I guess she was just trying to make a joke, but yeah, I see how it sounded a bit rude. I used to go to a dentist who always lectured me on how I have to floss, gave me horrible painful cleanings, and signed me up for another appointment in half a year. I'm sure I was a pretty steady paycheck. Luckily DH goes to a different dentist and I decided to go to her instead. She lectured me a lot too, but she also helped me get over my fear of dental work enough that I got all my cavities taken care of on time, and recommended herbs and toothpaste that finally helped my gum problems. I see her a lot less often than that other dentist, but it's thanks to being a lot healthier. She's awesome

It seems like the dentist was just trying to lighten the mood with a joke so that you wouldn't feel lectured about the flossing comment, which obviously they have to tell you that to make sure you're aware of it. It didn't work for you, but personally I would have laughed.

Oh gosh, this seems like a mountain out of a molehill. Not rude at all, but if you feel uncomfortable, find another dentist. There's plenty out there who dial it in and won't make any small talk.

@MrsHansen82: just anecdotally I think dentists tend to have way worse bedside manner than doctors overall. I've gotten so many weird/awkward vibes from dentists...

In response to PP saying it's her sense of humor, I don't think doctors, dentists, etc really should be making jokes about a patients health. I think it would be okay for her to say she was concerned about your oral health and encourage you to floss more though. A doctor wouldn't make jokes about someone being obese so why is this any different?

Perhaps dentists aren't trained in bedside manner like doctors might be.

I picked other because it sounds like a quirky dental joke that they probably say to lots of people. Dental visits are my least favorite dr visits. I have gone to some shady dentists though that so once I found a good one, I have kept the same guy for 15 years!

I think I would have fake laughed. I have had other people say things that were more rude... probably without a joke. I love my dentist and hygienist. My hygienist was out of town one time and I got another hygienist and she said somethings that made me not want to come back to her. I brushed it off, though. My teeth are pretty bad and some people feel like telling you the truth. Some have to do it. Luckily, mine does it subtlety and she knows me so if she says something I trust her.

Same as @MrsHansen82, that is precisely why I hate going to the dentist. I have terrible enamel. I could be perfect with my flossing/brushing, and I would still have issues. But making me feel crappy isn't going to help that.

i would be annoyed. i feel like a big part of a dentist's job is not to shame people, because folks already don't like going to the dentist for that reason. so maybe it wasn't "rude" (although i did vote that way), but very unaware.

I may be biased because I love the dentist but... I think it was just her sense of humour! Dentists are necessary for everyone, so when they say stuff about getting you to come back, I never really take offence. If they were destroying my teeth and giving me bad advice and saying stuff like that, well... then I would find a new dentist.

However, if they're taking care of my teeth and giving me good advice that I just don't listen/adhere to, then I don't mind them making money jokes!

I just saw a dentist who asked me why I hadn't been in for long time.... I was like... do I need to answer and then was asked what I do for work... I found it irritating but maybe she thought she was being friendly, but it's like why does it matter? kind of personal.

anyhow, I don't think this dentist was rude. was probably trying to be nice. definitely straight forward! it sounds like she was just telling you like it is. the topic may be frustrating but maybe it is better to know?

@Anagram: I did something similar with moving and skipping out on dentist visits for way too long (I'd had two not-great dentists in a row before we moved and would have had to look for a new one even if we hadn't moved, so I was burnt out on trying to find a good one to start with...and moving was a convenient reason to keep putting it off). I was upfront when I went in and the dentist was actually awesome -- matter-of-fact but completely nonjudgmental. He basically treated me the way I was hoping, which was that I knew I'd been stupid but it was in the past, I was there now, and it was time to just get things fixed up without a fuss (I did have a couple cavities). I'm SO thankful to have found a dentist like that!

Anyway, I think the OP's dentist was kind of rude and I wouldn't have liked it, but if I was otherwise satisfied with their service I'd write it off this once.

@aprild: I think she meant no harm but I find it a bit rude. I've been to several different dentists as an adult (due to moving) and the first few always made me feel bad. I have a permanent retainer that always gets a bit of stuff near it no matter how hard I try. I know I need to floss it and I don't appreciate lectures. That said, my newest dentist is great and tells me I'm doing a great job and getting the hard to reach parts is part of what the professional cleaning is for. At this point I will never stay with a dentist who makes me feel bad again. There are plenty of great ones out there!
