@Modern Daisy: Ooh, I like your idea for following up. I may try that on Monday.

The phone interview on Friday was stressful! It was a panel on the call, but actually the interviewer was just firing questions off one after another. She was an administrator not a tech person, so there weren’t many specific questions about tech skills and she gave basically no feedback to my responses. Ugh. They said I should know if I’m in the next round of interviews by next Wednesday.

Oh man, I went through this waiting game when I moved back to my home state 4 years ago. It was brutal. Everyone wanted to interview me and interviews all seemed to go great then silence.

I totally agree it’s super unprofessional and annoying for the recruiter to go silent. The only advice I can give you there is to maybe send a Hail Mary email saying you are close to accepting another position and wanted to check in since this job is your first choice. Do it on a Monday morning before 10am soshe has all day to check in with people and respond. No recruiter wants to be responsible for losing a top candidate so this might force a response.

As for the phone interview, be yourself and answer questions honestly and with confidence. The more confident and capable you sound over the phone the more likely they are to ask you in. Also, have at least 3 good questions prepared and try to come up with one on the fly based on what you learn in the conversation. They will ask at the end if you have any more questions- ask one. Interviewers love to be asked good questions that pertain to their immediate hiring needs because it’s like “this person GETS it!”.

Good luck!!

@macintosh: Yea I would ask how much of the position is spent at the district office versus in the schools/classrooms?

Do they have a learning management system and is it integrated with other systems/data? How many teachers/schools in the district actively use it?

What type of training is put on by the district versus by vendors?

@T.H.O.U.: Oh cool! I'm assuming it's not much with data - I'm more of an education focused tech than a tech focused educator, if that makes sense. The position is Assitant Network Engineer. Good idea to see what their enviroment is like in terms of devices and what platforms they use.

@pachamama: This is so helpful! I also work with schools and educators in my current role and I've been told that my customer service skills and responsiveness really set me apart from other IT folks.

@crazydoglady: Definitely true, I even like working with the kids (and I know I can pass a background check). I'm assuming this role would have some part in supporting individual schools. I feel like I'm well versed in the needs of educators vs. administrative staff as well. Sometimes the people who are the most tech challenged end up being my biggest fan :silly:

@pachamama: THIS! I teach middle school and while a district job is likely to be different than an IT job onsite, I would stress your willingness to help and educate others (if that's true!) We have people who have been teaching for 30+ years and need more patience...heck, even I have had some really stupid oversights with tech!

@macintosh: oooooooo an IT position! I don't have any advice about the out-of-state thing, but all our it guys (I'm a HS teacher) are completely miserable and hate teachers and students. They're not "people people" to say the least. So maybe if you come off as friendly and willing to work with (occasionally clueless) educators and students you will look very appealing!

@crazydoglady: Good point! It does seem super unprofessional to not even let me know the status. Yes, everything I'm interviewing for is in my home state and I'm excited for the change.

@snowjewelz and @dc yoga bee: Thanks so much!

@psw27: Oh man, that is annoying! I don't fully understand why it takes some companies so long to make hiring decisions. Seems like too much bureaucracy. Hope you get an answer soon.

So one of my interviews is on Friday for an IT position at a school district. They called asking for an in person interview, but since I'm out of state they agreed to do a phone interview. I'd love any suggestions on how to overcome the disadvantage of being out of state and stand out as the best candidate for the job. Thanks!

Meh. I'm so sorry. It is hard to be patient - especially if you want to move out of state. My husband interviewed for a job back in May and still hasn't heard! We know it went well - they flew us both across the country to house hunt! He keeps checking in and they ask him to "be patient." Now we just feel annoyed and want closure. Hope yours works out for the best!

@crazydoglady: thanks for asking! No news though. I haven't heard back from the recruiter despite following up twice (once per week) since the interview. The job is still posted, but it doesn't look good for me.

Unfortunately I'm now in the position of having my hours cut at my current job due to the company losing a contract we've had since I started. The good thing is that I re-focused my efforts on applications and I had a phone screen yesterday and 2 more phone interviews coming up. I'm nervous but hopeful.

@crazydoglady, @ElbieKay, @lioneyes: Thanks, I was thinking the same way. I feel like it's not over til I hear back. I once was promised a call on a Tuesday and when it didn't come I was depressed, but they called the very next day to offer me the job.

@bloved: Thanks, your story helps. I'm doing a relo, but they aren't offering compensation for it at this point. If I get an offer I'll have to see if I have room to negotiate anything.

@Corduroy: Oh my gosh, a whole month is crazy! I had high expectations because this HR woman was very responsive in the interview process, but I'm sure this part of the process requires more approvals from her superiors.

@Mommy Finger: Thanks for the encouragement!

On the topic of employers being crappy about getting back to you, I have another annoying story. Before I made the trip out for this interview, I was also doing video interviews with another small company in the area. I happen to know one of the higher ups there from another job and my video interviews had gone well, so I let them know I would be in town and available to interview in person.

They went back and forth with me about confirming a day and time. When I hadn't heard back the afternoon before the day I was supposedly going to meet them, I called and ended up getting a lengthy email back about how they were still evaluating candidates and would reach out to me if they wanted to schedule another interview, blah, blah, blah. What the heck? :meh:

@macintosh: Sounds encourging. I wouldn't be concerned about not hearing yet. I had a good interview once and was told I would hear in a week. I sent a thank you email and then checked in with the hiring manager at two weeks and HR at three weeks. I got no reply from either. At one month I told myself I definitely didn't get it and had to move on. A week after that I heard I got the job. A year or so in I mentioned the long wait to my boss and said I figured they must have offered to someone else that turned it down. He said no, I had been the top pick, the position was approved and he had no idea why I was kept waiting for a month. They have done that to me twice since when I was waiting after interviewing for promotions. Some places are slooow.

My DH just had a very similar experience. Felt it went well, very promising things coming out of the interviewers mouth, etc and was told he would hear in two weeks. It wound up being almost 3 before he found out he got the job! Like others said, its most likely outside factors affecting the delay.
It sounds like this is a relo? Ours is and I know it wound up being an 8 page document of details so thinking that is where it got hung up. Lots of luck for you!

I had a very promising interview in my home state last Monday. I travelled with my family to make it a little trip out of it but it was stlll a huge hassle to get there, as you can imagine.

The interview went great. I spoke with multiple members of the team I’d be working with. Their questions were very casual, more like a conversation so i felt very confident in my performance. I also met with the CIO and the hiring manager said I did very well with her. He was selling my on the benefits by the end and asking me what start time I prefer.

I was told they had a few more interviews last week and I’d hear back early this week. So of course, Monday and Tuesday came and went with no feedback. I feel so discouraged. I’m trying to convince myself that they got busy due to the holiday and maybe I still have a chance. Should I hold out hope?
