We just got lo a jumper today, my first daughter loved her exersaucer and loved it! She sat in it quite a bit and was walking at 10 months so I didn't know they hindered walking :/ We also have a walker for later on but we have no stairs or anything in our house that would make it dangerous.

@regberadaisy: No. She was able to keep her own head up perfectly but she didn't sit up on her own when we started on the saucer.

...interesting thread
@regberadaisy: "Not to mention the safety issues if you have stairs." <<AH!! *Cringes*

@cvbee: I'm not getting either one...I just feel like they are so bulky :/ I don't want it around.

Walkers are illegal here in Canada (though I am sooo tempted to smuggle one in, since we have gated off our mail floor stairs). We have an exersaucer, and Sawyer LOVES it. I talked to public health about it, and was told that is is great for developing the torso, neck and leg muscles, and that to go ahead and use it, especially since Sawyer only tolerates 2-3 minutes at a time of tummy time.

@regberadaisy: Nope. We put a rolled up receiving blanket around him to kind of help prop him up.

I think that as long as the infant doesn't spend hours every day in the saucer/jumper that he/she will be fine. I'm sure the pedis just give out that warning so it isn't being used as a "babysitter".

Our pediatrician told us absolutely no walkers due to safety issues, but she recommended using a saucer so he could build up confidence and muscles. This recommendation was at our 6 month appointment.

We still haven't gotten one yet, they are so expensive and huge. Gotta keep an eye out at the second hand stores.

We LOVED the saucer! We used our from when LO was 4 months old until she got sick of it at 7 months or so. She would spend about 20-30 minutes in it every morning and loved it! And in terms of hindering walking? LO started walking at 10 months!

Interesting. I didn't know it was bad for their hips or walking development. Now I don't feel so bad that I can't afford either! :)

Our pediatricianalso said no walkers or jumpers. She said she's seen babies with hip problems because of walkers and jumpers. I'm assuming these babies were in walkers/jumpers for long periods of time. I'm sure placing them for a few minutes here and there are totally fine.I plan on buying a jumper for my DD because we didn't have one for my son! Not sure abour saucers. I would assume they would be in the same category?

Our pediatrician told us to use the saucer sparingly as it can slow down development when it comes to walking. She said no more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Our son is almost 5 months and he will only stay in there for 5-10 minutes before he gets fussy. But its long enough for me to get a task done so I'll take it.

I remember reading on here that a walker might actually hinder walking. Not to mention the safety issues if you have stairs.

But does a saucer provide the same problem with "walking".

Should you only use either when they can sit up?
