This happened to DS too. Lots of poop at the hospital, then a few days with nothing. When it came out, it was quite the explosion!

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am EBF every 2-3 hours (half hour to an hour feeding each time) My milk came in 2 days ago, im pretty sure he's getting enough as he goes into milk coma quite often :) He has about 3-4 wet diapers a day. We had an appt with his pediatrician today and she said it was normal for babies to go this long without pooping. She did give him a glycerin tablet suppository and he had a blowout an hour later!! He slept like a baby all day... poor little guy. Im hoping it helps to get him on track to stay regular now. He also gained 2 ounces today at his checkup!

Ours wasn't constipated, but he had so much gas his belly was pretty distended for a while.

Tummy massage (clockwise circles, stroking downward), bicycling their legs, or gently holding them up in a froggy position helps. Try taking a rectal temperature too. And just keep nursing lots!

@beesknees: Breastfed babies may not be able to get constipated. I don't know about that specifically. However, if baby isn't getting any breastmilk then they could be pooping only sporadically and it's not true constipation. When my DD was not pooping and dramatically losing weight because she wasn't getting enough to eat, it was very confusing to read on the internet a bunch of anecdotes that it was totally fine for a newborn to not poop for days on end. Especially when our ped and LC both said it was absolutely not normal at her age. In telling the OP my story of supplementation I just wanted to share that there are other possibilities rather than waiting it out. I know my choice isn't right for everyone but in the end I chose to "feed the baby," as they say, and I couldn't provide either of my newborns enough to strictly BF. There aren't very many stories out there about people who chose to supplement with formula early on and I think discouraging people from supplementation perpetuates the idea that there is something wrong with doing so. I hope the OP's LO is getting enough to eat and the non-pooping is caused by something else. But if he isn't gaining well and his poop isn't progressing through the stages (when he does finally poop), I hope she feels comfortable feeding him in whichever manner gets him the food he needs.

To disagree with previous responses, breastfed babies can be constipated. My son was exclusively breastfed and he was constipated as an infant. He had horrible MSPI. Life got a little better after an elimination diet.

You are the mother and you should trust your instincts if you think something is wrong and go see your doctor.

I've also been told by my nurses that breast fed babies don't get constipated. One previous poster suggested trying supplementing, I would discourage that (if for the sole purpose of getting baby to poop).

It's normal for breastfed babies to go many days between poops and I've been told not to be concerned until it's been over 5 days. Also, my LC said it's impossible for an exclusively bf baby to be constipated, due to the laxative effect of the milk, and the fact that it's perfectly utilized and therefore there is less waste overall. Is there something else going on? Has your milk fully come in? Are you trying to put your baby on scheduled feedings (don't), is baby overstimulated or overtired? Tongue tied? There are unfortunately, many reasons a newborn can be fussy, but I wouldn't worry about a bf baby being constipated. Hang in there, mama

My dd had this problem on and off because she wasn't getting enough to eat. Are you breastfeeding? Has your milk come in? It's probably not popular advice but I would try supplementing with some formula and see if that helps. FWIW, I had heard it was normal for EBF babies to go days without pooping so I thought this was normal. The LC I saw in the second week said it is normal later on, but that young they should be pooping regularly. When she was pooping it had not progressed from green to yellow which was another sign that she wasn't getting enough. She also screamed all the time. We gave her gas drops which helped a little, but ultimately she was hungry and giving her enough food (by supplementing) was what turned her into our happy, satisfied baby. Again, this advice isn't for everyone. Just what worked for us. Good luck!

Yes. We tried using a rectal thermometer with vaseline per the ped and I think that worked. Then he pooped the most massive amount ever!!!!!

Have you done bicycle legs and or a tummy massage?

It sounds like it's still a normal length of time but if he's in pain that may not be good. Did he get to the yellow poop yet or still just menconium?

LO pooped during labor (late Tues night/Wed morn) and they wouldn't discharge us until she went again. They ended up giving her a suppository Fri morning so we could go home. You could try anal stimulation- put a wipe over your finger and gently kind of poke around the anus, almost like tickling...I don't know how to explain, maybe google can help but I imagine you would get scary results or porn. That's what the nurse did before the suppository; didn't work for us but maybe for you! Or a rectal thermometer works wonders.

Congrats on baby!

DS was born on a Sunday. He pooped in the hospital on the Monday a few times. But then not again until Friday! He is EBF and usually only goes 1 time per day. He wasn't in pain though. Have you tried rubbing his tummy and pumping his legs? Are you breast feeding? The midwives had me pump after he are sometimes those first few days to make sure we knew he was getting something and that wasn't the cause of the lack of poop.

Our sweet little boy was born on monday, and it has been 2 1/2 days since his last poopy diaper. I can tell he is in pain by the way he is screaming. We meet again with the pediatrician tomorrow morning but was curious what other moms have experienced with this and what helped in the end? It breaks my heart to see him like this.
