We have one of those. We have never used it in the street/traffic but it works well in the store. I attach it to the cart and he has the option to hold it and walk or sit in the cart. In the street/parking lot he MUST hold our hand or we will hold onto him (occasionally I put my hand on his head). We let him run crazy on a side walk.

I think my 20 month old LO would do this. It would be just enough freedom that she would feel very big and proud of herself.

When my daughter doesn't want to hold my hand, I sincerely doubt she would agree to hold onto this handle. Then again, she might. Toddlers are so finicky, you just never know!

I let him go without holding hands when we're walking on the sidewalk or if he's staying close to me indoors, but he knows if we're crossing the street or parking lot or he starts wandering and refuses to hold my hand, he's getting picked up. I agree that simple (if you don't hold my hand I'm picking you up/putting you in the stroller, no exceptions) is the easiest, as long as you don't mind holding them as they cry and try to escape sometimes.

Sorry, not what you asked!

I have no experience with the handle, but our rules are that he has to stay close i.e. right next to me or holding on to the stroller on the sidewalk/indoors, and if we are crossing the street or in a parking lot he MUST hold my hand or he gets strapped into the stroller. Having a really simple cars=hand rule seems to work well for us.

ETA: I wouldn't trust a 17 month old to not let go of the handle...

I wanted it to work but for my DS it didn't - he didn't want to hold my hand, the stroller or the strap (like you showed).

My 17 month old is in a "I walk by myself and refuse to hold your hand" phase. She doesn't want to be carried anywhere, but if I let her walk and try to hold her hand she just sits down and eventually it escalates to a tantrum.

I saw this "walking handle" on Amazon, but am wondering if anyone has experience with these / if they work? I'm not looking for a leash or anything (that sounds so weird to even type!), just something that makes her feel independent but also still safe in parking lots!
