LO in his crib.

Our place is pretty small, one level, two bedrooms. LO's bedroom is next to ours, although the crib won't be on the shared wall. I would like to have a video monitor so we can see why LO is fussing instead of running in there every time we hear a noise. On the other hand, I can imagine lots of judgment from family of why we need a video monitor in such a small place.

How big is your living space? Does a small space still justify a video monitor?
