We're similarly irregular at 4.5mo! Naps and bedtimes are just happening whenever he seems sleepy, varying by an hour or two from one day to the next.

I was just reading a part in Weissbluth's 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child' where he basically says anything goes, don't even try to schedule till 4mo, and even then some babies aren't biologically ready for longer naps till 5-6mo. Bottom line I'm getting from him is not to worry unless your baby regularly seems overtired. So I'm not worrying!

same with us. LO is almost 5 mo and usually up anywhere from 530-730 and her max awake time is 1.5 hrs (before we take her up to nap, but then i feed her so it takes another 10-30 min to get her down). Her good nap length (when she wakes happy) is about 2 hrs. But sometimes she wakes after 30 min. So we just have to roll with whatever happens. And bedtime is supposed to be 830 but sometimes her last nap gets awkwardly timed and she's either up too early and we have to put her to be early or she went down too late and we have to push it back a little.

We were very similar at that age. Plans got cancelled, postponed, etc. quite a lot. At 16 months she's got a great schedule going though. Up at 8, nap 1-3, bed at 7:30.

Still dealing with this (well, the nanny is :silly: ) at 7 months - he wakes up anywhere from 6 to 8 so this obviously has a huge impact on his naps and # of naps. If he wakes closer to 8, he definitely will only take 2 naps, but if he wakes at 6 he definitely needs 3. We just play it by ear.

We followed the 2-3-4 schedule from about 6-12 months. It really helped!

@BabyTsMom: Yes! I forget when he became more consistent, but now at 19 months, he pretty much always wakes up right around 6:30 a.m., goes down for a nap at noon, and bedtime is between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.

My LO hasn't gotten any more consistent and she's 10 months! I think some babies just aren't great nappers. She usually wants a nap about 2 hours after she wakes up when she's home, and another sometime in the early-mid afternoon, but no set times. At daycare, it's all over the place and a couple 20-40 minute naps per day is the norm. I'm hoping when she moves out of the infant room and all the kids nap at the same time, she might do better...she's just too worried about missing something to sleep!

@Adira: sounds pretty much exactly like us!
So your LO started waking up at a more consistent time as he got older?

At that age, our naps were based completely on when he woke up. And bedtime ranged from 6:30 to 7:30, depending on his nap, but 7:30 was a hard-stop bedtime, regardless of his wakeup!

And they do get more consistent as they get older and start dropping naps.

yeah, we went with a routine instead of a schedule because she didn't lengthen her naps until after 6 months. we did EASY and get went with the flow. she napped on the go though, so we just took her along for the ride.

Our naps were all over the place at that age...like you say, it was impossible to plan to do something at a certain time because I never knew if she would be awake or not! Things got much more predictable at 6 months when she dropped to 2 naps. Regardless of everything else, we stuck to her 7pm bedtime.

How do you put your LO on a schedule if wakeups are inconsistent? My LO gets up anywhere from 6-7:30am. So what I've been doing is just napping him based on how long he's been awake. He also takes wildly varying naps, from 30min to 2 hours (though 45min-1hr seems to be more common). So I can't really say he takes his first nap at 9, second one at 12, etc etc like I see a lot of moms say..... I'm fine with how our routine is but I'm just wondering? And it does make it hard to plan things out in advance since I never know when he's going to be napping.

LO is almost 5 months. Does wakeup time get more consistent as they get older?

How important is a consistent wakeup and nap time? FWIW, we're pretty consistent with bedtime (give or take 20minutes).
