The gal at the car seat safety place told us to put them in regular warmer clothes, caps, mittens, booties. I didn't know it as a new mom, so it's just a PSA, not a judgment. We do that, on occasion. Patagonia has some nice (warm, but not too puffy) jackets, so I would look there, in addition to North Face. I bring her fleece suit and dress her in wool if we are going to be doing anything besides running from the car to a house. If we are playing outside we have a down snowsuit, and for the stroller I have a down, fleece lined sleeping bag and the weather shield (bob).</p> <p>She stays really warm in her car seat. My dilemma right now is the grocery store! I am in Michigan and it is plenty warm. The trick though is to unzip when you get to the car and then rezip around the buckles. You can tell if the jacket is safe by putting him in without a coat and getting the straps to the appropriate tightness, take him out, put on the coat and see if it still fits without moving the straps.
