M is still inconsistent. Most nights he goes down from 8 pm til 4, but he still has some nights where he wakes a few times.

Sudden for us, but brace yourself, it wasn't until just after 12 months that DS went from multiple night wakings to STTN. His sleep was utter crap from 0-12 and then all of a sudden, he started STTN on his own.

It was sudden for us, but I knew they were ready before we got the okay from their pedi.
We were told to feed our 36-weeker twins every 3 hours until 8 weeks, (though I totally stretched it to 4). Finally, at our 8 week checkup, the dr told us to let them "go" and not start bad habits. Oh my goodness that's when I truly fell in love with that man. Once we let them stretch, it went from 4 hrs to 7.5 hrs over the course of two weeks!
(FWIW I drive 1 hr each way so that my twins can still see "their" favorite doctor...we moved a year ago and I can't bring myself to break up with their pediatrician!)

@Meridian: my LO started sleeping 3-4hr stretches at 6wks when I started a sleep routine. Sleep routine was basic (bath, pjs, lullaby, feed, and white noise). Bedtime is always between 7-7:30pm. Now my LO can sleep 6-7hr stretches at a time.
I really do believe that an early bedtime (7p-7:30p) and a bedtime routine helped my LO sleep better.
Between weeks 6-10, I did cluster feeds. My LO is now 13 wks (I'm keeping my fingers crossed since the last three nights he has only been sleeping 4-5hr stretches).
Hopefully your LO will start sleeping longer stretches soon. Hang in there.

DD had to be woken for nighttime feeds in the beginning. I set an alarm for every three hours. As soon as her weight was back to birth weight we stopped with the alarm. She started doing four and then five hour stretches then, around a week old. We had 5-6 hours a couple weeks later. 8 hours at 8 weeks. 12 at 11 weeks. It was definitely gradual and fortunately never had any setbacks.
Hopefully your little guy starts sleeping longer soon!

LO 1 started STTN at 8 weeks. She was waking up 3-4 times a night before that! I thought she died on that first night she slept 9 hours.

LO 2 was a decent sleeper from 3 weeks but nothing consistent until 6ish weeks.

When did your infants sleep improve, let's say consistently 3+ hour stretches at night?

Was it a gradual improvement that took many weeks (how many)? Or was it like a switch got flipped, and it happened all of a sudden?

Eta: my little guy is 8 weeks (4.5 adjusted) and his sleep is suuuper inconsistent. If we're lucky, we'll get a 3.5 hr stretch. But usually he'll start crying around 1 hr and then we have to hold him :bummed:
