Same here with the folding. I like seeing everything, but her way doesn't often work for us. I've developed other ways that allow me to see everything.

Kid's pants are the easiest. I fold them in half lengthwise and splay them straight across the bottom of the drawer (sort of like splaying a stack of magazines across a table), so you can see all of them.

For my tees, I fold them all in half widthwise and stack them in a slightly stepped fashion on top of a shelf in my closet, so I can see them all. This also saves me SO much time folding.

I buy identical socks in multiples so that I feel no need to match and fold socks. They are all just thrown into baskets. For the kids, I buy a different color for each size so their socks are easily distinguished. Example: 18-24 months white, 2t-3t gray, 4t-5t stripes.

For me, it was a lot easier to fold most baby clothes in half and then put them upright, visible into little boxes.

I will try to take some pictures to share tomorrow.

@gotkimchi: @Foodnerd81: So ideally when you fold things they should be able to stand on their own. They shouldn't need to have the other things next to them to keep them in place. It took me a little while to find the sweet spot for all of my things, but now things generally stay upright even as the drawer empties. Though I can never make all of my socks stay vertical...

This link has a couple of trouble shooting tips for shirts.

So I've been very busy and discarding a ton (again). Happy to hear many of you gave it a shot!!!! :) Eventually you can get your kids to watch and they will help you too. DD is turning 8 soon and she folded all of her drawers. I told her not to do the underwear but she insists on doing a complete Kon Mari....I'm more of a hybrid. :) Having fun...on my desk now. The papers are the worst for me...I keep forgetting to keep remembering spark joy bc they are too dang useful. Still....it's huge for our whole family. Oh and DH and DD read her manga (comic) book...not appropriate for kids necessarily but good visuals and a lighter read than the books.

We watched the first episode of this last night and oh man, I have gotten rid of so much stuff in the last 20 hours! I could barely sit through the episode because I was itching to go through my kitchen drawers. I’m not really doing the whole system, but I am being a lot more ruthless than I had been about using and enjoying the things we have and not thinking that we haven’t used it enough to justify getting rid of, or we might need it in the future, or whatever. I took about 35 things off the top of my fridge and the cupboard over it and only put 8 back.

@Anagram: That's what I always wondered about trying to do it that way! It's great and all if the draw is full, but as you take it out, it didnt seem like it would work. Maybe there's some spring loaded drawer backing that would take up the empty space and keep it nice and neat....

@gotkimchi: A long time ago, when her first book came out, I posted a similar question on an old thread here. I folded all my kids stuff this way, but I noticed that halfway through the week, when stuff was removed from the folded space as they wore it, then the other shirts/pants/whatever would fall over or expand into the space and generally just get messy. So every week by Wednesday, the drawers would be out of place because the stacks would have fallen over. And then repeat that weekend with doing laundry and putting it back in standing up. It didn't work for us.

I do prefer to "see" all our clothes, so I hang all their clothes and only fold undies, socks, tights, pajamas, and sports wear/dance clothes. And I gave up trying to see all their pajamas and socks and just fold them the regular way, so now they stay in tidy stacks.

@gotkimchi: I’m starting with my own clothes. I also need to go through the kids stuff and pull out what doesn’t fit so I can fit their favorites in the drawer but yeah, I’m not terribly fussed about how it’s folding. My 5 yo is very picky about clothes but she will rifle through her own drawers to choose an outfit so I won’t spend a lot of time folding in there. Plus she has a grown up size dresser with 5 year old size clothes so there is plenty of room in her drawers for now.

@Foodnerd81: the thing is...I don’t actually care about seeing his pants. He’s 2 and newly potty trained and a boy so I literally grab anything on top and put him in it 🤔 maybe I should start with my 5yo. She’s picky and cares what she’s wearing

@gotkimchi: if you still want to see all the pants, would rolling them work any better? I like the idea of it not all being stacked on top of each other, so you can actually see everything, but not sold that this folding method will always work.

This was such a good reminder that I used to have my kids' clothes folded like that so they could see all their shirts but i gave up when I started having them put their own clothes away. Time to start again! It only took 2 mins to refold their drawers.

@brownepiano: yeah that’s what I was thinking- the wrinkles will certainly be less than the bottom things in the drawer, that are packed down and not seen for months. We have a big closet with not very much hanging space so I can’t hang everything.

@gotkimchi: with my kid's clothes we use small boxes to hold them. That way I can actually fit all their regular use clothes in one drawer.

@foodnerd81: that's why I hang all my clothes. I hate ironing. The only things not hanging are things I don't care about wrinkling.
I would think the wrinkles won't be much more than usual because the creases aren't tight and they aren't on top of each other pressing down.

@gotkimchi: no idea. I have the same problem with the half row falling over. And I had the same issue with one drawer being to low to fit the items standing up but I was able to fold them smaller because it was just tank tops and camisole type shirts. And I’m still convinced my clothes are going to be extra wrinkled.

@Foodnerd81: @pachamama: so i have a practical question about the folding - I did my sons pants. They only take up 1.5 rows in his drawer so the 1/2 row doesn't stay standing nicely. What then? I'm wondering if she would say use a tiny box or whatever. Also - his pants are a smidge tall for his drawer when folded - so then what? I can't fold them smaller - switch drawers??

Ok- so I’m spending my super cool Friday night going through my drawers and pulling out lots to donate and putting back the things I want to keep. Not every item brings me joy but sometimes I need to just be dressed so I’m ok with that. I’m trying to fold like she does but I really feel like I’m going to have even more wrinkles than usual. Anyone else? I do love seeing every item when I open the drawer but I’m worried about awful wrinkles. I do NOT iron, especially not t shirts, but would prefer not to look like a wrinkled mess.

@lilyofthewest: skip to episodes 2 and 3. The homes are imperfect design wise, but the joy of decluttering is still evident. I really like that about the show it’s not about making the spaces pretty, but making them work better for the families.

@looch: yes- I keep items way longer than i should. Even stupid things like not taking a shirt that’s just a little too small on my 3 year old out of her drawer, because it’s still a perfectly good shirt and once I take it out she’ll definitely never wear it, but she has plenty of just as nice shirts that fit better. Same thing with toys. It’s much easier for me when I have an actual destination in mind (nephew whose a year younger will actually use this, or local shelter has a mom having a baby girl and needs infant pajamas). Donating I to the abyss kills me.

I am practicing reduce/reuse/recycle where possible, but I was recently introduced to refuse, which is to basically stop the intake process of items. If you don't need something, don't buy it or accept it into your home. Then you don't need to worry about how it exits your home.

I have a hard time purging because I remember the cost to purchase items and the amount of time I put into refurbishing. Then, I go down the road of not being able to replicate something I got rid of, so I keep items for longer than I should.

Here’s two KM-based approaches to tackling kids toys and books that seem totally doable. Toys actually haven’t overrun the house because of all the storage options we have, but when I think about how I have accommodated for tidy toy storage LO’s stuff needs a purge too.

So I desperately want/need to declutter and organize my house BUT I literally have zero time. Like someone said, I need someone to take my kids for 2 weeks and stay home from work. Which is obviously not gonna happen.

But like, WHEN do you do this?! Just keeping up with washing dishes and doing laundry is like all I have time for.
