@mrsbubbletea: I don't leave them in for too long, but I've used the same sets for the 4th year now so I feel like they just. smell...

@SweetiePie: I switched to dryer balls a while ago and now use my old dryer sheets as bug repellent lol!

@kes18: Oh and I also don't use dryer sheets or softeners, I just have let them sit a bit too long too many times in the washer and so after one use they smell a bit stinky!

@kes18: That must have been where I had the seed of doubt planted in my mind! On a quick google, I saw vinegar ok'd on the samsung website, but I didnt actually click the link... oh well I already did it.

Interesting. Fluff love and cloth diaper science (or their cleaning group) says vinegar is a no-no in the washing machine. Bad for the machine, I think it can eat at the rubber hoses and seals. Although it would probably take a lot of use I'm guessing. Vinegar might void some warranties, so maybe check those. I don't use fabric softener (at all) so have never needed to strip my towels. But I'd probably do it the same way I strip diapers.

@mrsbubbletea: @snowjewelz: I've done it at home multiple times. We are at a beach rental for a month and when we arrived the towels were mildewy smelling. I think someone left them in the washer for too long. So I did the vinegar and baking soda and they are like new.

ETA: I've read that you shouldn't use dryer sheets with towels so I stopped doing that at home. I use the dryer balls instead just for towels.

Okay I am so doing this right now! Do you all wash on a regular cycle with detergent after washing with the vinegar and baking soda cycles?

I just threw a load of towels in with vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. It really is magical. I do it with every load of towels (and anything else I think smells musty).

@snowjewelz: yes! I have left mine in the wash a few too many times

@SweetiePie: awesome I read that and was nervous the baking soda was bad for the washer or something. Just being paranoid. I wish the hottest cycle was... hotter!

I left my clothes in the washer and totally forgot about for days (mom fail). Of course it smelled awful so I washed it again with laundry detergent and vinegar and the smell completely went away!

Yes! I just stripped towels this week and it's magical.
1) run on hottest cycle with 1 cup white vinegar.
2) immediately after run on hottest cycle with 1/2 cup baking soda
3) run on hottest cycle and regular detergent.

It's amazing.

@mrsbubbletea: I think so! I buy 2 gallons at a time from Sam's Club and always put vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser rather than fabric softener when washing towels. I also put either baking soda or vinegar (not both) in with the towels themselves.

I haven't used it to strip towels, but I've used it to clean out my washing machine. It was fine- I just ran a cycle without anything it it before I ran it again with clothes.
