I kept putting TTC off as well, realizing that there really is never an EXCELLENT time in life to have a baby. Especially when you have always focused on your career. It is a whole different way of thinking. The problem arises when you are finally ready to start trying and realize that it is taking even longer then what you had anticipated.... just saying to be cognizant of that! I wish someone would have told me that.

I am sure that this has been said already, but i would quit any form of birth control ASAP. It takes awhile for your body to regulate itself again. I did NOT expect this to happen with the pill.

You and I are alike! :) I have planned out when we want to TTC too based on when I want to give birth and so I can still snowboard while in the first trimester (while it's still safe)! I don't think you are crazy and you should wait until you feel you are ready! :)

My husband told me tonight that every time he sees a baby he wants one. He said, "I must have baby fever!" Don't know how we will wait until next June!

I think you got a lot of good advice. I wouldn't start trying until you're absolutely ready - and wouldn't hold off on trying bc you're shooting for a particular month/season, either. It took us a long time to conceive, and some of my friends who thought it would take a while got pregnant on the first try. You never know.

I understand where you are coming from. With our first, baby fever hit hard and we didnt care when baby would be born, as long as we could have one. We always knew we wanted our children to be close together AND we wanted the next one to be born as early in the year as possible. Well I found out that I would basically be losing my job ( i have a second to fall back on for a few hours). We thought about maybe just waiting until April/May of next year to start trying again so that I could accumulate hours for mat leave. Well that would have given a large gap in age for LO's so we said screw it lets just do it. So now i am expecting in January and will not (probably) get enough hours for mat leave. We just decided that everything else in the world can wait and our family planning can not.

Whatever decision you make will be the best for your family.

I wanted a spring baby too, but it got delayed because even though I started going to the fertility center in plenty of time, they took SO LONG testing us before they finally let me start taking Clomid, then they started me on such a low dose that my cycle was extra long and I had to be bumped up halfway through. So I would definitely err on the side of 'this could take a while' and if you're ready just start trying.

Oh gees... this totally sounds like me! I'm a lawyer and am always worried about how my work and a pregnancy would collide with each other. But can I just say... as a lawyer, something is always going to come up in your job. Trials, wanting to switch firms, etc., So there's never going to be a perfect time. (I try to remind myself this everyday.) But as to your other point... I ABSOLUTELY want a spring baby. I don't want to be so very pregnant during the summer time. I know I can't guarantee anything but its worth a try! Is it worth putting off trying for a whole year if I don't want to try, like, this month? I'm trying to figure that out now!! Best of luck to you, friend. And congrats on your raise and even finding a job! Its tough out there these days!!

I don't think you are crazy.

It sounds like there are other factors at play, not just the season; perhaps waiting a year until you are settled in your career is the best choice (this coming from someone who wanted a fall baby and who has been TTC for 7 months/6 cycles) Go with your gut, but as previous posters have mentioned, don't be *too* disappointed if you don't end up with a spring baby :-)

I *really* want a summer baby but I'm not going to wait to TTC when we're ready in other areas just to have a summer baby. The first time it took us 9 cycles so if we had waited to get the "perfect" season baby we would have been SOL anyway.

Little crazy ;)

We're TTC now and, even when things are "perfectly timed," it doesn't always happen... Also, as an attorney too, I wanted to be comfortable and confident in my position before TTC. Plus, needed to be sure I would qualify for maternity benefits.

First trimester can be really rough depending on your body, so I definitely understand wanting to be 3 months into your role before trying. I got preganant the first night we didn't prevent, so you definitely want to be ready before you pull the goalie.

@dc yoga bee: Right :). I was in the position of being unemployed after a layoff and trying to TTC. I felt like I'd been kinda screwed over because how could I get a job and get pregnant at the same time? Only...that's exactly what happened. I found out I was pregnant and 2 days later had a job offer. And now I've been here for 3 months and am telling people. Plus, I won't go on maternity leave until November, another 5+ months from now.

Before you get pregnant you think you can't start a new job and get pregnant all at the same time. But afterwards, you realize it doesn't really happen all at once.

I would wait until your ready for 2 reasons: (1) once you get pregnant you don't now how your body will react. You can suffer from severe nausea, get very exhausted, etc. (2) Pregnancy becomes your number 1 priority and everything else, including your career is secondary. If your not ready to put your career on semi-hold then you should wait. I completed a second degree plus did student teaching up until 1 week before I delivered and it was incredibly hard to keep up with the workload . I compromised a lot, and if I could do it over I would focus on one thing at a time

Personally I wouldn't put it off. Knowing my luck I'd wait an entire year to try for a spring baby, and it wouldn't happen until months later. Also, I know the job stuff is tricky, I've totally been there. But, the thing is you don't even tell people until you're 12+ weeks.

I think waiting until you're ready in terms of being settled in your new job makes perfect, perfect sense. dh and I waited an extra year after we were ready emotionally to start because of my grad school trajectory (I'm about to start living abroad for the next 7 months for my dissertation research--def didn't want to bring a newborn into the mix before the end of that period!). But I don't think I could wait for a particular season. I will be trying to avoid a few months--I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding next April on the other side of the country that I don't want to miss, so we're going to try to avoid a March or April birthdate--but otherwise, it could take so long and is so ultimately not able to be controlled that I wouldn't try to time the season.

Waiting for a particular season doesn't make a lot of sense to me, since as others have pointed out, even if you start trying then, if it takes 6 months (ie, still normal) then you are in a different season anyway! BUT, it sounds like you have plenty of reasons to wait, and your concerns about getting settled in a new job after just getting out of school and everything are very valid. It's so tricky since you need to be ready for it to happen on the first try, but it could also take way longer than you ever anticipated!

Given your situation, I don't see any reason you should start trying earlier if you don't feel quite ready. You are young so no harm in waiting. Who knows-- you might wait 5 months and be raring to go. I could also see avoiding certain months. For me, once we were ready I could. not. wait. any longer. (and full disclosure-- we waited until just over 9 months before a big exam DH had, since we knew he couldn't take it with a newborn at home. LO is due less than 2 months after the test :)

If you were considering things like your job or other big life events, I would say to wait until you were all ready. But to wait just for a spring baby isn't a big enough motivator for me. There's pros and cons to every single season to have a baby. And you can't predict spring weather! In Virginia, it has been cold and rainy much longer than usual. I say go for it.

@Anagram: @CurlyGirlPA: yeah, I'm 26, so we are not in any real rush. We are ready, but don't feel like omg I have to have a baby right now. I wouldn't say my career is top priority, but it's up there. Seven years of school, and $130K in student loans for law school means I do have to make sure I'm secure in my job to pay that back :). Which is working out, as I was just made permanent and given a $12K raise!!!!! Still, I want to get settled in the new position so that's where the 3 months comes in before trying. I think we will go to NTNP starting Thanksgiving. If it happens then great, if not we will actively try starting in May/June.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I got some really good insight!!!

Most of my friends have waited to try so they could time their babies births. Most got pregnant within a couple of months. Me, it was about an 18 month process. You just never know. I'll be attempting to time the second one for the same season, though. If it works out, great! If not, such is life

CD YOGA BEE, to me you don't sound crazy. To me, it sounds as though your career is still top priority and coming to accept that this is truly how you feel would be good for you and DH. I agree with Anagram, don't start trying until you're really ready.
