My daughter is 9 weeks old and we just got over her first cold. It lasted 9 days. Longest 9 days of my life. Her congestion was at its worst on day/night 3-4. We sat in the glider all night because she couldn't sleep unless she was held upright. :(

@Cherrybee: I'm sorry your baby is sick! That first cold is so sad. For us, the worst was over after 2 or 3 rough nights, but his congestion did last over a week.

DS had RSV when he was almost 4 months. The worst of it (heavy drainage which induced coughing, super thick mucous, etc) went away after a week, but the lingering effects (sneezing and lots of snot) lasted about another 1-1.5 weeks. The baby vicks chest rub did seem to help ease/soothe his coughing.

DS is now on his 2nd cold.... blah!

@Penny Lane: That is a brilliant idea! I would have never thought of that but it makes great sense!

@MoonMoon: I did the breastmilk up the nose for D's first cold (also around 5 months). It was a pain, though, so now I just use saline. My saline bottle will "drip" out saline if you tip it upside down, so I just do that.

D has had a cold last 3-4 days, but is also just now getting over a cold/cough that lingered for over 2 weeks. I took him to the doctor when this cold first started and the ped told us that the current colds going around are lasting a while - the stuffiness is a few days, but the cough lingers for a couple of weeks. That's exactly what D had. Good luck! I hope your LO feels better soon! Sick babies are the worst!

We are on day three of E's first proper cold..... I feel so sorry for her.

now, i'm not sure if this is "kosher" per se, but I used to put some vix vaporub on the side of my boob while he nursed, so the smell would at least help clear his nose enough to nurse!

ETA we've gone through a few colds, none of them lasted longer than a week. fingers crossed this is the case for you too!

@NovBaby1112: I am BFing, and I actually wondered about putting some in his nostril! I need an eye dropper or some other delivery system, though...
I hope your baby makes another speedy recovery!

@MoonMoon: i remember reading somewhere to put it on their feet- not sure why exactly, haha, but i think it helps! the vicks baby rub, not the regular kind though. LO has another cold right now and got it yesterday, so I am hoping it is another short one. Are you BFing? I am not anymore, but I was for the other 2 colds, so I am not sure if that helped speed things up! Also another little trick is to put some BM in their nostrils if they are congested. I know it sounds gross, but it helps clear things up quickly!

@NovBaby1112: that makes me feel good that this cold might work itself out in a shorter time! Why do you put the vapor rub on the feet? Is it because it's less sensitive skin?

we've had 2 colds and they have never lasted long than 3 days. stuffiness/runny nose but then in a few days it goes away. we use vicks baby rub on feet, cool mist humidifier, and ibuprofen if fever/pain.

@tlcbaby: I'm going to look for that, thanks! The most frustrating thing it's how little you can do for them, just turn on the humidifier and let them ride it out... =/

@tlcbaby: @californiadreams: oh wow, so really a week or two to look forward to! I'm glad both of your babies are better now!

I like the idea of a medicated chest rub-sounds soothing.

LO got his first cold at 9 or 10 months, can't remember now, but it definitely lasted WAY longer than i was expecting.....close to 2 weeks i would say. and it was like you said, he often seemed better during the day but it just wouldn't shake at night. my doc told me it was the first many to come this winter. yay.

We just got through our first cold at 5 months, as well. It was about 1 1/2 weeks of sneezing, coughing and stuffiness. We just had to ride it out. I used his humidifier in his room for naps and night sleep, used the bulb suction all the time and used saline drops and a medicated chest rub, too.

Good luck - I hope he feels better soon!

Yesterday, my baby of 5 months came down with his first cold. I was really shocked when the on-call nurse and Dr Google said it would likely least 10-12 days, since I'm used to adult colds lasting maybe 3 or 4. Last night was miserable-poor guy was stuffy and had a hard time breathing and nursing. He cried so hard.

Then this morning he was back to his happy self and had a nice, if drowsy day. Now that it's night, he's sniffling and getting upset again and I'm sad for him.

Will it really be like this for the next 10 nights?? Does it get better, worse? What can I expect?
