@Espion: I opted for the skyla because it's smaller and approved for women who haven't had children - I had a csection with no labor, no dilating, no softening, etc. so I was essentially in the same boat as women who'd never had children. There was a little discomfort, about the same as an annual.

@Espion: I had Mirena inserted after my c section. It hurt WORSE than the delivery! The OB did say that my cervix was very high and they actually had to insert it under ultrasound guidance. Thank goodness she noted that because even with the ultrasound guidance, it still took almost half an hour for them to insert it and it was SOOO painful. She said there was no way they would have gotten it in otherwise. I was cramping badly for the rest of the day and taking my c-section painkillers, haha.

But, after that day, I never felt anything and my periods have pretty much disappeared, with just light spotting every other month or so. I've had it in for about a year and a half now.

Indifferent, leaning positive. I had the copper iud inserted at the beginning of this year. I've had some heavy bleeding and periods are definitely different than before, but I love that it's non hormonal and there is nothing to remember.

Bad. I had a Paragard about 4 years ago, I know this isn't a typical reaction but I found out the hard way that I'm allergic to copper. After 3 months my face swelled up and caused all kinds of problems. It took a while to clear it up after I had it removed. I'd be willing to try a non copper IUD though.

Bad. Very bad. I feel like I always chime in on these threads, even though I know what happened to me was rare. I had a Paragard inserted about 9 months ago now and was in pretty much constant pain until I went in for my check. Long story short, they couldn't find the string so I had an ultrasound and they found it lodged into some random tissue behind my uterus. Basically, they completely missed when they inserted it, but they (midwives and doctors) are completely protected when you sign the paperwork agreeing to let them insert it. I had to have (expensive) laparoscopic surgery to have it removed.

Like I said, I know this doesn't happen to most people, but I feel like people should know that it does happen. I always read the paperwork of "possible side effects" for medications, etc. and always think it can't happen to me, but now I know it can.

My experience having it inserted was terrible. But that was not because of the device itself and more because of a medical condition I have. It's all fixed now and I'm ok to book an appointment to try to have it inserted again, but I'm a little bit scared to so I'm procrastinating.

I had the mirena prior to having lo (insertion sucked!) but I loved it while I had it. Unfortunately though my body ended up rejecting it after about a year. I'm willing to try again once we're done having kids.

I had the mirena after I had baby #1. Easy insertion, continued to have regular periods with the mirena (bummer), easy removal after a year and conceived easily after it was removed. I'll probably get another one after this baby is born.

@mrs. bird: Eeeep I didn't know that was your experience with it!

@MrsTiger: I had mine surgically removed from the fat in my abdominal wall July 25th, 2013! I got pg the cycle after it was removed (had DS in May!) BUT it was not fun knowing it was lost inside me and for a while (about a month) no one could find it! I had to have a D&C that didn't get it out, and many, many doc's up my who-haa before they realized just how lost it was. I had "periods" (before we knew it was lost, so who knows) every other week the first three months, and yah....brutal experience! Despite it's lost-ness, it was still apparently doing its job, haha.

I had the Mirena for about 16 months total and had spotting or a period basically every 2 weeks. It was not a good experience for me bc of that. Also, removal was an issue bc it had migrated and couldn't be located for awhile so it was not a pleasant experience. My OB was about to give up and send me for an ultrasound but it was eventually located with some coughing and poking. Never again

i voted bad, BUT that was not because of the mirena, it was because of my uterus not being compatible with it. i've been told now that i'm lucky my uterus wasn't perforated because my uterus was too small and had a septum down the center, they shouldn't have been able to get one in there. i expelled it part way, top of the T got stuck in my cervix, had to go on antibiotics before dr would remove it the rest of the way. it sucked, but no damage done and not in any way the fault of the IUD, everyone i know that has a mirena LOVES it and i don't know of any others IRL who had complications

I have the Skyla. It's nicknamed mini Mirena since it's the same concept, just smaller and a lower hormonal dose.

Insertion was fine, I had heavy bleeding for 2 months off and on, but at 4 months post insertion, I've stopped having periods totally and I love it! Nothing to remember (or forget!) and none of the gross side effects of hormonal birth control (I had no libido on the pill, headaches, etc.)

I've had a Mirena twice, and both times have been positive. The one I had inserted before I had kids hurt like a MOFO to get put in; but the one post-LO was a breeze and didn't hurt at all. Both times I had breakthrough bleeding/spotting on and off for a couple of months in total; and then zero period/no spotting at all afterwards. The peace of mind is fantastic.

I'm considering getting the IUD after baby #2 is born, since if we did decide we wanted a third we'd have to wait at least 4 or 5 years until LO #1 is in kindergarten.
