When I was nursing a newborn I woke up at 4:00 in order to leave the house at 6:00-6:15 to try and get to work by 7:30. Now that he's over a year I get up at 5:00 to leave by 6:30 and get to work at 8:00. Trying to get to work by 7:30 meant there was less traffic but it was killing me . It does get better as they get older! I give him a cup of milk or water in the car and they feed them breakfast at day care, which saves me about an hour compared to nursing a baby.

Sorry the adjustment has been rough! It definitely gets easier over time. DH & I split duties - he does mornings and I do afternoons, but this is our rough setup:

- Wake - DH & I between 6-6:30am, DS between 6:30-7
- I leave at 7:15, get to work around 8 (depending on traffic)
- DH does drop-off/nanny handoff (we have a nanny share that rotates btwn our house & the other family's a few blocks away) around 8:15am, gets to work between 8:30-9am
- I leave work around 4-4:15, get home for handoff/pick-up a little before 5pm
- DH usually gets home between 6-6:15pm

The key for me is being able to work earlier hours so I can miss the truly heinous traffic and my commute isn't any longer than necessary. Having staggered schedules so we can split drop-off/pick-up duties is also key. DH is the "morning czar" and does essentially all of the baby care in the morning (while I was still nursing I did that and that only) and I'm the "evening czar" for the most part.

@Cherrybee: Both... Drive to daycare (and we don't park right outside home so there's a short walk to the car too), shuttle or bus to subway (only a mile away but depends on timing of shuttle or bus as to how long it takes) and then subway to work. It doesn't FEEL like two hours, because it's broken up, so I guess that's a plus? It's just long. Then I come home and have home stuff to do... LO to bed, dinner, etc.

@DillonLion: Sounds like my routine... I was up at 5: 10-15ish this morning, out the door at 7:00 and to work around 9:00. I've been leaving around 5:00 p.m. and getting home around 7:00 p.m. too. :/ Does it get easier? Will I adjust to the early wake ups?

It's so hard but it does get easier. I think the beginning is just painful.

I don't have as tough of a schedule as some. I wake up at 6, leave house by 7, drop baby off at 7:30, get to work around 8, work until 4, pick baby up at 4:30 and get home around 5:15 for dinner and play time. It's a long day for me, I feel like I have low energy but I do get time to relax in the evening since baby goes to bed early!

@LindsayInNY: It's hard, isn't it? How do you do your commute? Do you drive or take public transport? I drive and the hardest part for me is accepting the fact that it would take half that time if there wasn't any traffic! If I let myself think about that, I get so mad!! What has helped me is seeing my commute as my "me-time". Once I've dropped DD at nursery, I crank up my music or listen to an audio-book - it's the only chance I get to do either!!

I wake up at 4:30, have a 30-40 minute commute, and get into the office by 7:00. I also do NOT do daycare drop-off.

Hubs gets up around 6:30, gets the kids to daycare around 7:45, and gets to his office around 8:30/9:00.

I wake up sooo early but my commute is short.

I am up at 4:00am so I can guarantee a shower (OH leaves at 4:30). Between 4:15 and 6:00, I feed DD, exercise, pump/eat breakfast (I EP), and get ready. I leave at 6:30, drop off DD at daycare, and get to work by 7. I actually back track and pass my development on the way to work from daycare. I love my commute!

We go in earlier (less traffic at that time) and come home earlier, it's seemed to work out really well. The downside is that it requires us to wake up at 5:15.

@LindsayInNY: I'm so sorry. It's always hard adjusting to a different routine. We just started DS in daycare last week and DH just got a new job so we're still adjusting but our mornings are like this. DH wakes up at 6:15 to shower then wakes up me and the little guy at 6:30. I get ready while DH gives DS breakfast and changed. Then I hustle downstairs by 7am, get all our stuff together and pack up the car. Out of the house by 7:10am and DH finishes getting ready and leaves about 7:20 and gets to work by 8am. DS and I get to daycare by 7:30 and then I get into the office around 8. This is how it's suppose to be in theory at least. We're like 80% there...

I wake up at 5 AM, we all are up and ready to go by about 7 AM. It is about 10 minutes to her daycare, and then another hour to work. Same length of time on the way home.

That equates to leaving the house at 7 AM and getting home around 6:30 PM every night. It is hard!

Wake Up - either 5:30am or 6am (depending on if I want to straighten my hair! :silly: )

Out the door - 6:45 to 7:15am ... usually depending on if I am prepping a crock pot meal, LO sleeps longer or I am just generally behind.

Commute - 12-15min to Daycare, 10 mins from Daycare to work. Work arrival between 7:30 and 8am...depending on when we leave the house and how long I stay and hang out with K at daycare!

I'm supposed to be in by 7:30 but that hasn't happened ever.

I get up 6/6:15 get myself and both kids ready with dh's help. We try to leave by 7 do daycare office drop off and in the office by 8. Ideally I'd be out the door by 6:30 but waking up before 6 when the baby is still waking multiple times a night is my form of torture.

DH usually gets up around 6 and I tend to get up around 6:30. We're out the door by 8 or 8:15 usually. It takes me about 30-35 min to get LO to daycare and then arrive at work. DH heads in a different direction and it takes him about 45 min to get to work.

Days he gets called in/off days: up when lo1 gets up, usually 6:30-7. Gets boys dressed, albeit a little more leisurely, out the door by 7:30, daycare by 7:45 & and then comes home to wait for the call for work (usually 8-8:30).

Hugs mama. We aren't doing daycare but I get up really early and it's rough especially because I only get about 2 hours a day with baby. And my job is exhausting
I wake up at 615 am. Bf the baby if he is stirring otherwise leave him with dad in bed. Leave the house at 715 to get to work at 8 am. Work til 4pm and pick up baby at the train station so dad can go to work. Get home by 5 and put baby to bed at 6ish.
Not sure how handing baby off in public is gonna work out in the winter.

@LindsayInNY: aww, it gets easier I swear!!!

My routine is a little ridiculous, but it works. We have baby #2 coming any day and who knows how this will change but for now;

I wake at 6:15 ( I shower, as DH leaves early!)
LO usually up between 6:30 and 7
Bring him down, I make us both breakfast, pack lunches, some screen time so I can get myself ready (and I get my today show screen time, haha) I drop at daycare at 8:30, then it's about an hour drive into the city, more like 1hr15, but that's why I go in late, to miss traffic!

I work a bit later too, but since DH goes in early, he can leave early to make the 6pm pickup time.

DS often wakes us up :bummed: at 5:30, but our alarm is set for 6. We tag team getting LO ready and taking showers etc, and all eat breakfast together at 7ish. We are out the door by 7:30. I usually drop off at daycare and am on my way to work by 7:45. My commute is about an hour so I get to work by 8:45. It's kinda crazy that most days I am awake for 3 hours before I get to my desk!

@LindsayInNY: I take the 7:31 train in, it gets into downtown Chicago at 8:18. I then take a bus to the office, I'm in about 8:35-8:40.

@Cherrybee: Sounds similar to my commute now :/

@NorCalWayfarer: Our daycare is the tough part for me... It's 20 minutes from home but the past two days it's taken me longer from daycare to office resulting in two hours total.

Hugs!!! Going back to work sucks. I wake up an hour before I leave for work to get myself ready, prepare bottles and her daycare bag and then I have a 30 minute commute. I have to leave super early for work so I don't do the drop off, and the trade off is that my husband and daughter are both still sleeping when I leave :crying:
