After a year, she sort of stopped asking and we stopped mentioning it. I think she would have been supportive but it really wasn't a big deal either way.

My pedi doesn't think it's necessary, but that's partly because DD now does most of her nursing at night and it's mostly for comfort.

LO1's pediatrician at the time was also a lactation specialist so she was very supportive but he was so small that we had to see a GI doctor who told me I needed to stop and switch exclusively to cow's milk.
We moved and switched pediatricians and he is generally just kind of ambivalent about things like that. LO2 had more severe MSPI so I waited to introduce cow's milk but despite that, the ped still said it was fine if I wanted to give it up and try something else instead. He just kind of shrugged his shoulders about it - like it's in his script of what to tell parents at that particular appointment but no big deal if the parent doesn't agree.

Yes because it was what I wanted. No because I wanted to TTC and didn't have my period back. She was right, I had to wean for it to return.

This time we have moved so have new doctors and I don't think they care less whether I'm breastfeeding or not.

My ped didn't even ask. But I think it's because she was gaining and hitting milestones and we were doing fine. He's pretty hands off about personal decisions though. I'm sure he would have offered an opinion or advice had I needed or asked for it.

We're in our third location since my oldest was born so we've pediatrician shopped a few times. I've heard some weird breastfeeding thoughts, but the least supportive probably was in the first place we lived when my daughter was under a year.
I just see someone different for their next visit if I get some opinions stated as medical fact. The last place we lived and the place we live now I found peds I really like. Both basically didn't have any comment on nursing baby after a year besides its good for them. At two the most negative thing they said was basically, even if they're very attached to nursing, make sure it's still working for you and don't worry about setting limits, it's just part of the two year old to push against limits.

@Jess1483: no, my LO has always been average height and weight, and she's a good eater, I think I was saying she just doesn't like meat or something. And she certainly didn't tell me to stop, it was just less supportive than it could have been. One of those "well she doesn't NEED to breastfeed, you know" type comments. But still- not a big deal, just annoyed me enough that I remember it a year and a half later. ☺️

My ob or the ped? I only saw my ob at my 6 week check up and then not until 18 months later so nursing never came up--even though I was still nursing at the time they never asked more about it. I did mention to LO's ped at 2 year well check I was still nursing and wanting to wean and she was supportive and was like "great, if you want to keep going, if you want to stop--take a vacation and take some sudafed." So it was a good happy medium!

I wonder how much geography plays a role... We've seen a couple of pediatricians and they've all been extremely supportive of BF. My 2-year old still BFs and we've had nothing but support. If anything I think they're biased against formula, which is also not great...

@Foodnerd81: She may be talking about something like my situation, where my son would refuse food and choose only to nurse (this was ages 10 month+), which would be entirely fine, except he was already below the charts for growth and losing weight. If that's something she's seen, that might be why she gave a heads up.

We'll see, his 12 month check up is tomorrow! Our doctor is pretty chill, not a super BF advocate but definitely OK with it. At all his other check ups they always ask "what kind of formula is he on?" And at the 6 and 9 month check-ups they all seemed a bit surprised he was EBF. I didn't think it was THAT uncommon, but IDK.

They always asked, and said, oh that's great. But one doctor did make a comment when I mentioned her not really eating a lot of something, along the lines of "at some point if they are getting so much from nursing they won't want to eat xyz". It was offhand but I remember thinking, well breastmilk has a lot more nutrients than whatever food I was talking about.

Then we met a nurse practitioner in the practice that I really connected with who is a lactation counselor, runs a breastfeeding support group for the community, and obviously was super pro BFing my then 18 month old. She's been our primary since then and is awesome. We are moving and I'm super sad to leave her.

Ours current ones have been supportive and see it as normal. My daughter always wants to breastfeed in the exam room; I guess it helps her cope. So they've always just seen her feeding and asked how often, not whether, she gets breast milk.

Our previous pediatrician seemed pleasantly surprised to see I was still EBF at 6 months. I think that practice didn't see it too often.

Honestly, I would do whatever I wanted and not worry about the ped's opinion. I'm super thankful for breastfeeding when she is sick or gets hurt; soothing her is so easy that way.

My son's doctor asked if we were still BFing at his 12 and 15 month appts, and was supportive when I said yes. She said he'd probably get fewer illnesses at daycare if we continued, and so far it's been true. He was the only one not to get HFM earlier this month, and I would guess there's some correlation, as he is the only one still BF; he's also the youngest.

I nursed for 20 months and both of my pediatricians were extremely supportive. The doctor we had when I eventually stopped is a mom of young kids and was also extended breastfeeding her babies and my first ped was my lactation consultant. They both said BFing until 2 or 3 is totally normal and does have benefits for toddlers including the psychological benefit of being comforted by their mommy.
