DD is almost 5 months old and we've never purchased an item of clothing for her so far. She has a stocked wardrobe through 12 months from her grandmas' gifts, hand-me-downs from our parent friends, and our local Buy-Nothing group. As she gets older I plan to keep using those sources and get stuff from Goodwill as needed. I don't see purchasing new clothing for her until she's at least in elementary school.

I have 2 kids of opposite sex. I usually buy big hauls of clothes twice a year and things here and there. I only buy on sale and can usually find pretty good deals at Carter's, Old Navy, Gap & Kohl's. If I were to budget monthly, it would come out to be about $50-$75 per month. Which seems like a lot! yikes. But I admit to buying a bit more than each kid actually needs and especially for my DD. I cannot resist girl clothes!

I have better luck at consignment swap sales than at resale shops for the cute stuff - and still super cheap.

Mostly, my MIL is obsessed with sales, so most of DD's clothes are bought for $4 or less during sales.

My LOs aren't here yet and with how expensive twin gear is, I have been trying to stock up on used clothes from fellow twin and singleton moms. I was looking at Target recently and they had a ton of summer clothes on clearance for 50% off. I picked up a bunch of things and was thinking to myself why does anyone buy full retail for kids clothing when things are always on sale or clearance. Plus, consignment sales. Granted I understand needing to buy full price if you really need something. I did side eye DH when he purchased a $24 onesie. I told him that $24 on a onsie is really expensive but that maybe we can try to resell it on ebay. It was a onesie with logo that DH loves.

Anyway, a great thread with lots of good tips on where to shop and get good deals, if I need something.

@lovehoneybee: I'd never used Swap.com, but just checked it out and got D some winter pjs and a 2-in-1 winter coat for $21! Thanks!

With regards to the original question, I don't have a budget, per se. I typically buy seasonally for D, and kind of buy based on need for myself. I buy everything either on consignment (local sales and/or shops or online) or on sale. The only time I pay full price for things is when I'm purchasing from an IG shop - those mompreneurs deserve it!

I just went through my YNAB clothing category, and since January I've spent $400 on clothing - for me, D, and Babygirl due in February. D's pretty well set now for the winter, and I'm set for the rest of my pregnancy. I might buy him another shirt here or there, but I think for the 2 of us, we're pretty much done for the year. Babygirl needs a few more sleepers and onesies, but there's a HUGE consignment sale in a couple of weeks, so I'll stock up then. So, all told, MAYBE $500 for the year? That averages about $125/season for 2.5 of us.

I only buy sales! But the clothes I buy her are more practical than stylish (daycare stuff). My mom on the other hand, is her supplier of princess dresses, frills, bags, and accessories.

Preschool has a long list of clothes they want the kids to have in their cubbies and even with sales, it's crazy expensive. Plus we need things in multiples (outwear for instance).

My dad buys way more clothes than they could ever wear BUT.... I'm a mom of girls and still get them things because I want to. I end up having to buy more of the basic stuff because they can only wear party dresses so often.
I spend more on stuff for #1 note because I know for sure two little sister will be wearing it down the line. And I splurge on cold weather gear because we're in Canada.

We don't even have a budget-that's how little I shop for her! We're very lucky to have lots of nice hand me downs. Some are also ugly or not my style, but I don't care enough about fashion to buy other clothes that will only fit for a short while anyway.

I also buy a lot of Baby Gap never full-price. I never buy anything at less than a 40% discount. A few weeks ago they had a really big sale and 40% off entire purchase. I got DD1 a bunch of dresses for school at $9-$11 each and DD2 a bunch of adorable bubbles for $4-$6.

I never buy used, I'm not a digger, so I'd never dig through that stuff.

The only things I usually pay a lot for, not on sale, are smocked dresses. I usually pay $35+ for each and then I get the baby the matching one, so I drop $70 sometimes for them to have smocked matching dresses.

I honestly don't have a budget per se I just try to get good deals when I can, always buy on sale.

ETA: I fully admit that my kids have WAY too many clothes and they are all nice, and it may be silly but I love dressing them really cute and I adore matching them!

I don't have a budget, but I just buy things as they need them. Every once in a while I will take "inventory" and remove everything from the drawers that no longer fits, and then I have a mental idea of the things they need. I try to buy cheap clothes--I've found my best deals at Gymboree. They usually have an extra amount off of clearance and then I combine it with a 15% coupon. I will rarely splurge on items, only if it's something I love or for something very special.

I do like to buy nicer/non-cheap shoes for them, especially since they'll go through 3 girls before they're retired!

Honestly my kids have way too many clothes. But I like options. I agree with buying gap on sale. It's always on sale. We don't budget for clothes. When it's a new season we buy more, when they need more we buy more, when they outgrow them we buy more, or if there's an event we buy more. No shame!

We don't really budget for her clothing, but since I usually buy the majority of her clothing at gap, it isn't too bad with all the sales they have. They literally have 40% off at least 1x a week. I figure I definitely shop way less for myself now that I am at sahm and live in workout attire so she can have my clothing budget! I do splurge occasionally on pieces that are really special. I love dressing her.

I wait for the big sales and buy things "larger" so he gets a lot of use out of them... Like his rain coat is a 3T (he's two) and he's had it for 4ish months? It's long and the sleeves are rolled up but he'll get another year out of it! That doesn't work when they are itty bitty but is easier now :) I buy a lot of 3T shirts and pants for winter in the hopes he can also wear them next fall.

I also wait for the big sales like childrens place 50% off everything and carter's better sales to buy a lot of staples. I probably spend about $100 at those sales and get a good variety.

It also helps that grandma likes to shop :)

I don't have a monthly budget, but I spend about $150 twice a year at Janie and Jack during their big sales and the rest comes from Children's Place or Gap/Old Navy as needed. I probably spend about $200-300 per season at those stores. I don't buy used only because it takes more time/effort and I work full time, but if I was a SAHM that would be different!

I buy everything on sale and usually deeply discounted. Target isn't cheap enough for me sometimes. :silly: I tend to buy from the Gap, Crewcuts, Carter's from Costco, and the Hellobee classifieds. I've learned to stock up in the next size up since my kids are toddlers who grow at a snail's pace. I will spend more on quality shoes and jackets (ex. Patagonia down sweater), but again I buy them at a discounted price. I have two boys, and LO2 wears a lot of hand me downs.

I wouldn't say E is the best-dressed...he's rough on clothes, and wears a lot of basics to daycare, but I get a lot of clothes from swap.com. Pretty much everything I've gotten for him has been gently used, and they sell the nicer brands at a fraction of the store price (I also get a lot of maternity clothes from here). And you can pay through Amazon or Paypal, which I like.

@Truth Bombs: I did the same thing, we were team green though, so when I was in the hospital, we placed a huge order from Ralph Lauren Baby and Janie and Jack. The first 2 years, my son was well dressed.

Now I don't care as much, because he wrecks his clothes, lol. I buy my son graphic tees and some of them have writing on them, but they're not those ones that say "my parents need a date night" and that kind of stuff.

Like others, I stock up at the gap, Carter's and old navy sales. I buy at the end of the season for the following year. It has worked well for us so far. I find I buy way more for DD than I do for myself now.

Most of LO's stuff comes from the Gap, Old Navy, and Carter's outlet near my house. It's so easy to buy clothes for her and everything is reasonably inexpensive. I tried a local kid's consignment shop after being sold on it and it was awful. Everything was aged and in poor condition. I rarely find good thrift shops here so I'm not surprised. Wish I lived in an area where buy second hand was popular!
