At 7 months old we were on a solid two nap schedule. A third nap meant she would fight bedtime - and it would be a crappy cat nap anyway. So, if she woke up early for her afternoon nap, we would push up bedtime. When we made the 3 to 2 nap transition, there were a few days bedtime was 6-6:15pm.

DD is almost 9 months old and I'm finding that we're moving kinda to the middle. Before, def wake time was more important. If I put her to bed too early and she's had a late nap, I garunteed myself to get a MOTN wake up that lasts 1-2 hrs! FYI, her wake time before bed now is around 4 hrs. But one time she was so tired that she had to have a late cat nap, but I didn't want her to go to sleep at like 11pm so I still put her to bed by 9pm and she was totally fine and that was only like a 3 hr wake time.

we aim to stick to a consistent bedtime regardless of naps. i'll move her dinner up a bit, but bedtime is generally between 7 and 7:30p (A wakes in the morning around 6:30-7a and takes 2 naps a day)

We would sneak in a quick catnap around 4pm up until about 8 months, keeping bedtime in the 6:30-7pm range. He finally got on a solid two-nap schedule (following 2-3-4 for waketimes) around 9ish months.

@Pumuckl: DD has been a total grump lately... don't know if it's sleep related or something else lately. Sometimes I feel "you're grumpy with or without good naps so why am I putting in such effort for the same result?!"

@erinbaderin: We've been doing the short nap around 4 for a week or so now and bedtime has been a complete battle ending with finally passing out around 9/9:30 (way too late). I almost feel to just skip the late nap and start the bedtime battle early so she's at least down with enough time for me to sit down for an hour or so at the end of the night ;( I'm one frustrated mommy here! With DD1 at 7 months we had figured out this schedule stuff....

At 7 months my son still regularly took a short nap around 4 - usually only 30-45 minutes - and was fine going to bed at 7. Have you tried a quick nap and sticking with bedtime?

@autumn865: I have done both. It depends on her mood. If she's grumpy from the missed nap really early then a third nap will happen if she's okay she'll go to bed at 6/6:30pm. Luckily so far late naps have a tendency of being short so they don't interfere with bedtime.

I just move bedtime up a little - at this age, the 4 pm nap only happens if BOTH the first and second nap are crap.. ETA my son is 8.5 months and I am guessing at 7 months he probably would have fallen asleep at 4/430 if I nursed him and needed that nap

My 7 month old will often throw me a curve ball and wake up early from a nap. When this happens what is more important... Wake time until bedtime? Or preserving a consistent bedtime?

Example- she is put down for her second nap at 1. On a perfect day final nap lasts until 3:30 for a 7pm bedtime. But she then wakes too early at 1:40. Do you hold out for a 7 pm bedtime pushed a bit earlier to maybe 6:30? Or fit in another nap in the 4pm hour and spoils bedtime until often 9pm?
