Yep! LO started daycare at 3 1/2 months (July) and we were all sick throughout his entire first winter. It was brutal! Our second winter has been much easier.

I'm SO worried for this. J starts FT daycare in August and I just can't afford to miss nursing classes and work if he's sick... DH will probably have to - but even he has a limit on how often he can take off - and he hates taking off because it means finding a sub for his classes.

J has been sick a grand total of TWO times in his entire 26 months.

My son started daycare in January and had a rough first year of being sick with ear infections, however, I can tell you it got better the older he got. This past winter was much better for him. Hang in there, I know it's tough.

Yup! DS started daycare when he was 3 months old. He's been sick at least once a month. The first time he got sick was with RSV and recently, the flu. He's getting over a cold right now, but he's always a snotty coughing mess. It breaks my heart. I can't wait for him to be well.

@ladybee: It so scary, isn't it? My BFF's little boy has had a cold since starting daycare (6 months before E did) but he is just snotty (constantly) and has the occasional fever. It sucks but he can handle it. When E gets ill it affects her chest and we have should-I-call-an-ambulance-or-try-the-inhaler-again moments at 3am.

@Cherrybee: If it makes you feel better our pediatrician has told us he thinks it's better for them to just build their immune systems up when they're young. It does suck that they can't tell us what's wrong, but he said it's better for them to miss daycare than to miss school when they're older.

This is what our pediatrician told us. Expect him to get sick at least every two weeks the first winter in daycare, every three weeks the second winter in daycare and by the third winter he should be pretty good with the occasional cold. We are in our second winter and he has followed this almost exactly! It really sucks when one cold runs into the next but I just want his immune system to build up.

M started in late February. Within 2 weeks she had a cold and ear infection. She was well for about a week then got another cold and double ear infection. This week has been the first week since early March that she has no cough, congestion, or runny nose!

ETA: Wow, after reading these responses sounds like we've actually been pretty lucky. I try to wash mine and M's hands each day when we get home from daycare, so I wonder if that's actually helping.

LO was sick all the time in the first six months. DH and I caught pretty much everything she brought home too. Then we had no colds for three months over winter (including holiday air travel). It gets better.

At 14 months her stay at home friends seem to be getting as many or more colds.

@Cherrybee: M started in December. Had two rounds of bronchiolitis, RSV, two hospital stays, a stomach bug and breathing treatments. He was diagnosed with asthma and I pulled him out of daycare. My job was becoming very frustrated with me taking weeks off after coming back, he was barely sleeping, and I was terrified of him dieing. The asthma diagnosis and RSV were the final straw. We have family and friends watching him at home now and plan to do the same next year. I'd rather have a sick kindergarten student then a baby.

Not kidding, for the first 6 months we were at pedi at least once a month. Ear infections, viruses, bugs, chicken pox. It's gotten better for sure as he's gotten older. We make a pedi visit about once every six weeks now...at 19 months.

Yes, my LO had the same experience. He had a runny and stuffy nose from October through March! But, I feel lucky that he never had anything more serious than that.

My pediatrician did say that she's read studies that show the exposure to germs in daycare can have a positive effect on their long term health. I don't know if she said that to make me feel less sad/guilty, but it worked!

Yes. He was sick constantly from two days after we started him in daycare. Was never sick a day before that. It got so bad, with ear infections, we had to have tubes put in, and we pulled him out of daycare. We got a nanny. Starting next fall, he will go back to daycare. I hope it isn't as bad this time!

I think I'd rather she be sick when she's school age, to be honest, so I can cuddle her in front of kids TV and give her hot chocolate to cheer her up. She doesn't understand at all now and it's so heartbreaking.

Yes! I think she was sick for most of her time in daycare with ear infections, two cases of bronchiolities and a bad virus. I asked the pediatrician if I should take her out and she said that "DD either gets sick now or later (when she goes to school)". It stinks. I'm a SAHM mom now and she still picks stuff up from being around other kids though. I think it's just part of developing an immune system.
