I didn't have supply issues with my big girl but my milk was late-ish coming in and we had lots of trouble with our latch due to ties, and thrush. Second time around and my milk was in earlier (days 3-4) and my little guy has a much better latch so bf'ing has been MUCH easier. I'd recommend doing lots of skin to skin and just spending lots of time holding and loving on your newborn :-)

@reverie: I started taking more milk plus pills during the last month of pregnancy. Not sure if it helped but couldn't have hurt! My OB doesn't think pumping at the end to encourage milk coming in earlier really helps. And some believe it might induce labor (my OB doesn't).

My first breastfeeding experience was wonderful. No supply or latch issues.
My second was horrible. Terrible latch issues which lead to supply issues, I was so upset by it.
My third experience was better. In the hospital I was proactive about it, rented a hospital grade pump and I religiously pumped after each feeding session. I made lactation cookies, ate oatmeal, drank the tea, you name it. I didn't have an over supply, but was able toEBF for over a year and donate over 300 oz!

It's interesting to hear how varied it can be! I'm really nervous to commit to it again because it caused a lot of strife and there was no reason for my lack of supply!

Way different. With my first: huge supply issues, reflux, fighting me at the breast, had to give it up earlier than I wanted, and shed a lot of tears over the whole experience. With my second: great supply, and I nursed her until she self-weaned at almost 16 months old. I believe the reason I had supply issues with my first was due to a posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie that went undiagnosed until she was 6 months old.

I actually had a crazy high supply with my first little guy (not as awesome as it sounds, because he didn't take a bottle, and it was a huge pain), and this time around it's far more "normal." I definitely think you've got a shot at a better bf'ing relationship this time! Good luck!

I had low supply with my first and tried a lot of tricks to increase my supply. Oatmeal, water, pumping at 1am etc etc. we ended up supplementing the whole time.

This time around with my second my supply is better. I am at least meeting her demands. Some might have to do with the fact that I was only working PT so I had more time in between to pump to meet her demands. I think my biggest issue is poor pumping output!

Good luck!

I had a major under supply with my son and gave up breast feeding at 16 weeks when pumping was yielding less than a quarter of his milk needs a day (after HOURS of pumping throughout the day).

I had mixed emotions about stopping and really saw myself breastfeeding until at least 6 months with my "real" goal being a year.

I want to try and establish breastfeeding with my second baby, but I'm really worried about going through that hell again. Did anyone have better luck with the second? Are there any tricks to establish more of a supply early on?
