@Sammyfab: She actually has been refusing naps the past couple of days. Yesterday she got up at 8:30 then didn't nap until like 4 and only stayed asleep for about 40 minutes. Today she got up at 8 and didn't nap until 1:50 but came close to sleeping for 2 hours.

@sandy: She figured out how to pull herself up to stand this week so maybe once she's totally mastered that and is used to it, she'll calm down a bit.

@Ms.SK: I believe she just came out of one (or should have been). She's 38.5 weeks old now.

She's actually relatively happy for how little she's napping and she's not taking nearly as long at night now to fall asleep. We're just trying to keep her busy and it seems to get her to take a nap at least part of the time.

My lo did this for naps and/or bedtime from 11 months to 13 months on and off...she always showed tired signs but would roll around and play for her morning nap (but every once in a while she would fall alseep)...I would get her after an hour and feed her lunch and play for a little over an hour and put her back down and she would conk out. And then there were the days when ah would show tired signs but play in her crib for an hour or more. Like you, keeping her up later never solved the problem. She ended up having huge developmental leaps around this time - walking and talking up a storm. I read somewhere that they need the down time but are wound up from all the new brain activity...like when we are tired and lay down and can't fall asleep right away. Finally around 13 months she transitioned to 1 nap and the staying up in her crib went away (replaced for 1-2 weeks of separation anxiety around 15 months)...but now she is 17 months and everything is going smoothly. I think the bumps in the road are just developmental (and most of the time they do need the rest)...just hang in there...the nap/rest time transition will resolve itself soon enough

Is she taking really long naps? If so, then she may just be maxing out on sleep and wanting to stay awake at bedtime. How many weeks is she again? Is she working on any new skills?

So we tried to extend her awake time a half hour last night. She just stayed up later after we laid her down. I laid her in bed at 7:15 instead of 6:45 and instead of 8:15, she was awake until 8:45/9. So I guess tonight we're going to go back to 6:45 and see what she does.

I think it sounds like you can stretch her waketimes before her afternoon nap and bedtime if she's regularly taking a long time to fall asleep. It'll be nice for family dinners :).

@Sammyfab: That's actually what I was wondering, if it wasn't a habit. I may try to push back her dinner time today to start pushing back her bedtime.

Sleep needs are constantly changing...it sounds like she's just needing less sleep (hence the mucking). She may just be acting tired at her regular bedtime out of habit.

I meant to mention in my first post that she's been having trouble with her afternoon nap too. The past two days, it's taken her like 20-30 minutes to fall asleep for her afternoon nap, and that's after trying a few times to get her to take a nap.

The morning nap she's usually out within minutes though. She's been sleeping 6:45pm-8am so I wonder if she's trying to regulate to a 12 hour schedule. I guess we'll see how tonight goes and adjust tomorrow's schedule if she stays up again. Like I said, we were wanting to move her bedtime back to around 7:30 at around 9.5 months anyway. Maybe this will make it easier. I just feel bad leaving her in bed for an hour while she's not asleep.

C does this. She doesn't cry but just hangs out and talks to herself and does whatever, so we leave her. Some nights she goes to bed right away and some she doesn't.

my 3 month old does this--he's clearly tired, with yawning, eyes at half mast, etc. so i put him in his crib, and on the monitor i see him just hanging out, sometimes for 30 to 60 minutes (it kills me and i have to cut myself off from the monitor).

i, too, have questioned whether i should be keeping him up longer. but he looks tired and i know he's drowsy, so i don't want to keep him up and enter the cranky stage.

i would feel better about having made the "right" decision when to put him down if he feel asleep immediately, but i just don't think he's one of those babies.

i like to think that he needs some extra time to wind down after being put in the crib, like some adults do when they go to bed.

basically, i think if he's acting like he's drowsy/tired and doesn't complain/fuss when i put him down (he does fuss/cry a bit at some point, but not for long), then he's good to go.

My lo has been doing this too. She loves night night time, her eyes light up when we say it, and she'll even request it. But when we put her to bed she rolls around and plays in her crib, sometimes for over an hour. But she's happy as could be. After a little while ill go check for a poo, because sometimes that is the reason. But she's not fussing so we just let her be. She'll only fall asleep right away if she had a very busy day and she's exhausted.

LO has been acting visibly tired and cranky at the same time she always has. I've been putting her down at 6:45 just like we have every night since the time change. But she's not going to sleep. The past couple of days I lay her down and tell her goodnight. She rolls over and looks asleep for a minute on the monitor. Then she just rolls around her crib, looking around the room. She's not fussy, so we don't bother her. Last night she didn't actually go to bed until 8:15.

She wakes up around 8 everyday so it's possible that she doesn't want to go to sleep until then. But why is she making such a fuss about going to bed? DH thinks she just wants alone time. We were going to push her bedtime back soon to 7:30 or so in order for her to eat dinner with us so if she's really not tired until 8, that would help a lot. I'm at a loss though because she still rubs her eyes and acts cranky until we put her down at 6:45. Has anyone else experienced this?
