If you're going for a walk and not in the car, they can be bundled up in the car seat I would think. Then blanket on top.

We had a November baby, so it was pretty cold when he was really little. We would tuck a thick fleece blank around him, below his face and over his arms, and then used a JJ Cole shower cap style cover - http://jjcolecollections.com/car-seat-cover

I like it because you can see choose to cover baby's head (which I only liked to do for short periods of time) or you can expose it, which DS was normally fine with. We always put a hat on him too.

Are you using a car to get to where you are going to walk around? If not, you could just loosen the carseat straps and use a bunting/coat.

I'd do a hat plus a thick blanket tucked in around baby and a light, breathable blanket over the top to shield from wind.

Another vote for the shower cap style cover. I would put the flap over the baby while we were outside and just open it every once in a while to let some fresh air in.

If we were only walking, no car, I used the bundle me that goes around behind her (the unsafe for car style, it was a hand me down), and put her in a fleece bunting that had feet and gold over mitts for her hands and a hood. On really cold days or if it was windy I also put the car seat canopy over the seat- they always have them for "free" and you pay shipping.

We live in Boston and walk or take public transportation most of the time so I definitely did bring her out when it was very cold and she always seemed fine. The car seat canopy is nice because it still has a gap on the sides to let some fresh air in but the Velcro straps held it in place in the wind. But definitely not worth more than like $12. :)

I usually babywear for walks, but we have used the stroller in cold weather once or twice. I put baby in a warm sweatshirt, with the hood on over a warm hat. I put her in fleece booties, and have tried crochet wool mittens (no thumb, just mitts), but she wasn't a fan. I get her all buckled up, then tuck a thick, crocheted wool blanket around her.

@bluestriped bee: I put a fleece bundle me over the car seat. The one that is like a shower cap. And also a fleece blanket over her from the armpits down, on top of the harness.

If it was really cold, I'd probably try not to go out much. But I'd probably put the baby in a fleece sleeper, then fleece bunting over that to go in the car seat. Then a blanket over the baby (not over the car seat - just tucked around the baby below the neck), and put a hat on him/her. And then not stay out very long!

We put a blanket over the car seat. I think in that instance though I would purchase the shower-cap style BundleMe's and pop them on when we were outside.

I know babies aren't supposed to wear coats in car seats... while in the car, but what happens if they are in car seats and just walking around town. It would be nice to have a bassinet insert and put the baby in a bunting to keep warm, but I don't have the bassinet.

Do you put a blanket over the car seat? I am a bit worried doing that because the nicu nurse told me to only use the blanket cover for short periods. She said she's seen parents bring babies in who are blue because of the CO2 buildup.

I do have a bundleme and bundleme car seat cover.

I just want to make sure my babies are warm enough when we go out in cold temperatures.
