My son has oral allergy syndrome, but pineapple is what we noticed the issue with. It never caused him to throw up, more causes issues with his mouth. It's also only fresh, not cooked. It might sound weird, but if you zap it, grill it, etc try giving it to LO again and see if that causes a reaction. I was always told growing up to not mix melon and milk as it causes tummy upset, so maybe it's just the combo for your LO.

Agree with previous posters to follow up with the allergist. And keep following up if they can't figure it out. My son did this with wheat for a year but tested negative on the skin testing...until one day he finally ate enough wheat at one time (pizza) to cause a full blown severe reaction which required an epi pen and all of the sudden it showed up clearly on skin and blood tests. Allergies are so weird and complicated.

I would look into allergy testing. It's not totally accurate this young but can be helpful. Usually vomiting (or anaphylaxis) occurs within an hour of ingestion, maybe a bit more. Maybe he has more of a gut-based intolerance vs a true allergy? Either way, I'd avoid it for now and pursue an allergist for next steps.

That sounds like how my daughter reacts to her food allergies. She's only ever vomited from her allergies, and usually within an hour or 2 after eating them. We went to allergist for confirmation, and also carry Epi-pens just in case.

@DesertDreams88: I don't know if you want to experiment with your son, but you could try giving him some melon and limiting his milk at that time and see if he still has a reaction. Maybe it's some weird combo of the two in his stomach that's bothering him. If he reacts again though, I'd ask for a referral to an allergist to get the allergy confirmed.

@Adira: yeah, he drinks milk at least 2x daily and doesn't have any reaction.

interesting link, I'll pass it along to DH! He is allergic to a long list.

Does your DH and in-laws have seasonal allergies? It's possible they have oral allergy syndrome instead of an actual allergy.

https://www.aaaai.org/conditions-and-treatments/library/allergy-library/outdoor-allergies-and-food-allergies-can-be-relate

As for your LO, throwing up can definitely be a sign of an allergy, though not necessarily. I'm guessing your LO has been drinking milk regularly and is otherwise fine with milk (milk is a very common allergen)? You could look into a referral to an allergist to get the melon allergy confirmed.

DH and FIL have melon allergies, it makes their mouth itchy and swell, I don't know if it's to the point of anaphylaxis because they don't eat it. MIL also is allergic to melons, but it causes just a mildly itchy mouth (as of now), she sometimes eats melon but just drinks a ton of water / soda with it (*eye roll*).

LO LOVES melons. When we initially tried them out, he did fine (like, Oct/Nov). In Dec/Jan, he went through a period of lots of diaper rash, and we determined it was the acidity of melon and citrus fruits - he had been eating a LOT of those, like at least 1 serving daily. He threw up here and there, but seemingly no pattern, we thought he had a hard time figuring out when to stop eating or he had a sensitive gag reflex as we were introducing much more solid foods.

He ate melon off and on for the past 6 months and we didn't notice anything. He is now 19 months. He eats melon about 1-3x a week, moreso this past summer bc it was in season.

The last 3-4 times he has eaten melons in the past month, he has thrown up. 2-3 of those times were within an hour of eating it, on Sunday night it was 8 hours after eating - it was in the middle of the night after 15 minutes of mild crying. Each of these times were also associated with recently drinking milk. I think milk + melon is yucky but he loves both.

Does this sound like a food allergy or am I seeing a connection where there isn't one?
