@illumina: that is so incredibly awesome! C often wakes up after 30-45 min and it's 50/50 if I'll be able to get her back to sleep at all- and that's with bouncing and rocking. She's learning to settle herself. That's such a great habit!

@Cherrybee: She's almost 15 mths now but she's been doing this in waves from around 9 months due to sleep regressions. I would put her down in her crib and 20 mins later she'd wake up and cry/ scream. Sometimes she would sit up, look for her lovey and lay back down. Other times she'd just be crying while lying down. Her cried were loud! It sounded more like sobbing. Amd they lasted for maybe 5-10 minutes off and on She'd go through this phase for a week or 2 and then stop for a few months. Then a sleep regression would hit and she'd go back to doing this for another week or 2 and stop. Right now we're at a good place (she doesn't wake up once!). But we're approaching 15 months soon so we'll see how she handles that sleep regression!

@banana: How long did she cry for? And how old was she? What kind of crying are we talking?

I think this is great! She's transitioning between sleep cycles and is learning to self soothe!!!! YAY! My DD recently went through something similar. She would wake up every 30 minutes and cry, but would go back to sleep. She did this 3-5 times every night (between 8pm-10pm). But she always managed to soothe herself back to sleep. After about a week or 2, she would do this maybe once or twice. And now, she doesn't wake up at all. :)

Absolutely normal. And most sleep problems come from babies not being able to settle themselves back to sleep between cycles!

@Cherrybee: we had no choice really when the nursing to sleep thing stopped working a week or more ago. We tried the bouncer, the swing, rocking in our arms etc. and these only had maybe a 50% success rate at best? We then realised the best way to get her to nap was to leave her on her own, otherwise the stimulation of us being there and making a conscious effort to get her to nap actually had the opposite effect! (I say "we" but actually Dh can take all credit for it! He works from home, so sometimes in the day I go and do the food shopping or other errands, leaving him to watch S. He has much less patience than me when it comes to her, because he needs to get back to work probably, so when she needs putting down or wakes, he doesn't pick her up but just goes in and waits til she's calm then leaves.) It took a while for me to be able to do it, but the last few days I've been able to aswell.

@MamaMoose: Haha! Whilst I was cleaning the kitchen the monitor battery died, so now it's out of sight on charge!

Yup she's just going through her sleep cycles. Nothing to worry about. Sit back and watch tv or read a book mama! No need to be glued to that monitor!!

Not only is this normal, this is AWESOME!!

I say that because my baby wakes up after her first sleep cycle has run it's course - 30 minutes -and cannot go back to sleep. This has led to the curse of the 30 minute crap-naps which is the bane of my existence!! It sounds like S has cracked it!!

Can I also say that it's amazing that you have her going to sleep by herself so early on! We started this with E only a couple of weeks ago. S is going to be an awesome sleeper!!!!

@Mrs squirreld: ok so that makes me feel better/less of a bad mum for leaving her in there on her own!! Every time I see those eyes open on the monitor I'm like "uh oh..." and hold my breath, but she doesn't make a sound!

I read somewhere that a babies sleep cycle is 30-45minutes... After this time they will move into a light sleep/open their eyes/stir and then fall back asleep into the next sleep cycle. We monitor watch at night after E goes down and I think its pretty accurate. ;-)

This isn't exactly a sleep *problem*, I'm more interested in why she's doing this. We put S down in her moses basket, in her room, for naps. A week or so ago we started doing the routine where we'll watch for her sleep cue (yawning) then swaddle, put some background music on and put her down awake. Then we walked out and shut the door only going back in to rock if she started crying. At first we had to go back in several times before she fell asleep, but now we are down to going back only once if at all.

So the thing is, I watch her on the monitor almost the whole time and every 20-30mins her eyes will be wide open, she stirs, wriggles a bit and lies there for a few minutes before drifting off again. Is this broken sleep normal? I don't know if she does this at night because honestly, I get my head down as soon as she does! I'm pretty sure she doesn't do it in the ergo or pram though and am wondering whether she doesn't feel comfortable or secure being left alone.

What do you think? The total length of the nap time (with all the random wakings) is usually 2.5-3hrs.
