Yep - I'm in the camp that I'm going to obsess anyway, so I want the features of a video monitor~

@sorrycharlie: This is probably the situation that will tempt me. I could definitely see the value in it once he starts hitting the crib acrobatics stage.

We had just an audio monitor until LO was 9 months old and then we got a video one and OMG, how did I live without it???? We didn't obsess but it actually HELPED us sleep better. With the audio one, I would jerk awake at every noise I heard! But with the video monitor, I could see that she was just rolling over and finding her comfy spot (etc.) and that it was all good. I TOTALLY recommend getting a video monitor.

Glad you're going with the video monitor, we started with the audio thinking that we have such a tiny house and LO is right across the hall, it would be silly to spend the money on the video one. But when she got bigger she started moving around a lot and she would pull down her breathable bumper and her limbs would get stuck in her crib, so she would freak out. And I didn't know if she was crying because of this or she was just upset for another reason, and if I went in to check on her and she wasn't stuck and I left she would freak out, so nap time started to get really rough. And then bed time started to get rough because I couldn't sleep because I would freak out thinking she'd get her arm stuck in her crib and I wouldn't know it. So yes, I sleep much better with the video monitor.

Ok you've all convinced me we made the right decision. We'll keep it off most of the time unless baby's really fussing and turn it on just to check on her without having to get up and really disturb her. Thanks, ladies! You guys are so helpful!

I first bought a pricey AngelCare monitor (no video) because I thought, as a FTM, I wanted the reassurance of the under the mattress pad to detect if LO was breathing.. oh how I laugh at myself now! I never once used it because I kept DS in the bassinet next to my bed until he was 4 months old. (That helped with nursing in the middle of the night!)
I then purchased a video monitor and it's GREAT! I wish I got this one as my only monitor. I can keep an eye on him when I'm cooking, cleaning, etc. And now that he's standing I can see what he's up to in there, if he's trying to escape, etc..

@highwire: lol my thoughts exactly.

LO isn't here yet but my nanny-LO has a video monitor. They bought it after she escaped her crib and it was SO worth it. I definitely watched it a lot but more out of entertainment! you can see what they're doing when they think no one is watching - particularly the realistic sounding fake cry when they're absolutely fine! it was much easier to get her to sleep because we could ignore the dramatics and only respond if there was an emergency, not when she was grinning and fake crying at the same time :P

LOVE LOVE LOVE our video monitor. I don't watch my baby sleep with it on, I watch the baby cry (like during sleep training) to make sure something isn't totally wrong. And now that my oldest is in a "big kid bed" we can see when she is playing and quiet vs when she is sleeping and quiet.

We didnt think we needed a video monitor but it is so useful. I can be in the kitchen and still see her. its much better than an audio because with I can actually see if she is stuck or if something is wrong. people do fine without a video monitor but its a great thing to have

I turn off the screen unless he's fussing and I'm trying to figure out whether he's ok and just resettling, or whether he's up for good. Typically, if he's lying down, he'll go back to sleep; once he sits up, he's not going back down. If I didn't have the video monitor, I'd end up going in all the time and getting him when I didn't really need to.

I LOVE our video monitor, and we dont obsess over it either. When she is making noise, be it a squawk, squeak, sleep giggle, whimper, cry, roll over, etc, its good to be able to turn it on and see what shes doing in there. We recently went on vacation and I forgot to grab the camera, but I did have our Angelcare packed. So we made it the week with an audio monitor and I hated it. We survived, but I like being able to glance and see what is happening in there.

I have resisted the video monitor because I don't want to sit and watch it unnecessarily when I could be using my "me" time more productively! Audio-only has been totally fine.

The video is good if you are going to sleep train, you can see what they're doing in their crib and judge if you need to go in or not. Otherwise, an audio is fine for naps if you're in another part of the house.

The video monitor has been essential to me getting a good nights sleep actually. When LO was sleeping in our room I woke up every time he stirred and hardly got any sleep. I was afraid to move him to his crib when he was too little though. With the video monitor I can peek in on him anytime to make sure he's fine without disturbing him, and his little night time movements don't disturb me. It's meant better sleep for both of us.

Hubs and I started our registries on Saturday, and we registered for a video monitor because one of my very close friends strongly recommended it. However, a few of Hubs's friends told him "Don't get a video monitor - you'll obsess over it and not get any sleep anyway!" I told him that we could turn the video off at night, but I know me and I worry that I will start to obsess over watching the baby. Do you think a video monitor is really worth the extra money? Were you able to turn it off and not obsess?

Also, my mom has said several times that she thinks video monitors are ridiculous. "We did it without being able to constantly see you...."
