I had a natural birth with a midwife, and she suggested we get it when we were discussing what would happen directly after the birth. We did skip the eye ointment since I don't have the std it protects against and am in a monogomous relationship with no way to catch it before birth (my midwifes words).

It's standard practice to give it here in Australia as well. Of course it was a bit traumatic to watch them jab LO right after birth as she screamed her head off, but it was well worth it for the peace of mind! We'll give it to future babies as well without hesitation.

Even a good portion of the natural birth community supports the vitamin K injection. The risk of not getting it greatly out weighs the fact the baby gets a shot, and there aren't many down sides to it.

ETA: There is also an oral dose. It isn't as effect so it requires a second dose.

It was standard procedure here in Sweden and they don't do many extras at all.

I'm pretty sure it's mandatory in NYState to get the shot (and the eyedrops). I think you have to go through many hoops to get exempt from it (or have a home birth) with a lenient midwife.

Never heard of this. Is it possible that we didn't have the option? I may have just said yes because I was so drugged up after the csection. Not sure

We opted out of that both times just because we didn't feel it was necessary. Our midwife was very supportive of our decision but the pediatrition at the hospital was obnoxious rude about it... He started out by explaining the possible issues that could come about and that was absolutely fine, I knew he was just doing his job but he decided to also go on and on about how we were killing our baby and if our baby dies its all on us. Then he proceeded to bad mouth midwifes before dh finally had enough and told him he needed to respect our decision and leave.

@Arden: HA! Okay. I don't know if my LO got a shot at the hospital, but it's standard procedure for them to put drops or ointment the eyes so we just okay'd it.

@chopsuey119: I'm pretty sure that the Vitamin K is a shot.
They do use an eyedrop medication at birth as well, in case the mother has a particular STD that could make the child blind.

I definitely wanted Sawyer to receive it at birth, and he did. My hospital doesn't offer oral drops, nor would I have gone that direction if they had. The onset of action of the injection is quicker.

i figure they wouldn't give it if it didn't have more benefits than possible side effects. if all doctor's recommend it, there's probably a good reason.

"Bleeding in infants due to vitamin K deficiency can be severe, leading to hospitalizations, blood transfusions, brain damage and death. "

We gave our LO the shot. Well... DH said yes. I was not conscious.

We were given many options. I didn't want the shot because there were additionaly ingredients in it that I didn't want LO to be exposed to as a NB so I opted for the vit. k oral drops. But I know not all hospitals offer that.

If I remember correctly, I think vitamin k drops are put in the eyes? We had it done for our Lo. I asked about it when I was pregnant and got a good answer as to why they do it. I've forgotten why though...

Hey all --- just wondering about your thoughts on the vitamin K shot given to infants at the hospital right after they are born.

I'm just starting to get all of the info from my hospital and there are a few things I had no idea happened - like this.

Just wondering if any of you turned this down or think its a definite yes - must have.

Thx!
