I'm a big believer in "when they are ready". We haven't pushed anything and took a break when sister came home, but Lala still potty trained early.

We're sloooowly working on potty training now. LO (almost 2.5 yrs) does seem to hold it in certain circumstances (namely, in public, but this could be because we don't usually go out until he's gone), but at home he definitely doesn't hold it because he doesn't want to stop--he just pees. I think the latter is probably the norm for most kids. I mean, sure, it's uncomfortable to have wet pants, but hey, Mom will take care of that quickly, right? (I'm guessing this is the thought process...which is why I involve him in cleaning up.)

I don't know about the watch/timer idea. My LO pretty much refuses to sit on the toilet when its not necessary, even if we're reading/playing with the iPad/doing something fun. So I'm not sure it would work in all circumstances.

LO was potty trained early based on her ability and my perseverance. However, I read the whole article linked and found interesting points. I agree that you have to be committed wholeheartedly and willing to follow up with the frequent potty breaks. Continual monitoring. I don't regret my decision to potty train by what society considers 'early' but I will be careful to follow through to maintain good health. I had tons of UTI and surgery when I was a kid (twice) on ureter tubes but it had nothing to do with early potty training. I just had the issues from infancy. So when I decided to go to elimination communication (part-time) early on, the research was said to have prevented UTIs. LO got one anyway ...before we even got it underway and has never had one since. She has been holding a bit so I really want to help her in that area but haven't cracked the code.
LO had the watch but she liked to wear it, but the batteries died before we ever implemented it for real...wonder where it is now!

Wow I didn't realize that before three is considered early. It happened fairly naturally for us at 2.5 for DD, but I can see how there may be some kids who could develop issues if they are basically holding it and not going when they need to. Interesting!

I grew up with the school of thought: first you walk then you (quickly thereafter) use the potty. Waiting until 3 is a very new concept for me.

I don't have a LO, just wondering if you think there's something to this article.

http://www.babble.com/toddler/toddler-health-safety/dangers-potty-training-early/

Reason to wait according to the article:

Train too early and kids will hold pee and poop so they don't miss out on playing, which causes accidents, constipation, and UTIs.

According to the article, children should be sent to the potty as soon as they wake up and every two hours while awake and before bed.

Do you think a watch that went off every two hours reminding toddlers to potty would be beneficial? Would they wear it? Would they comply and take a potty break?
