I've used both and been satisfied/happy with both. One thing about Air Bnb that I found was that everything needed to be paid up front. That was not the case with VRBO. I enjoy using the Air Bnb site more.

We just did a rental for this summer and flipped between both Airbnb and Vrbo.... Airbnb had a $300 fee which we didn't realize, whereas the other did not and stated all fees more clearly!

I stayed in Paris using ParisAddress, but that was before airbnb and vrbo. We stayed in the 6th (saint germain).

I have used vrbo once and had a great experience.

@regberadaisy: That is gorgeous! And so cheap compared to most of what I've been looking at! They have a four night minimum stay and we were only going to stay for three nights, but I suppose we could make ourselves stay an extra night if need be! Thanks for the link! :-)

We never tried VRBO but I tried Airbnb for our recent trip home. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our reservation halfway through our trip because DH's asthma was getting bad with all the dog hair the house had. We knew we were renting a house with dogs (the dogs weren't there when we were staying there) and we thought since we are dog owners ourselves it would be okay. This isn't a fault of the homeowners, just something we have to deal with personally because of DH's asthma. We are grateful that the owners worked with us and allowed us to modify our reservation so we were able to get our money back on days we cancelled.

DH complained that the house was not super clean like cleaning lady clean (maybe could have been vacuumed and some of the pet hair removed, but it was clean when we got there.) I did tell him that we were renting a house that someone lived in. I don't know if renting a house that is always a rental would have been as clean... maybe it would be, but maybe not. I think his asthma is just really sensitive and bad right now.

He could argue that staying at a hotel would have been a little cleaner because they clean the rooms daily, but we were paying for a whole house for the price of a hotel room with a suite. We wanted access to a washer and dryer and kitchen. We were definitely more comfortable staying in a house versus staying in a hotel room. We also didn't have to worry about the twins waking up hotel guests. Next time, we have a big trip like this (stayed 16 days), I'll look into VRBO or look for a home on Airbnb that has no pets.

@Ree723: I finally read some of the other posts. We stayed in a VRBO in montemarte! We loved it but it did have a flight to walk up and then the apt had stairs to get to the bedroom. So not super preggo friendly. But we loved it! Have fun.

I've done VRBO a lot, both U.S. and Europe. I've looked on airbnb but always seem to find better options of VRBO. I also still think of airbnb as the couch surfing place! I think either one can work fine.

@lamariniere: Ooh, thank you! I'm just checking out the 5th, 6th, and 7th now - so many cute places to choose from! My only issue now is finding one that's not a loft - I cannot imagine by 32 week pregnant self is going to want to waddle up a ladder to go to bed every night, or navigate that each of the 400 times I'll be up during the night to use the bathroom, lol!

@regberadaisy: Yes, please!! I love Montmarte and what you just described sounds absolutely perfect! Thank you!

@Ree723: DH and I stayed at a beautiful litte apartment in Montmartre! It was right in front of the metro, 2 blocks from Moulin Rouge. It had a little Juliet balcony with a view of the Eiffel Tower. I'll send you the link!

@Ree723: oooh! Fun! I love Montmartre, I used to live there and in the Marais too. The area in and around Canal St. Martin is really cute and trendy. Anything left bank in the 5th, 6th or 7th would also be convenient and magical. Really, anything in central Paris is going to be lovely.

@lamariniere: We're going to Paris in April for a babymoon, just DH and I. We've both been several times, just never together, so we thought it would be a nice little getaway. I know you know Paris very well (you used to live there, right?) - any recommendations for a cute little neighbourhood outside the major tourist areas but still close enough to either walk or hop on the Metro for a short journey? We were thinking maybe Montmarte/18th arr - thoughts?

@regberadaisy: Ahh, that makes sense to me! The place we stayed in Amsterdam was someone's entire apartment. He was going away for the long weekend and we rented his place for the four days he was gone. I didn't realise VRBO were strictly rentals - thanks for the clarification!

@regberadaisy: Yep. VRBO is strict rental properties. AirBnB is sometimes someone's primary residence that they rent out while they're away. We've only ever used VRBO.

I agree with @lamariniere: regarding VRBO and the cleaning fee. I spent all this time narrowing down places to rent and then the cleaning fee really threw my budget for a loop. But, we went ahead with it and had a great experience.

I've used VRBO multiple times and it was in Europe and Uk. No cleaning fees with any of the places. All the properties are individually owned so I'm sure it depends on the rental.

I believe AirBnB started out as a "couch Surfing" rental site. Now it has morphed into full apartments etc. I think they also provide just rooms in a property someone is also living in. Or sometimes it's actually someone's house they live in!

VRBO, from what I've seen, are strict rental properties (apts, condos, houses, etc).

We've used VRBO once, in Hawaii, and AirBnB in Europe and the US. The thing I found with VRBO was that the cleaning fee was not included in the price when browsing. I was booking a place in OR this summer with VRBO, but when I got midway through the processes the cleaning fee was added and it nearly doubled the price of what I thought we were paying, so I ended up finding something else. In Europe, AirBnB seems to be a good deal, while I didn't find it to be as good of a deal when I've used it in the US, but that might depend on the location.

Where are you going?

What is the difference between them? Anyone used both and can say which one they like better? DH and I have used AirBnB (in Europe) and absolutely loved it - we've sworn we'll never stay in another hotel as it is that awesome, especially if we want to bring the kids along. I keep hearing about VRBO though (mainly from North American friends) and just took a look at their website - it seems to be similar to AirBnB but maybe not as user friendly? Is it more American based or do they have a lot internationally as well?

If you've used both or either one, pros? Cons? Would you use them again? Which is your preference?
