LO is 5 months and is awake 2-2.5 hours at a time and she takes two naps a day averaging about an hour each. However, she goes to bed at 6:30pm and wakes up for the day around 8/8:30am so she sleeps more at night. I think it really just depends on the baby.

@futuremrsmck How many naps does your LO take? I keep reading it should be at least 2-3 but with LO's short naps sometimes it's more like 5!!!!!

Mine is 6 months and his max awake time is usually 90 minutes, 2 hours if he pushes it, and his naps are usually only about 30 minutes each (although sometimes he'll randomly give me a delicious 1 or 2 hour nap). Being awake much longer than that and he gets really really cranky and then won't nap.

@nerdbee Fpr awhile she was napping in the evening and then got into her sleep sack and went down for eight hours at ten after a feeding. I knew that was late so I moved it to 9. Last night we did 845 but it just resulted in an earlier morning wakeup. Not sure if I should just keep going with that or what... I'm going to try 845 again for tonight and try a much shorter wake time in the AM as I think she's tired before I've been putting her back down in the AM. Then maybe I'll to go 830 after that...

Ah yes, Weissbluth does say that first nap, which is about an hour after wake up is more like continuation of night sleep. When I say that LO slept 11-12 hours, I deduct time awake for night wakings.. He would sleep about from around 7pm-5am, nurse and then immediately back to bed, and wake up for the day around 7:00-7:30am. I treated the 5am wake as a night waking so I did not count him falling back asleep as a first nap.

But 14-15 hours does sound about right for total sleep for a 5 month old. However, night sleep is supposed to be more restorative than nap sleep, so if she seems tired, I would try to maximize her night sleep and usually the naps will sort themselves out once she is well rested.

Have you tried moving her bedtime a little earlier to increase night sleep?

I think it was a little over an hour at that age, but my LO has a high sleep need.

OK I'll keep wake tines at 2h. I usually go w the flow and put her down when she seems tired...maybe I need to look at the clock more....she just woke up from a 2h nap!!! But I had to give her a paci a couple times when at night she goes down without one.

My LO is five and a half months and her wake times are 90 minutes to 2 hours. Anything more she gets really crabby.

@nerdbee I think some might consider the first nap more like a continuation of the night..she sleeps about 9p-7a straight and then goes down about an hour/hour and a half later usually, sometimes two hours later for about an hour.. I would say naps are short but still her total sleep for the day is 14-15 hrs...do you think it matters how the sleep is split up? I've been wondering about that.

My LO was able to stay awake for about 2 hours at 5 months. Only 9-10 hours a night seems a little short for a 5 month old. Looking back at my logs, LO was sleeping about 11-12 hours a night.

With short naps and only 9-10 hours night sleep, it is possible that your LO may be a bit overtired. Have you tried a shorter wake time? It might lengthen her naps and being better rested, her night sleep may also lengthen.

I read on a "what to expect" email that babies around this age can stay up 2-3 hrs now. Mine can stay up maybe 2.5 and occasionally 3 but she's usually grouchy by then. Her average would still be about 2 hrs. She still takes 3+ naps (naps are not very long usually less than an hour) but sleeps about 9-10 hrs at night.

Anyway other sources say much shorter wake times, but I'm guessing it just varies by baby...so what is/was your LO's average wake time at around 5 months old?

Should I try to extend it, or leave it as is?
