I walked on my tip toes when I was little-- I'm not sure when it started but I did it for years and had to have a little physical therapy to walk normally. I'm fine now but still tend to dance in my tip toes, haha

As long as you don't notice any other developmental delays or issues, I wouldn't worry. DH's cousin's little girl walked on her toes and was diagnosed with autism, but she had MANY other signs and I don't think she ever fully put her heels down (ie, always was a toe walker). So I wouldn't worry, she might just be experimenting.

@luckypenny: mine is 17 months old and started walking around 10ish months. She did have a phase a few months ago where she walked on her toes. I was initially worried, but apparently it's pretty common, and she grew out of it.

@luckypenny: it's probably just a phase then. My friend's little girl is doing this right now. She also happens to be obsessed with her mommy's high heels so who knows what LO is thinking.

@Cole: @mrbee: thanks! I really just started noticing it yesterday so I thought maybe she had hurt her foot somehow. Ill keep an eye on it and hope its just something she is experimenting with :)

@PointeShoesTutus: she has a ton of words and can point to her nose and eyes with accuracy when I ask. Could be balance. She also does a lot of one foot standing and standing on books (lol).

Google ideopathic toe walking... lots of info on it online! There are a few known causes of it listed online... plus it can be just something kids grow out of!

I think a lot of kids go through a phase with it and if it lasts a long time it can be an issue but normally it never gets to that point. If you are getting worried though you could try shoes like Wee Squeaks which have squeakers in the heels to encourage them not to walk on their toes. Plus they are super adorable!

I wouldn't be too worried about it if she is physically able to put her heels down (which it sounds like she is). Sometimes toe walking can be a early sign of other issues but it usually starts much earlier than your LO's age. Do you mind my asking how she is with her communication and joint attention/eye contact?
(I'm a speech therapist. A few of my kiddos' parents have voiced the same concern at one point. All but one turned out to be just fine aside from a mild speech delay).

She's likely experimenting and working on her balancing skills. Keep an eye on it and mention it to your pedi if you have any doubts. It's likely just a phase.

This is weird but my husband only walks on the balls of his feet when he is barefoot. He never realized it until my mom noticed it, actually!

Anyways, I wonder if she does this when her shoes are on too?

All of a sudden, DD only wants to walk on her tip toes! She's 17 months and has been running and walking for about 4 months. Is she just experimenting with a new feeling? Is this developmental? Should I be worried?

Anyone have experience?
