We went on the cruise last year and it was awesome. Definitely definitely take the boat ride to the glaciers. I'd suggest Glacier Bay National Park if you can. Also, make sure to plan your routes carefully, its hard to get around Alaska by car. I liked the cities of Ketchikan and Skagway. If you get to Skagway, take the train up into the Yukon, its an amazing view.

@jaypegs: Cool. Thanks for the tips. I wish I was going there in the winter so I can see real sled dogs. Do they do it in the summer?

Well, we booked our flights and the car rental. We are going September 21st to the 24th! Now I just need to pick a bunch of hotels or one central one. DH wants to see wild life especially bears. I want to see Glaciers.

I lived in Alaska for 7 years, but mostly out in the boonies! Homer is fun though, with the Sealife center, an easily accessible glacier, and Ididaride, where you can go on a cart pulled by sled dogs owned by one of the racers and snuggle puppies. My mom gifted DH and I a weekend doing all of it when we graduated college before we got married. North of Anchorage there is the reindeer and musk ox farm. You could drive out to Aleyska and take the tram up, and stop at the gold panning place in Indian Valley on the way. I'd highly recommend the Alaska Native Heritage Center if you're into museums, and my mom liked the art museum a lot (I work at one now, but never went when I was in AK!). For food, I would recommend Moose's Tooth pizza, Snow City Cafe for breakfast, and Glacier brew house (on weekends, sometimes it's easier to sit at the bar)

Have fun!

@locavore_mama: The 24 hours of true sunlight only happens above the Arctic Circle, but closer to the summer solstice, it pretty much only gets to twilight for a few hours in the early morning, though the sun does set. Winter is your best bet for the northern lights - it doesn't get dark enough in the summer.

@mrsbookworm: thanks! I'm checking there now.

@locavore_mama: I don't know when all the daylight is but I think it depends on when you go. I think the longest days are in June, with about 19 hours of daylight. When we go in Sept, it will be just 12 hours of daylight. If we go in December, there's only about 5 hours of daylight.

@StbHisMrs: Oh, never been claming before. I do love clams. I'll check those places out. Thanks for the Italian restaurant rec! I love Italian!

@Espion: Thanks! I'll check it out.

I wish I've lived here long enough to be of any help, but we've only been here since mid-July. (Writes down @StbHisMrs: suggestions...)

If you go to Palmer or Wasilla, take the Old Glen Highway route (short detour). So beautiful!

And Villa Nova is a must for an Itslian dinner in
Anchorage

All of these are within driving distance frim Anchorage

I've only been to southern Alaska, so I'm no help, but I'm sure you'll have a great time! I loved Alaska and can't wait to go back and see more of it. Trip Advisor has forums that sometimes can be helpful..

We are trying to plan a weekend trip to Alaska. I don't have much vacation so I'm trying to do it in one weekend and take a Monday off. (I know it's not a ton of time but it will be great to say I've been to Alaska. I wish I had a ton of vacation to do an Alaska crusie, but I don't.)

I'm in Seattle so going to Anchorage, AK would be a 3.5 hour flight. Not bad!

I want to go on a half day boat trip to see the glaciers. Maybe in Seward?

Oh, tentative date would be September 20-23.

Any tips?
