@Bibliolove: I was hoping for more on social issues too. In my dream scenario, Kaine would have hit Pence more about his "caring about you in the womb" comment and asked about support for children once they exit the womb - - education cuts, SNAP benefit cuts, lack of support for universal/state/federal children's healthcare, etc.

Don't get pulled down into "partial birth abortion" and fights that don't sway people. Talk about the issues no one talks about when they talk about "caring about life"

I wanted more on social issues. Curious to hear from Indiana people about Pence. He's extremely conservative and a Tea Partyer. Check out the periods for pence campaign from last spring.

Kaine lacked style, but speaks for my political views.

@lawbee11: I read an article about the first televised debate between Kennedy and Nixon. Nixon refused to wear makeup, Kennedy did and he understood the importance of public speaking and his appearance on the new medium. Nixon was convinced it didn't matter.

People who watched the debate on TV said that Kennedy won, while people who listened on the radio said that Nixon won.

I can't believe "debates" in this country have reached this point. I didn't think Kaine did great but at least I thought that other people who see how much Pence was lying and denying when it was just so, so obvious. It made me so frustrated this morning to see that the polls show that Pence won the debate.

@NCSUchick27: That was the highlight of the debate for me, too. I had very mixed feelings about Kaine as a running mate given his views on abortion. But I thought he nailed that topic last night. "Why don't you trust women?" to Pence....priceless.

@MrsSCB: Yes...and since when did direct quotes become insults?

This accurately describes my feelings on the debate:

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/10/mike_pence_won_because_he_was_shameless_about_denying_reality.html

"By that standard, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence won the vice presidential debate with Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, full stop. Pence, who worked in conservative talk radio before moving to electoral politics, was calm, smooth, and steady. He was an effective advocate for conservative ideology, a polished voice for lower taxes, less redistribution, a more aggressive posture on the global stage (against Russia especially), and new restrictions on abortion. Against Kaine—who interrupted, cross-talked, and spoke in a rapid, hurried clip—Pence looked commanding, almost presidential. And on Twitter, pundits and observers began immediate speculation about the vice presidential nominee’s prospects for 2020, should Donald Trump lose the election for president.

But politics isn’t pure theater, and we shouldn’t use that standard. Who performed better is less important than whether the candidates were honest and truthful. Whether Kaine or Pence was polished and polite matters less than whether they gave a fair and good-faith accounting of themselves and their politics to the public. And by that standard, Mike Pence was a clear and abysmal failure."

The interruptions were driving me CRAZY! DH and I are huge Kaine supporters (we are both Dems from Virginia and I even interned for Kaine in college), but we were both yelling at the TV "Shut up Tim!". Kaine definitely won on policy points, but I have to admit Pence won on style points for staying calm. I wish the moderator had been able to turn off their microphones so each of them had a full two minutes to talk! The few questions that were answered in full without interruption were so interesting, like about the influence of faith on their political leanings. Argh. Sad that this was the only VP debate and it was so, so bad.

I think Mike Pence did a good job as far as appearance and demeanor go, but he flat out lied or ignored the question on many things. He denied things the we KNOW and have record of Donald Trump saying.

Tim Kaine appeared to be too aggressive and intense. His constant interruptions were very annoying, and I was having trouble understanding a lot of what was said. He should have dialed it back a bit. I also think he should have brought up Pence's extremely conservative stances on LGBTQ rights and abortion.

I thought Tim Kaine excelled in the exchange about abortion at the end. He spoke about his faith and personal moral convictions, but said that the government should trust women to make that decision on their own, which I think a lot of people will identify with. Just because you personally don't agree with abortion doesn't mean that it should be outlawed and the choice taken away from all women.

We turned it off after the first half hour. Kaine was too distracting with his interruptions and Pence was just irritating with his phony voice and not answering the questions. Neither of them came off authentic and I was really hoping to get a sense of both men.

@ocean81: Pence won because he stayed calm and didnt take the bait. Although I read that Trump may have wantee him to defend him and double down on things he's said or proposed.

Pence literally said Trump didnt say certain things the way Kaine described. He's on video and we know the context. :bummed:

Pence has a soothing voice. Kaine didnt look at the camera. Pence has better hair, Kaine looks like he forgot to brush and tame a few locks.

But Kaine had much better points and while Pence at surface seemed calmly polished in his denial of things Trump said I don't think those sound bites will play well in the news tomorrow. And while Pence saying that Trump is not a polished politician might be an attempted dig at establishment, I can't imagine that as a good defence as someone who's running for a position to play politics with the world - Trumps own VP basically called him unqualified.

And although I agree with all his points, I wish he'd take a cue from Hilz and show some restraint. Pence is calm but keeps saying Trump hasn't said all the hundreds of ridiculous things we've all seen Trump saying/twittering. So I have no patience for him, either.

Who's watching? All the interrupting is driving me crazy and I can't understand half of what they're saying when they do it. Hate to say it, but I think that Mike Pence is doing a fabulous job, even though I don't agree with any of his policy positions. He's not going to swing my vote, but he is definitely coming across as calm and measured, which is what Trump's campaign needs. I think Kaine is getting rattled and knows Pence is presenting himself well.
